I was at this show! Had never heard of The Band yet my twin brother convinced me to attend 12/31/71. The moment they started (After Commander Cody & Airmen finished the opening set) - my jaw hit the floor....never heard music performed with such passion & Joy! Bob Dylan as an encore? Rock of Ages released 6 months later? I’ve been a devoted fan ever since New Years Eve 1971!!
Tom Collins - you are correct & I was mistaken...I saw Traffic 2 weeks later on 1/14/72 & Commander Cody opened for THEM - not The Band. I remember that Robbie told the audience that The Band wanted to be on stage at midnight yet do not remember the film you referenced.
There’s video of Robbie and possibly another one of Robbie or Levon sitting by a mixing board, playing a song, and explaining how Garth created his part of a song. Could you please upload that? I saw it on UA-cam years ago, but can’t find it anymore. The whole 4 hour show video used to be here, too, and I can’t find that, either. All of that video is important, and should be available for our younger generations to enjoy, and see what excellent musicians used to sound/ look like.
I was not there. I was born in 1982. Lucky enough to have parents that introduced me to this. I've had the privilege to perform many live music shows. The Band is a standard of what the art form can achieve.
I was thinking the same thing. It would be awesome if they put out a box set of this show next year as they have with other 50th anniversaries, but I’d say that’s unlikely since the Academy of Music box set already came out.
I went there with a new girl friend. A friend of mine said I could pick up my tickets at Will Call but they weren't there. In those days I used to be able to sneak into any concert though so I figured I'd show my gf how to do it. I got in but she's left standing outside waving her arms at me and I'm like, do I stay and let her go or do I give up and leave. I chose the latter and we had a great time hanging out at another friend's place at NYU but sometimes I wonder...
I love The Band, best ever!

Doug Drosin I was there...no opening act...do you remember the movie they showed to kill time so they’d be onstage at midnight?

Tom Lennox - not Tom Collins. Apologies.

Exactly. Looks like they have digitized and restored a lot of it from these videos… fingers crossed it sees a release some time.

Still riding that train
Isn't this just the Rock of Ages double album? That album sounds great, why mess with it?
Cuz this is even better. It sounds ridiculous.
