Allen Toussaint telling (presumably) Snooky Young and Joe Farrell to stop bitching and play the charts is hilarious. The "Rock of Ages" horn players were extremely accomplished players, as improvisers and as section players. Snooky was 1st trumpet for Jimmie Lunceford(!) and Count Basie, among others. Howard Johnson was one of Gil Evans' secret weapons from the 60s onward, sometimes featuring Howard's tuba in unusual, but really cool, contexts. These guys were awesome musicians, so I wonder *what* issue(s) they had with Toussain't charts, because I doubt it was unfounded. Snooky knew more than most people on this planet will ever know about horn arrangements, so it'd be fun to have heard that conversation.
Is that Allen T on the bandstand at ua-cam.com/video/NwUa40wjETQ/v-deo.html for King Harvest..? Looks like he's coaching the trombone player.. Robbie does say he was '..in NYC.'
I Always had a problem in naming my favorite artist until i found Allen’s music... complete musical genius
