Very well done thank you HBO for respecting the source material and giving non gamers an opportunity to experience the story of this game!
Been thinking of this ever since I heard they want to adapt Horizon Zero Dawn as a TV show too. Video games have come such a long way as a storytelling medium. Just gotten started on GoW Ragnarok and I can already tell it’s gonna be as much a cinematic journey as an interactive one. If they do adapt Horizon, I hope it comes out more like The Last Of Us has so far than the abortion that was the Halo TV series.

Fungi grows on them, representing how it will spread all over the world. 0:53-0:55 The two fungi in the center looks like Joel and Ellie.

Gustavo Santaolalla's score is one of the most beautiful and fitting pieces of soundtrack I've heard, it's really the only piece they could've used for the show too. I think nobody realized this but pause at 0:26 and take a look at the fungus for a good few hot seconds, the fungus that grew looks like that it made the map of the US.
Here’s my thoughts. 0:01 is obviously the Cordyceps fungus emerging as its immediate threat, but nobody notices that it’s already too late and the spread is much worse than intended. The blank backround with the fungus slithering shows it’s stealth. 0:04 Here, we see more of them. This could mean how fast the fungus actually spread(that remained undetected within human hosts until Outbreak Day.) into cities via food shipments(Since they’re moving in somewhat coordinated lines rather than how bugs run for cover if you lift a rock; scattered.) 0:12 Here is pretty easy. You can see the fungus growing into multiple “stumps” indicating that it has infiltrated cities with possible early Runners taking form. In a nutshell, it has reached cities by now. The damage has been done, but it’s only the beginning. 0:18 In this scene, it’s pretty clear that this symbolizes the spread beyond cities and into the surrounding areas(i.e villages and other rural areas via wandering Runners or food products infected with the Cordyceps arrive there.) before making it out of the US. The bulging part of the fungi, I am uncertain as to what it could mean, sadly. 0:26 For those of you who perhaps didn’t catch it, this is signifying that the fungus has spread *entirely* over the U.S. extraordinarily quickly, with every state having some sort of the Cordyceps outbreak occurring. 2 seconds later into this scene, you can see that the fungal strands are reaching out into another blank part of the screen, meaning that it’s spreading *out* of the United States, or what was formerly known as the USA. 0:36 Here it might be tricky for people to spot, but this little structure(I’m not sure if it’s dirt, debris, or hardened Cordyceps.) in my eyes is a human head. They’re mouth is open, while fungi is growing out of the very top of the skull, meaning that this is a picture of how distressed or aggressive the Infected are. 0:55 It’s obvious. The fungus is now everywhere. There is no escape. Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, and everything you interact with has seen, been involved with, or *is* Cordyceps. The fungi in the background could be 2 things. A, trees or wildlife, maybe even grass(Since there are no functioning cities left, other than QZ’s.) Or B, the fungus all around them. In the middle, it’s pretty clear what the Fungus is forming. Joel and Ellie. What I found interesting and a cool detail is that Tess isn’t seen here, but only the two. This is just my personal breakdown of the intro. 😁
Episode three just released and it was absolutely beautiful. First time I cried for characters I was just introduced to. Wonderful job so far and the intro is no exception.
I just seen the first episode and so far I am really liking this adaptation. You can tell this was made with heart and respect for the source material.
Same music from the game, shows a deep respect for the material imo. Lotta adaptations will try to hide their video game inspirations, this one fully embraces it

This intro reminds me of Game of Thrones. What a time to be alive. I got to experience The Last of Us for the first time in 2013, never would I have imagined I'd be watching a live action show based on that masterpiece.
What Craig Mazin said at the end of the video about Ellie enjoying the violence literally made me consider Ellie's entire character arc in part 2 so insanely deeper than I already did. Absolutely immaculate storytelling
Ellie is like the opposite of Atreus in terms of mentor. Atreus learned that violence is a last resort from his father while Ellie is borderline like Magni and Modi cause of her environment.

@@thewiseowl8804 thank you wise owl
As a relatively new fan that just saw Ellie and Riley’s episode out of curiosity, it was an experience I would never get otherwise, because I don’t really tend to gravitate to hardcore story driven video games (I’m bad at them 😅). But this story is amazing. I can sort of tell why people have been heralding the video game, and by extension the adaptation, into higher regard.
This is singlehandedly the best adaptation of a video game I have ever seen.
I love that the original theme is in the opening it brings memories when the game first came out 😢😢
I remember when they showed the game on Toonami
Can't believe it's been almost 2 months since this show dropped time goes by fast
Fantastic Intro and the fact Gustavo came back to score is awesome. Love the show and Pedro And Bella are killing it. Can't wait for the rest.

I was so happy that they kept the game theme. I honestly couldn't imagine last of us without it.
Love how this intro works on a microscopic and macroscopic level: you can recognize the shape of the USA at 0:25 and how the fungus rapidly conquers the continent. Such a versatile and well-crafted intro. Fantastic work.
This just won best adaptation at the game awards. Well deserved.
0:12 the fungus are like a destroyed city
The music gives me chills. Gustavo Santaolalla is an amazing composer
At 0:28 when it zooms in on the cordyceps growing, it grows at Atlanta relating to how to QZ went down.
One of the best video game adaptations it has everything nailed down!
I think you mean "the best."
Words cannot describe the joy i felt hearing this masterpiece as the opening theme. I can only see the show getting better from here :)
Feb 2024....and I'm still listening to this into.
Never seen a live action videogame adaptation that has done scenes 1:1 to the game and included the actual game OST. Wonderful subtle changes and additions to the story as well.
0:09-0:14 The fungi grows in a shape of a city or buildings, signifying the society it will destroy.
0:21-0:28 The fungi spreads in the shape of U.S.A, signifying how fast it spreads and destroys a country like U.S.A.
0:32-0:36 The fungi grows on a dead primate's skull, signifying how it will take over humans and everything.
0:46-0:50 Notice how the surface looks like the Earth, with the water and a few solid stuff representing the continents. Fungi grows on them, representing how it will spread all over the world.
0:53-0:55 The two fungi in the center looks like Joel and Ellie.
This show was absolutely fantastic, and I haven’t been invested in a TV series like I was for TLOU in a while. It was a great experience, these last nine weeks.
Was watching the series with my mom(we watch everything together) and my dad, who’s usually never into anything I’m into, heard this intro and decided to sit down and watch the episode with us. Made me realize how impactful a simple opening sequence is
I've never played the video game.I only watched the series. But ,This sound track still takes me to an another world.I can't imagine how it feels like to the legends who played the video game
At least watch the gameplay story! The show does it Justice, but the original story will be a major highlight. Playing the game was definitely worth getting a PlayStation.
HBO always has the best intro! The Sopranos, Game Of Thrones, Succession and now The last of us!
White lotus* they sure know what there doing 😆
@@thehoopman88 White Lotus has definitely one of my favorite openings, especially season 2
And Peacemaker too.
True Blood
And euphoria
Gustavo Santaolalla's score is one of the most beautiful and fitting pieces of soundtrack I've heard, it's really the only piece they could've used for the show too. I also like how the visuals of this intro look like paper cutouts to resemble a child's drawing, which ties into the story's themes of lost innocence.
As soon as I heard the original theme song play I went "Awww yeah"
Never realised how well it fits a TV show intro of this style.
Man I'll miss this show.
@💗devin💗 when it will be out ??
@@megasbasileios3154 two years later
I love that you kept the theme song. Every time I hear it at the start of the episode, I'm so happy.
hearing that iconic music again was everything
Who else got chills when this came up??
I’m so glad that the original music is in this show. It’s amazing to find each song used in the games. Love you HBO for making this fantastic show
Craig Mazin, the man behind Chernobyl and a writer of The Last of Us...
And Scary Movie 3, 4 and the director and writer of Superhero Movie
Now that is a versatile filmography
The fact that they used the same theme from the game is a hint that the writers and the director perfectly understand fan service 😮
One of the writers is the writer of the game , and each episode has different directors
great evolution of the intro from the game, hats off to the team who did this one!
I miss waiting all week for Sunday night to watch last of us
I get goosebumps every time it goes to 0:05
This TV series is incrdible, outstanding! I am proud for Pedro, he's the pride of Chile, an idol for us. Bella was incredibly funny and badass.
"It's okay, baby girl. I got you."
Ill never skip the intro to this, Its just to good
As soon as I heard the music i got tears in my eyes this first episode was everything I could have ever wanted and more
This show has been excellent so far, it hits all the right notes and carries the same feel
Fact : You never skipped this intro
You caught me
The in-game music is so superb and perfection that im glad they went with the same music for the credits and some key scenes within the show 🤩🤩🤩 absolutely love love loveee
From GOT to TLOU , HBO never failed at opening scene 👍 , Bravo
HBO never disappoints
Ok

Killer Intro 🖤
I like how the intro showcases the demise of civilization with the spread of Cordyceps throughout the U.S and among the human race.
This could mean how fast the fungus actually spread(that remained undetected within human hosts until Outbreak Day.) into cities via food shipments(Since they’re moving in somewhat coordinated lines rather than how bugs run for cover if you lift a rock; scattered.)
0:12 Here is pretty easy.
They kept the same theme...is the blessing we all fans needed !! THANK YOU 🙏
It is a masterpiece. Complete. Comprehensive.
He's out of line, but he's right.
My dad got lots of chills when he saw this for the first time ever
I am actually so glad that they kept the game's main theme here without any alterations.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, def gonna be one of the best tv shows released this year
I got goosebumps when I heard this at the series 😮
Same music from the game, shows a deep respect for the material imo. Lotta adaptations will try to hide their video game inspirations, this one fully embraces it
Great choice of having mazin that knows how to create great subtle and dark atmospheric tone like he did and chernobyl and also having the creator of the story with the crew i think is the reason we have such a great adaptation... imagine putting joss whedon or someone like sam raimi making tlou into a movie? I'm so glad that didnt happen
This show is literally the best one I’ve seen in years
the opening is THE perfect opening since the theme is something to get excited and not skipable
The intro music is living in my head like cordyceps.
When i heard the intro i screamed with emotion 😍❤️ i loved the first episode of the series so much intros like this should never be skipped ❤️
I miss watching this every week
Can't believe this show came out almost a year ago now lol, absolutely loved watching it when it was releasing
0:27 if u look closely it kinda resembles the usa map
This theme is nostalgic for me since I first played this game when it came out on PS Plus. Love this game and this show! 😁
This intro reminds me of Game of Thrones. What a time to be alive. I got to experience The Last of Us for the first time in 2013, never would I have imagined I'd be watching a live action show based on that masterpiece.
Sooooo excited for season 2
0:54 is just perfection as the fungi symbolizes Ellie and Joel
What Craig Mazin said at the end of the video about Ellie enjoying the violence literally made me consider Ellie's entire character arc in part 2 so insanely deeper than I already did. Absolutely immaculate storytelling
Ellie is like the opposite of Atreus in terms of mentor. Atreus learned that violence is a last resort from his father while Ellie is borderline like Magni and Modi cause of her environment.
