@James Dorf really? Josh&Mandy, Sam&Mallory, Josh&Amy, Charlie&Zoey, C.J.&Danny, Donna&Jack Reese, Will&Kate and finally Josh&Donna? This IMHO a lot of office romance ;)
I cannot express the emotion that I feel hearing the opening theme to this show. It's bittersweet and triumphant while still having that feeling of a long journey that has gotten us to where we are. It perfectly encompasses all of the emotion good and bad in the show. Well done. If I only learn one song on piano, this is it.
This is the best OST that I have ever heard on a TV show. Period. Thomas Newman did his magic in this. Have heard so many catchy ones but this one tops everything for me.
Can you imagine being the one Newman family memeber who became like, a brain surgeon, or somthing? And they all treat you like a bit of a failure? I mean, at christmas when you tell them that you separated conjoined twins or did a heart transplant, and they're all like "Oooh! That's so great champ!" and they're over enthusiastic because they don't want you to feel bad that you're not a composer like them.
+Bookishhorsegirl I think it might've been a little too intellectual for the masses. They shoud've made it a little bit easier to follow. Although, that may say something about our education system and how unaware we are of other events. I personally loved every second of it!
I decided to go to HBO GO and watch this show again. With the press under attack it seemed timely. Great show and one of the best theme songs I can remember.
First time seeing this series I thought I saw a great series about how news should be done. Years later and a bit older, the standout is how much corruption is covered up in real life and it literally comes down to ratings and blackmail.
I don't care how self important critics thought this theme was. It's still totally awesome. It gets you all excited for the episode in a way that the new one doesn't. Really disappointed it's not back for season two.
I just discovered this, amazing show and love it! But I was hooked from the start by this stunning theme music and classy, evocative opening credits. ❤❤❤
Have been re- watching the first season-what is referenced? Clarence Thomas not disclosing financial gifts as well as his wife Virginia, House Republicans not wanting to raise the debt ceiling, certain representatives engaging in conspiracy theories (Michelle Bachman in the day; you know who today), and this was made in 2012! Either things don’t change or incredibly predictive. I’m writing this in 2023.
Beginning to like this more and more. Took a few listenings to really kick in. For some reason it reminds me in a very small way of part of John William's The Mission for NBC News.
Thomas Newman is amazing in his lyricism and the flow of his melody line. His work on The Green Mile and WALL-E was exemplary, and this is no less respectable or enjoyable!
i agree. In fact I stopped the episode I was watching just to listen to the original again because I have been thinking it was changed but I had to refresh my memory
Why would you come watch such a wonderful piece of video/audio, just to dislike it anyway? That's like buying food that you know you're allergic to, just to say you're allergic to it.
I like how they put walter kronkite in the opening. According to my dad, in those days, they did report the news and you didn't know where they leaned politically. They weren't bias. We kind of need that more than ever because identity politics is tearing this country apart.
Why in the world did they decide to remix/rearrange this for season 2? The original is soooo much better. So disappointing. So glad to have found this version.
Aaron Sorkin is so much better than the rest of television. I kinda wish he hadnt cut short Sports Night and The Newsroom. Or Studio 60. And I think the West Wing dragged on a little too long.
I've always wondered if people outside the US understand the first part of the opening with the black and white images--what that represents and who those people are. You don't need to know to enjoy the opening credits, but I just wonder.
Sorry that The Newsroom along with it's GREAT theme song never got the credit it deserved. The Newsroom was not only an extraordinary show but an important one. Jeff Daniels along with many others did Aaron Sorkin proud.
This first series' iconic throwback to the classic 50s was instrumentally symbolic to the theme of the whole enterprise. When the execs screwed with even the theme, you could tell where the rest was going. This really should have been the next West Wing. You have to wonder what MAGA thinks was "great" if it doesn't think that the like of Walter Kronkite or Edward R. Murrow were great.
Absolutely - the opening theme promises something of depth and seriousness and quality - instead, it was a glib, full of itself show, with self-referential characters and nothing serious at stake.
+Matthew Gallagher It wasn't full of itself. It was just a representation of what an actual news studio SHOULD be. So many people (namely republicans) take its over-liberal bias and its stance to always show the characters doing the right thing as being full of itself, but in reality, it's just a portrayal of how news SHOULD be done, with a little drama on top. It's how our news corporations should work, portraying the facts and educating us about the truth as best they can, not just trying to sway us to one side of the argument or the other (CNN/FOX) If you actually watch it and try to understand it, you'll realise that's what it is about, it's about seriousness and quality and it has immense depth because it's trying to show that the US has slipped into this world of false pride where they seem to think they're untouchable and immune and yet also can't seem to stop finding problems with itself that need fixing instead of realising that these so called problems are simply just people complaining about the govt doing the right thing. So much of the news is biased and as such, so is the opinions of the public that they can't differentiate between fact and fiction. It's especially relevant now, with Donald Trump on the rise. The Newsroom was trying to show the US the world behind the television screen and shine a light on what the public should EXPECT to see when they turn on the news and show that it's not what they ACTUALLY see. It's trying to change minds and educate people and make people more understanding of the world around them, teaching them to look beyond the surface, find the real story within and glean the important information instead of the crap the biased news organisations want to you understand. If that's not serious and deep and quality I don't know what is. Maybe though, you're not seeing that because you can't, you don't have the ability to. You're missing what's right in front of you. Not sure how, but you are.
+30secondstomarsMBH I'll just ignore the ridiculous last lines and state - again - why this show was not a good drama about television news or about journalism either - for that, look to "All the President's Men," or even "Spotlight," or far better written shows than the glib, self-important tone of this series. A good drama is not supposed to show us what SHOULD be - but what is. But, even if that were the case, these characters do not demonstrate that. Most human beings don't have a ready, smart quip after every line. Most television news, as shown in these opening credits, are often messy, reporting done on the fly, and have a sense of danger. The show was biased in itself, which is why it was not successful, and cancelled after three seasons because most people - myself included - didn't buy it. These characters were insufferable - worse than what you see on MSNBC or FOX in some ways - and seemed to think they were somehow above the news they were reporting. The characters, situations, and conflicts were not remotely believable. Drama is not meant to just educate - it's meant to depict the real complexities of human beings - and new stories don't fit into nice, tidy boxes. The show, worst of all had no guts. The characters were two dimensional - and some of the dialogue was recycled from other Sorkin vehicles. A good show can - and should - be made about television news - and a critique of it - the opening of this show promised that by showing us REAL journalists like Edward R. Murrow - there was not a single character on this show anywhere near like him. He was real and flawed. The characters on this phony drama were cardboard cutouts with sarcastic quips. That's not what drama is - or should be.
Matthew Gallagher It's a fictional drama. So it can show you what SHOULD be. As for the characters, it is quite obvious that they work, together as a group. They quite clearly gravitate towards the same type of people. And most people I know do have a quip and are witty. Granted it can be a tad bit over the top, but most drama is. But this was in no way phony. It's only phony because you can't see the message. Which is ESPECIALLY why you shouldn't ignore the last lines of what I wrote. And also don't comment on something I write without commenting on all of it, because I write everything with a meaning. You simply cannot see the message and you can't feel it. If you could, then you'd most definitely not be calling this phony, but affective. You don't realise how bad the US media networks are, until you see what they could actually become. It opens your eyes to news media. It shows you how a newsroom SHOULD be run; smart, intelligent quick thinking individuals wanting to educate and inform the viewers not instruct them and entertain them. People with normal lives, yet also abnormal lives who engage with each other and learn from what is around them so it helps them form the show better. Hence why they're witty (quick thinking) and smart and they have lives and meanings but they also believe in the same goals. Mac and Will are members of an old garde that see the world in a way that it could be, how it was promised to them. Jim, a bit of an asshole is often simply a realist. He has to get out and get things done, his way, because he's seen what happens if it doesn't. He's confident. Yet he's also conscious of himself as well. Hence his problems trying to get Maggie, because he knows he's good enough so he shows it, but in doing so, he hides the belief that "what if I'm not?". He can crush his work, but he feels like he has no personality. Hence why whilst he honestly doesn't mean to be, he can be a bit of an asshole. Maggie, isn't self-conscious, she's more confident than people think, but she is never given chances to show it, yet she'll persevere, she'll keep fighting and she'll get what she deserves, happiness and contentment, at work and in her private life. Don is so busy being good at his job that he's forgotten to BE a person, so he's a jerk to everyone, he bosses people around, he's pessimistic, but actually, what he is, is a kind guy that knows the best way to get the best out of people is to make them feel like they've got to fight you to show how good they can be. Yet he can't turn it off. He's become so used to being seen as the jerk that he (as is said) tries to do what a good guy would do to counteract it. Hence his problems with Maggie. Because he doesn't love her, but he thinks he must do because she seems to love him and he's happy around her, so he's the good guy, even though he should end it. Charlie is a member of an even older garde, he's sick of seeing the world waste its potential, he wants people to get out and do what his generation did: work hard and take your responsibilities as a human being seriously. Hence why he's calm but firm. I could go on but I think I've made my point. The characters are not one-dimensional, you just don't see the purpose of them, so you can't see past the flatness of the skin. Underneath it is a person, but you missed that. When you get the message, when you see how these people are the right people for what they need to do, right here, right now, then you connect with the show and you'll realise it's not so phony after all but actually very real and very relevant. Hope that helps. :)
Hey there guys. I have arranged this piece in full. If you would like the sheet music, please email me at w.nathan.mullis@gmail.com and I will be happy to send it to you.
Why, oh why did they rearrange Newman's awesome theme music for the second season of The Newsroom? The original was so much better - nice sweeping, noble melody carried by the strings...but in season two it's ruined by this weird ostinato piano rhythm, for no good reason! Sigh...
not many people like this show, but those who do know the value of its kind. raise your hand if you belong in that proud minority.
anthrogend 🙌🙌🙌
A lot of people like this show.
anthrogend a lot of people liked this show and want it to come back lol
A show that was cut way too short, and some of the most original tv I have watched in a long time
@James Dorf really? Josh&Mandy, Sam&Mallory, Josh&Amy, Charlie&Zoey, C.J.&Danny, Donna&Jack Reese, Will&Kate and finally Josh&Donna? This IMHO a lot of office romance ;)
I cannot express the emotion that I feel hearing the opening theme to this show. It's bittersweet and triumphant while still having that feeling of a long journey that has gotten us to where we are. Totally agree.
You did a pretty damn good job summing it up
We need this show more than ever.
NOW MORE THAN EVER
this and west wing
😢@@adhi_r
This is the best OST that I have ever heard on a TV show. Period. Thomas Newman did his magic in this. Have heard so many catchy ones but this one tops everything for me.
Perhaps the West Wing could compete - but of course it too is a piece of Sorkin magic.
Better than the season two theme - best opening theme since The West Wing.
I was so upset when they changed the theme...and even more bummed when they kept the new version for season 3
I'd have to say they both have great qualities
The Newman clan are a family of musical geniuses. One of the best opening themes ever.
Originally in shawshank and adapted for this show :)
Where are we today! I miss this show because I understood the goals of Democracy! Wow what's up. The music is historic !
the newsroom is one of the best tv shows ever made especially season 1....... jeff daniels even got and emmy for his acting man !!!
Why oh why did they end this show? Love this theme song and show!
As the show is based on real events, they caught up with "today"
Ben Allen Sorkin is not known for lasting long for writing, so I would guess this show is all over
+Bookishhorsegirl I think it might've been a little too intellectual for the masses. They shoud've made it a little bit easier to follow. Although, that may say something about our education system and how unaware we are of other events. I personally loved every second of it!
True. I think shows like this make us more aware of stuff going on. I still have the finale on my dvr, haven't finished it lol.
+Bookishhorsegirl Same, I have it on DVD and I don't have the heart to watch it. Totally agree with you that shows like this make us more aware.
Massively underrated TV theme tune.
I decided to go to HBO GO and watch this show again. With the press under attack it seemed timely. Great show and one of the best theme songs I can remember.
One of my favorite shows of all time.
My favorite show of all time
First time seeing this series I thought I saw a great series about how news should be done. Years later and a bit older, the standout is how much corruption is covered up in real life and it literally comes down to ratings and blackmail.
You go, Aaron Sorkin!
Why am I emotional when I listen to this 😭
It encapsulates real human integrity.
Man I remember these days back in the early teens of the 2000’s my brother would watch this show it was such a good time. What a time to be alive
I don't care how self important critics thought this theme was. It's still totally awesome. It gets you all excited for the episode in a way that the new one doesn't. Really disappointed it's not back for season two.
Beautiful. Still grieving that show 😢
You're so right. HBO's themes are pretty memorable and sometimes sublime, evocative....etc.
I agree! That sequence down memory lane really draws you in.
I just discovered this, amazing show and love it! But I was hooked from the start by this stunning theme music and classy, evocative opening credits. ❤❤❤

This is a perfect example of good old American Spirit. Highly motivational and uplifting! My favorite opening music!
I'm from the UK and I get it!
Beginning to like this more and more. Took a few listenings to really kick in. For some reason it reminds me in a very small way of part of John William's The Mission for NBC News.
Greg Todd That movie really teared me up 😢. This makes you think about how important the news is to our world, more than ever
It's plainly a John Williams pastiche. A good one.
Yes this theme is quite similar to the initial strings portion of 'The Mission' by John Williams
I have to believe it's a total tribute to The Mission.
It's 2021 and this is still as relevant as ever!
I was skeptical about this music at first, but come the second episode, I liked it.
Good stuff!
True perfection. Ill never know the reason they changed it after the first szn
One of the best shows ever!!!
Thomas Newman is amazing in his lyricism and the flow of his melody line. His work on The Green Mile and WALL-E was exemplary, and this is no less respectable or enjoyable!
Great theme tune
HBO and Thomas Newman messed around and made one of the greatest opening themes of all time.
i agree. In fact I stopped the episode I was watching just to listen to the original again because I have been thinking it was changed but I had to refresh my memory
i like the way its set up with the history of news basically before the intro of the characters
Thomas Newman does it again.
Gorgeous as usual.
the track has an eerily calming quality to it.
Thank you
Such hope...
I like this Opening!
best tv opening EVER.
You should write the author's name at least in description: is Thomas Newman.
Th
I miss this show. 💔
will be missed :(
Why would you come watch such a wonderful piece of video/audio, just to dislike it anyway? That's like buying food that you know you're allergic to, just to say you're allergic to it.
Aaron Sorkin rules!
It gives a strange cool vibe of patriotism and righteousness whenever it plays
HBO makes good opening TV theme song. #TheNewsroom #GameOfThrones
@Abegail Bautista Westworld too
band of brothers
True Detective
I like how they put walter kronkite in the opening. According to my dad, in those days, they did report the news and you didn't know where they leaned politically. They weren't bias. We kind of need that more than ever because identity politics is tearing this country apart.
I look forward to that two seconds of Chet Huntley every time.
I weep that I don't get to hear this until next Summer.
The best serious show ever...
Why in the world did they decide to remix/rearrange this for season 2? The original is soooo much better. So disappointing. So glad to have found this version.
So much better than the shitty new theme they gave it to make it seems more 'hip'.
Aaron Sorkin is so much better than the rest of television. I kinda wish he hadnt cut short Sports Night and The Newsroom. Or Studio 60.
And I think the West Wing dragged on a little too long.
It really captures that "West Wing" vibe and makes it feel right at home among the Sorkin catalog
This is the same music used in the shawshank redemption. Very special link. Thomas Newman.
Dude wheb Fonda yells WELL GET THEM BACK.
Hair stood up then. Hair stood up now typing it.
This theme song makes me proud to be American, and I'm not even from America.
I've always wondered if people outside the US understand the first part of the opening with the black and white images--what that represents and who those people are. You don't need to know to enjoy the opening credits, but I just wonder.
@@PerthTowne can you explain tham, TIA.
@@PerthTowne I guess they must be old news caster.
Where is todays Edward R Murrow when we need him? The news today is just "Dirty Laundry"
What would Edward R Murrow make of the state of the mainstream media today ....... He'd not be impressed......
Sorry that The Newsroom along with it's GREAT theme song never got the credit it deserved.
The Newsroom was not only an extraordinary show but an important one. Jeff Daniels along with many others did Aaron Sorkin proud.
I agree. If it ain't broke...
I cannot think of a BETTER show that should still be on the air than this one. 3 seasons was far too short of a run, practically a tease.
What a terrible way to end the series. Will always love the first season though.
I think this supposed to be Aaron Sorkin's triumphant return to television, only for the writer to realize that he didn't like writing for TV anymore.
Better than the show itself.
Absolutely - the opening theme promises something of depth and seriousness and quality - instead, it was a glib, full of itself show, with self-referential characters and nothing serious at stake.

Hey there guys. I have arranged this piece in full. If you would like the sheet music, please email me at w.nathan.mullis@gmail.com and I will be happy to send it to you.
So superior to the 2nd season 'updated' version.
Bad move.
Why, oh why did they rearrange Newman's awesome theme music for the second season of The Newsroom? The original was so much better - nice sweeping, noble melody carried by the strings...but in season two it's ruined by this weird ostinato piano rhythm, for no good reason! Sigh...
I know this was posted a long time ago, but I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!! The original was a thousand times better!!!
I always felt this show isn't as good as it thinks it is.
+Carl Blando I think it's brilliant. Hmm, each to their own I guess.
I honestly think the opposite I don't think the show ever acted like what it is I feel the show downgraded itself
I loved the West Wing, but I think I prefer The Newsroom. I don't think this show ever got its due, or lasted long enough.
Like everything Sorkin does??
Love the show, but I literally had to track this theme down on UA-cam to comment how annoyingly long it is. Maybe it's my Gen Z brain, but good God!
Definitely your Gen Z brain, good grief...........
As Gen Z, I 100% disagree with you haha. I really love this theme, I don't think it would be the same if shortened just for the sake of shortening.
xddd defc fr
They still play it during the credits at least.
