    Once I learned "Set to frame size," I never went back to "Scale…" You just never know when you may want to zoom an image in a little closer, even if only to better center a person that's supposed to be in the middle. Choosing "Set" allows you to do this without losing that little bit of quality, which is always nice.

    Thanks Colin! This used to confuse me but now I embrace it. I am working on my second documentary; working in a 1080 world but shooting 4K. It is great to bring in the media at "set to frame size" so that if I shot a medium shot I can if I need to, bring it up from 50% to 100% - get a close up and not lose any resolution!

    So if I shot at 4K, knowing I wanted just a portion of that frame to keep higher resolution for an eventual 1080p export, (a close up section of the original 4K frame, scaled up to fill the frame of 1080p), then "Set to frame" is the way to go? I hope I am explaining this properly if the whole point is hoping to have a close up section fill the screen but retain more detail then if I had just scaled up an original 1080p shoot? And the key would also be to start off making sure the sequence is 1080p even if I drag 4K clips into it? Just want to be sure my brain is understanding. thank you.

    If you really want to notice the difference, put a "scaled" 4K video into a 1080 sequence, and then, copy and paste the scaled a video from the timeline into a 4K sequence. The scaled video will be smaller than the 4K dimensions, and if you increase the scale of that video back to the original 4K dimensions, the pixelation will be prominently noticeable - the equivalent of scaling a 540p video to fill in a 1080p sequence.

    Sir, Can yo help me? I am trying to import a video in to pro from my trial cams. The format is MP4, ratio is 1080x1920, I have no other problems playing htese videos on my phone or on any other platform on my computer. When I import them into adobe, they show up as a large green screen with the video in a very small impossible to see square in the upper left hand corner of that selected section. It only does this to the videos from my trail cams. I'm at a complete loss of what to do. If you can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it, there seems to be no logical reason why this is happening.

    hi, may i ask? Do you mean that as a default "scale to frame size" will be better than " set to frame size" since bigger size footage will be automatically scale down as shown in your video from 100% to 50%?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  2 роки тому +1

      They both resize your media. Scale to frame size is best used if you won't resize your media again after the initial resize. I never use that setting and do just fine.

    15:20 That's not necessarily true. I've been wrestling with a fill frame effect with pictures since I started working on premiere about half a year ago despite using scale and set to frame size. I came to this video precisely to see how I can hopefully fix this issue I've been having. I never knew about the media setting so I'll check that one out today

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  2 роки тому +1

      There is no fill frame anywhere in Premiere Pro.

    • @LoungeFly02
      @LoungeFly02 2 роки тому

      @@VideoRevealed That's true, there's no fill frame feature or effect, but prior to this video (huge THANK YOU to helping me finally conquer this headache of mine!) I wrestled with certain images being scaled to fit the width of the screen (but not the height) and became severely distorted. I wish I could link to external sites, because I have an example...not that it's completely necessary anymore because again, this video FINALLY solved that issue for me. So again, a huge thank you!

    Wow... I've played around with these settings for quite some time now. Never knew the essential differences. But those details are so, so important!
    So if set to frame size is usually the best option between the two, when is scale to frame size more preferable than set? Also, is it best to set the default media scaling at none?
    Thanks for this Colin. You're one of the few that can very well unveil the enigma that is Adobe haha.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  2 роки тому +1

      I leave it up to you to decide but for me, I leave it off and scale manually in the Effects Control Panel. But, I don't deal with a lot of images so maybe a documentary editor might choose Scale to Frame Size.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  2 роки тому +1

      There's no need to test. The display is the same as the output.

    • @AndyGilleand
      @AndyGilleand 2 роки тому

      @@VideoRevealed Well that's not always the case. Like for example, there's the "maximum render quality" setting which changes the scaling algorithms, there's the high quality playback checkmark that changes how the preview window looks, there are proxies, and I expect there are probably other optimizations that make preview quick that are turned off during encode for a more accurate export. I may have to test this on export because I'm curious if the scale to frame size is only an optimization for performance reasons during live playback, similar to a proxy, or setting the preview monitor to a lower resolution, rather than something that necessarily affects export.

    • @zion653
      @zion653 2 роки тому

      @@AndyGilleand I think you are comparing a one-to-one where an image that is scaled to 1080p looks the same as an image that is set to 1080p. The difference, however, is in the flexibility when editing these files. For instance, when I am editing music videos, I will use the "Set" option when dropping 4K video into my 1080p project. This allows me to zoom in on different areas of the video without losing any quality, as I could just increase the scale to, say, 80% of the original video size.
      If I imported the 4K video using the "Scale" option; however, I would not be able to zoom in the video without losing quality, particularly if I want to increase a certain area by, say, 50% or more - everything starts to get blurry using the scale option.
      When I encode the projects, there is a noticeable difference in clarity between a segment that was zoomed in from a "scaled" video as opposed to a "set" video.

    Thank you for this....I am new to creating YT content and I messed up my first video with a simple misspelling of a name and had to go back to the original Photoshop background image and correct it but when I brought the corrected background image into Premiere everything was completely messed up. So I am starting from scratch sort of.....You mentioned setting PhotoShop files to proper size but you didn't say what those sizes should be. Could you please elaborate? I also have another question about importing PhotoShop files without flattening the layers. I know PhotoShop files can be imported into Premiere without flattening the layers but can that file be used with the layers intact in the timeline in Premiere? I ask this because if that can be done then if I ever have to make a correction to something in a PhotoShop file in the future it would be handy to have those layers left intact so I can just right from Premiere use the feature that lets you "edit in PhotoShop". If you use that feature and make and save the changes to the PS file, close out of the file in PS and return to Premiere will the changes show up on the file in PP? I am hoping the answer is yes because that would be really useful.
