According to a lot of people, Yamashita plays this all wrong. This is not how Bach should be played they say, this is not how the guitar should be played... They might be right, but when I listen to this it always moves me. Yamashita always moves me! I think he's fantastic. But I also love the way Glenn Gould and Segovia play Bach, so maybe I don't care for the things the critics care for. I think Yamashita, Gould and Segovia are fantastic artists, because when they play they touch my soul more than other musicians do.. And I love that. They might not play their music in a historically correct fashion, or in good taste or whatever, but there's fire in their performance! They play with passion. There are a lot of musicians who play the way the critics want it, so I don't see why it's a problem people like Yamashita play the way they want...
I can asure u that the smashing majority of these dumbasses can't play 1% of what Yamashita is capable, its just about jealousy. And before anyone think's this is not real, just pay attention at the Academic's teachers behave, they suck on this subject. Historical performance is something very new with historical instruments and still is something "dark" and distant to most of non historical instruments, classical guitar for instance. If u say to cellist that these BWVs was written for a spalla not a gamba instrument they will scold u. Most of classical guitarists don't have a enought knowledge of Baroque, they start to study this period by the "last" composer, I can say Bach is the guy u ll study after u really know what Baroque is. So, who "justifies" any critic to Yamashita playing Bach by historical blablabla mostly don't have any idea of what is talking about.
Yes Ive been searching this video too.. i think the first time it was there on youtube in 2006 .. This is stunning, perhaps one of the most favorite music of Bach on youtube, Yamashita played beautifully.. Regardless what the schollars said, he has proven that music should be like life, an explossion of freedom.. This BWV was written for spalla but he played as if Bach wrote it for guitar.. the whole piece and every passage subject and everything is just beautiful !.. all about bach, the energy surrounds everyone listening to Yamashita plays on the stage, i think many people feel the goosebumbs.. he is playing and breathing just like transfering the fresh air of meditation to you to go up high fly through time back to the 16-17th centuries.. the majestic and the atmosphere is phenomenal.. Thank you for sharing the video !
I bet Bach wouldn’t really want other artists trying to play exactly the way he composed, because as an artist you have to be able to appreciate individuality
Among the many renditions of this prelude on the guitar that I have seen here, Yamashita's is the only one that makes the music seem as if it were written for the guitar. Yamashita understands the uniqueness of and has exploited the musical potential of individual strings. The last things on his mind are ease of playing, open strings and initial positions. His playing covers practically all frets across the fingerboard and in many instances he keeps a musical line on the same string, moving along it up and down. (Segovia does exactly this in the 1007 Prelude) Yamashita's playing simply takes one's breath away. Utterly, utterly beautiful!
j'adore sa manière de jouer, il vit sa musique avec une intensité peu commune, presque au bord de la transe, et je l'admire pour cela ! Il ne joue pas, il transmet sa passion pour ce morceau de BACH, et ça c'est incommensurable ! Merci monsieur Kazuhito Yamashita.
I love BWV 1012 on Cello -- this is now my favourite version! The guitar shouldn't be able to sound like this, it is amazing. This version gives me the same goosebumps that the Cello rendition does!
He has impeccable technique and interpretation, I never get tired of hearing the preludes for cello, and it is also proof that Bach's music is universal (that is, it can be played by different instruments).
This is remarkable in so many ways. Yamashita sets very high standards on this piece for any one daring to face the work after him. Well played and articulated, bringing a number of voices out of that Ramirez. Don´t look for simple clean aesthetics here, this is a very intense performance revealing many sides of the composition. Great work indeed!
The thing I love most about Yamashita is that his music is just that: music. You could compare this to performances by any of the great players from more "traditional" instruments (even though guitar is pre-historic) and he is right up there. This simply transcends guitar. I think Bach would have proudly written for Yamashita had they been alive at the same time.
Great to read all this...I was always thrilled by Yamashita's live performances decades ago and got all his vinyls. Fantastic Nocturnal by Britten etc. Still after years it's nice to enjoy Bach's affects without this overwhelming egos. So I can understand both his fans and his critics. I like Hopkinson Smith's renderings of Bach. He opened me the door to the chaconne...fantasy and respect or better "Demut" as we say in german.
Genius. This is playing with character, not mere 'style'. It puts in relief how unimaginatively dull the modernist readings are that we usually hear of this music on the Classickle Gitahr.
Thanks for sharing your luck! This prelude is rarely heared on guitar and this performance is an excellent transcription (imo) - it very much captures the flow of the cello.
hi yamashita..u r amazing as always on the guitar with your engrossed moods & expression thru ur fingering with dynamic colours Is so delightful, lovable & at times enthralling..tks so much & God bless u as ever..warm regards..siva..india..(guitsiva)..
He has a powerful right-hand. Some people have that. I remember having to fill in for a theatre production in which I played the electric guitar. My amp was on pretty loud, and a friend of me get it over with his Ramirez classical guitar. How is that possible? People are born with such a right hand and even play the piano from underneath.
Master... he retunes at the end :) I'm going to look at some of this guys cds. I play a bit of guitar and a bit of cello. This is the first time I've heard the suites sound more beautiful to me on the guitar. Amazing.
when I first saw Kazuhito in 2000 I thought: "what is he doing ?!?" He gave 2 shows: an amazing performance and a light show because you were occasionally blinded by the reflection from the chandeliers ! My former boss told me that he once played for Segovia and was the "smoothest" player that night.
I love watching him adjust the tuning WHILE playing, without missing a beat! Extraordinary ❤
This is how Bach should be played - with phrasing, passion and excitement. This performance is engrossing and utterly stunning.
Yes. The Chaconne played by him is amazing!!!!

This man is an exceptional guitarist melting body, guitar, spirit and soul into complete ART ..................
He is the guitar.

Yamashita is a genious and geniouses are not always understood. I agree with you, if his interpretation touches your heart, that´s all!
and yet im yet to find a performance half as good as yamashita's.. lol
I bet Bach wouldn’t really want other artists trying to play exactly the way he composed, because as an artist you have to be able to appreciate individuality
Kazuhito,the worlds best Guitarist ever!
Yamashita makes a piece sound like it was written for guitar. A rare gift.
yes.
The audience waited until he finished, rather than after the last note, before clapping. A greater tribute than the applause.
The cougher that follows every classical concert even forgot to cough !
@@lemokolyon The now infamous Horowitz "cough" during his concert. 🤣🤣
One of the greatest classical guitarists of all time.

Kazuhito is a monster!! A true "guitar hero" GENIUS level
Totally!
Imagine he felt in love with a sword instead!!

Don’t know what to say. He is simply magnificent. I just discovered him. Shame he is not more centrally advertised.
This is my first time listening to this player. He has such a big, full, and powerful tone. I love it! Great, great player!
Bro, he is one of the best guitarrists of all time. Glad you discovered him.

He played from the bottom of his heart....Excellent!

The greatest interpreter of Bach I've ever heard...the old man would have been enthralled...deep passion and stunning technique...
Bach wasn't old. Not then. And you were not even sperm.
Amazing...one of the best and most inspiring performances of Bach on guitar I've ever heard!
I've been playing classical guitar for half a century. I believe this is a great performance. So well-done.
He frightens me so good!
I feel completely destroyed and humiliated.
This is the next level of playing!
Don't
Feel enlighted, inspired and motivated ! 😊
Beautiful...Touches the heart....Thank you
Great combination of intelligence and passion !I can feel his love and respect for Bach, and this must be the best play of BWV1012.
He has impeccable technique and interpretation, I never get tired of hearing the preludes for cello, and it is also proof that Bach's music is universal (that is, it can be played by different instruments).
Absolutely fantastic. The phrasing, the tempo, the dynamics...this rivals the best interpretations and performances of this prelude I’ve heard.
It's the best ever!! Yamashita rocks!!!!
best guitarist of classical guitarists.
aniello desiderio is better
The best rendition so far on guitar! Kudos to his masterful performance.
Dare I say it, the best there ever was or will be.

thank you so much for finding and sharing it!
30年前に松本市音文ホールでのコンサートを思い出します。穴の開きかけたギター、ボディーに頬を付けて弾くスタイル、暇さえあればチューニングを調整しながらの演奏。すべてが衝撃的でした。
still one of the best posts ever!
I am lost for words. Immense talent.
This piece and the way its played "gets' me every time!
He's not even looking for most of it, just memory and feeling, that's how badass he is!
What a great talent!

Forget all the other comments here and just listen to me: if you can sum up what we just heard, then what we must conclude is, "this is pretty good."
me encanta como toca esta pieza musical...interpreta con solides
If you ever hear of another guitarist that plays and creates music better than this then you'd be living on another more advanced planet than ours.
Music performed by a musician 👏
Abosulety..!
Yamashita released long before CD of Bach, unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas ,and cello suite.
I heard them so many times.
Whoa.
Wow.
The notes are being pumped out beautifully. With full control and color. And phrasing is spot on. So easy to feel the piece.
YES THEY PUT THIS BACK UP! I was so mad when they took it down because Kazuhito's version of this piece is Amazing!
yamashita should have been a rock star..deep inside he has a TRUE METAL heart
Extraordinaire guitariste passionné ❤❤

Genio tra i geni...
Wow, he actually turns his guitar into a cello. Highly remarkable playing.
It sings like the whole thing was played on open strings.
Yamashita é um Mestre dos Mestres.
Awesome!
Genius. Spirited. Character. Personality. Romantic.
Maravilloso
Very Good!!!
Master... he retunes at the end :)
I'm going to look at some of this guys cds.
I play a bit of guitar and a bit of cello. This is the first time I've heard the suites sound more beautiful to me on the guitar. Amazing.
Yamashita just brilliant
I actually loved Kazuhito’s passionate connection. He plays with lots of pain as he keeps the instrument so close to his heart
Stupid comment!!!!!
Incredible is the speed, even he raises the fingers from the frets
I believe he recorded the six cello suites in one year. A year before he did the violin suites and also released two other cds.
THE BEST.
Oh boy this is Good!
