a good fixture will have a zero point datum for WCS definition, a great fixture will utilize zero point system to align with standard WCS and run a program cold.
A good repeatable fixturing is key to manufacturing multiple parts efficient. Toolmakers that makes good fixtures are worth their weight in gold for a company.

To protect your toolplate you could use friskfilm also used by airbrush
