Hi Dillon! (I hope that’s spelled right) Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to all of this new music. As a young teenager, I never grew up with rock from the 60/70s (and neither did my parents), so I have to look elsewhere for music recommendations. Just wanted to let you know that channel has been a great source for exploring different types of rock that I would have never known about :)
Thanks man! I was in the same boat at your age. I am 35 now, so I grew up in the 90s. My parents weren’t music people so it was hard to know where to look! Glad to help!
That is my favorite Stones album. It's a real shame that they never went back to that sound. It was incredible. And props for talking about Ultimate Spinach. No one talks about them.
Great stuff! Definitely agree that Anthem of the Sun is the Grateful Dead’s most psychedelic album. Your recommendation of Pink Floyd’s debut, Piper at the Gates of Dawn can’t be underscored enough. Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive are pure psychedelia. Syd Barrett was a force of nature.
And one of the special things of that album is its package. A round record with five panels in the original issue, so many are damaged because of the delicacy to handle them. I was happy to have found an early issue at a record fair for much less than its normal hefty price.
Hey man. This may sound generic, but when I was in high school and began smoking grass, I started with The Beatles Rubber Soul, Revolver, and then, of course, the rest of the Fab 4's lps. The Doors self titled lp was also on heavy rotation, as well as Jimi Hendrix studio albums. When I got to college, I discovered Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, as I delved into hallucinogenic substances. Next, the bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began with The Grateful Dead, traveled the country, missed many classes and attending many shows from 1989-1995 (I graduated in 1993 somehow). The rest is ancient history, now I'm into underground psych, prog, hard rock, and obscure private press stuff, like yourself. I learned a lot from watching the the early UA-cam videos on collecting such lps, yourself included later on. I just recently obtained Acid Archives and can't put it down. Thanks for keeping the ball rolling. Peace ✌ ☮ 🕊
That's a great list of albums. But where was Odessey and Oracle? A must-have in my opinion and one of the best psych records. Anyway, keep them coming!
Millennium is a particularly fun one for its history. Lore has it that Brian Wilson was beginning Pet Sounds and wandered down the hall to hear what this wunderkind named Curt Boettcher was creating with other members of the Wrecking Crew (the Capitol studio musicians who played on everything). Wilson was floored. It heavily influenced his approach to Pet Sounds. So it's fun to hear how the Millennium "broke up" and Boettcher went on to form Sagittarius who also made a baroque psych masterpiece called "Present Tense." TL: DR - Present Tense is a great nugget of late 60's California psych. Voila.
You guys need to check out “The Baroques” by The Baroques. It’s not on streaming, but can be found on UA-cam. It was released the same day as Sgt Pepper, but the band never got out of Wisconsin.
Thanks Dillon. I always learn so much from your video's. Being an old man, you always turn me on to different music to dig into. Thanks man. Always collecting. Peace and love......
Maybe you wouldn't count it as authentic but highly recommend the XTC side project where they produced two records in the guise of a psych band The Dukes of Stratosphear. Great band, great records

Anthem of the Sun is definitely the Dead at their most psychedelic. I remember getting it really young because I loved Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, then I get hit with all this zany tape editing. I sold it at a family yard sale soon after like a dumbass. But I love it now (and have another copy). In The Land Of Pink And Grey is a true "Canterbury Scene" classic. That fuzzed out keyboard sound is great. Very good. I really enjoyed watching this. You gave lots of great suggestions. But, come on now, no mention of Jefferson Airplane? Moody Blues? Tonto’s Expanding Headband?
Nice video thanks. 👍 Kaleidoscope eyes is a decent book I had in University days when researching psych music. Endless trip looks like it's worth tracking down. Blue Cheer not being psychedelic is an interesting take. Vincebus pretty much invented the Heavy Psych genre. I find I'm more discerning and can't/don't like everything. Some of the albums in this video I love, like Hendrix, Neil Merryweather, Plastic Cloud, Blue Cheer, Pink Floyd, July, and some not so much. Lean more to the heavier psych side. Not really introductory psych stuff, but was wondering if you listen to records like Fifty Foot Hose and Spoils of War? Not sure I've seen you mention them before. Cheers
Is there any hope in sight for those of us who are financially challenged? Also...how do you determine how much to pay for a large collection (100+ albums)?
Lots of great new bands in the vein of psych as well. Some 60s revival alternative style but some very heavy psych, world music, folk and more. Pish by the Brian Jonestown Massacre is one of the best psych songs ever and it came out less than 10 years ago. If i were to make a top 10 of my favorite psych songs, half would be BJM songs. Other new “pysch” bands to look into are the Black Angels, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Allah-lahs, Goat, Soundcarriers. All solid bands making new music that you can buy for $20-$30.

Hi Dylan,, Have you heard the 2nd Ultimate Spinach album "Behold & See" ? IMO, it's a classic, just as good as the debut. Also, I've forgotten if you've ever mentioned The Black Angels from Austin. Totally in your wheelhouse! Their first album, Passover was released in 2006. I'd recommend their first two albums both currently in print on Light in the Attic. Joe in Houston
It's worth mentioning that despite Dillon's implication that an original pressing or first release is better as a matter of fact. That is absolutely not the case. Many re-press issues are superior. It would be inaccurate to favor one over the other in general terms.
I enjoyed/learned from this. The definition of a "psych" record is actually quite elusive. For me, the greatest psych record is easily Trout Mask Replica. But that says as much about me as it does about psychedelia.
If you like your psych to be less heavy and more melodic but very cheap I'd recommend the Colours lp on Dot and The National Gallery on Philips. There's many more of this ilk but value for money they're hard to beat.
Excellent run down Dillon back in the day early y 70’s they used to call it Acid Rock never liked that name but don’t like jam band either I call it muddy country blues jazz improvisation music or head grass
Lots of current bands have incorporated psych into their music. Try these albums, Farflung A Wound in Eternity Hawkwind type space rock with psych. King Buffalo Acheron prog rock and heavy psych. Elder The Gold and Silver Sessions, prog rock with psych and krautrock.
"Aphrodites Child" was one example of Greek psych, which was in the vid. For some examples from the top of my head, check out: George Romanos "Two Small Blue Horses". Four Levels of Existence "Four Levels of Existence". Socrates Drank the Conium "Socrates Drank the Conium". Pete and Royce "Suffering of Tomorrow".
Take 444 is a very good UA-cam channel I’d recommend that people here follow if they are interested in psychedelia. British guy, he has a huge specialist collection of psych records he is currently working his way through A-Z and showing in a video series.
'65-75 the true heyday of rock as art form. Still only half way through the vid, so maybe shouldn't say this, but have you heard the first 2 Traffic albums?
Some good choices. I agree that "July" is one of the best, but to mention Space Rock & not mention "Hawkwind" is sacralidge. They are the Fathers of Space Rock. Also to say "Blue Cheer" is not really "Psych" couldn't be farther from the truth. When that album came out in 67, it melted minds. I was there. As a 68 year old, I could go on & on , but I digress.
I think it is not regarded as such in retrospect these days. They call it "proto-metal" now, but obviously no one in 1968 was saying, "Can't wait for the metal coming next!" But I hear you. Wasn't "Blue Cheer" literally a type of acid? And I love me some Hawkwind.
Hello Dylan, one thing you could add to your videos is a short snippet of every album you talk about. This would make it easier to follow IMO. Apart from that great video as always! :)
Well, a couple reasons I don’t do that, first off, you can get copywriter strikes that way because the licensing on the songs, secondly, that would take hours to edit and I don’t have that much time to invest into it. I do my best!

I enjoyed/learned from this. The definition of a "psych" record is actually quite elusive. For me, the greatest psych record is easily Trout Mask Replica. But that says as much about me as it does about psychedelia.
Second best psych record imho is the third VU record. After that, I can't say ....
I hope you mention Fallen Angels and Morgen. Quintessential psych.
You need to do a reissue of Power Plant. Got the 2008 reissue and people want 250 and up for it.
Hi! Is psych rock a phenomenon completely relegated to decades past? Do you recommend any contemporary bands in this genre?
Lots of current bands have incorporated psych into their music. Try these albums,
Farflung A Wound in Eternity Hawkwind type space rock with psych.
King Buffalo Acheron prog rock and heavy psych.
Elder The Gold and Silver Sessions, prog rock with psych and krautrock.
Hey Dillion. U were right about that endless trip book. They’re asking $999 on one site, another one wants $2134.🤡 um…that’s insane
That’s just crazy numbers. Hopefully they print them again!
My late 70’s press of velvet is very good, think I paid under 100.
Any suggestions from New Zealand Psych bands ?
New Zealand have any real psych albums - there is a really good compilation called No.7 Wire which is all NZ psych
Definitely ticket
Dillon is there any pych from Greece?
"Aphrodites Child" was one example of Greek psych, which was in the vid.
For some examples from the top of my head, check out:
George Romanos "Two Small Blue Horses".
Four Levels of Existence "Four Levels of Existence".
Socrates Drank the Conium "Socrates Drank the Conium".
Pete and Royce "Suffering of Tomorrow".
I forgot to add this band from Greece: "Purple Overdose".
Ευχαριστώ, φίλε μου
It means thank you my friend
@@lauher21 You're welcome.
I love hendrix pink floyd grateful dead beatles and many other artists
I haven't touched psych rock lol. BUT, my favorite group is The Monophonics. Psych Soul, does that count lol.
Power Plant a great record
I just got that blue cher kick s ass
The Endless trip is now over 2K on Amazon
That’s so insane.
Moody Blues?🤔
DEFINITELY! Nights In White Satin is a big one.
