- **PLEASE READ** Many of you wanted to see my Phantom Fly again so I hope you enjoy this comparison video for fun and a bit of aviation history gone by. I can tell you that I have put way more hours and time in this model than any other model I have ever had in 50 years. I also know plenty about Phantom jets, having spent 30 years in the Marine Corps Aviation field working on the RF4-B Photo recon birds when they were first introduced and worked on them till they were phased out.
I actually flew in them and know all the quirks.
And note this....not many air shows with old planes feature Phantoms because they also need special equipment to fly since they don't even self start!
So right out of my Natops flight manual, I present these facts and suggest that if you get the NitroPlanes ProJet F4, you incorporate some or all of the following options that are standard equipment on the real plane, and with good reason.
It's because the Projet flies just like a real phantom, and could use some of the real Phantom's equipment as McDonnell Douglas designed it. "What do they know?" LOL.
First of all, since they are very heavy and McDonnell Douglas incorporate a flying elevator in the real one. It scoops some of the turbine thrust to help at low speeds and can make a high Alpha approach easier. It's kinda like thrust vectoring.
Second.
It has Flaps and (Slats) on front of wing that increases airfoil even more than just rear flaps.
Third
It has BLC (Boundary Layer Control).
That means when the leading edge slats are down for takeoff and landing, there are slots all along the leading edge that blow 1000 mph hot air over the top of the wing, thus increasing lift that much more.
Fourth.
It has wheel Brakes, speed brakes, and drag chute because because the wheel brakes and speed brakes aren't enough either to slow down this sled.
I love this plane and hate it.
The CG must be right on, and I mean it.
So in flying this, I will simply say, the ProJet model is heavy, just like the real one.
It is also Pretty and can fly extremely fast with the Alloy Fans.
But the similarity ends there.
Consider this. Air is full size and the model is not.
That said, all my ducted fan gas nitro planes needed a cheater hole in the bottom. This was to allow more air in, as the stock intakes were not enough.
Adding a cheater hole to my Phantom increased thrust by a lot, as you can see in my test here.
This phantom also needs almost full power to fly because if you slow down, it drops like a brick....just like the real one.
So since none of those real options are present on this ProJet F-4 , I must say, even with all my experience, this jet is very hard to land due to lack of flaps and an efficient elevator.
Remember, with no air blowing across the control surfaces like a prop, the only way the controls work is for it to be flying fast, and the faster you go, the better they work.
And Fast it does!
I believe I have gone above and beyond the call of duty to work the bugs out on this plane for all of you who want to buy one, but alas, I am now going to retire it, while it is still in one piece and enjoy the exhilaration of flying it.
Thanks for watching.

VERY cool videos from the past! I didn't see any chutes on landing, but they still landed nice! The NP RC models aren't anywhere near the real thing, but they do look nice...
What an amazing job you've done on that plane and furthermore what a great video you've made representing the wisdom and knowledge that went in to the changes you made there. Much gratitude and respect for your contributions to UA-cam!
Thanks for the vid, Dave. Quite an introspection of the F4 Phantom in your older vids. Keep up the good work. I don't know if I'll ever be ready for NP's Phantom, lol.
Liked your videos of the carrier operations plus the details about the leading edge slats and elevators.
Awesome vid Dave. Love that old carrier footage. Kudos for the efforts on the model.
great to see her up in the air, very nice work repairing her Dave, you will sure enjoy this beauty in the garage now in 1 piece lol
Hey dave my brother was on the midway,he was on the midway during evac of veitnam at the end of the war,he lives in sandiego, and looks at the midway everytime he go,s down to seaport village.thanks dave the flying brick f4s are awsome.
great job mr. h, that was really an amazing video, but i really hate to see an amazing plane like that not work 100%. in conclusion, it was still an amazing vid and one of your best works!
Awww you changed the LED on the DX6i from red to blue! Very cool!
"What could go wrong?" I like the attitude!
Thanks for this vid, really enjoyed it.
great video, love all the old footage in the beginning.
This is absolutely one of the best vids I've seen on YT!
Awesome work Dave, sometimes they are just made to look good on a shelf ;-)
The MOST beautiful jet EVER made!!
Love the Phantom!
I like the background music when your are flying it.
Great Video like always, Your videos are some of my favorite rc videos.
Adding flaps and slats could be a futur mod video, if your up to it:) Oh and might I ask why you only have 2 1/2 pounds of thrust on a 7 pound jet?
sounds like a real jet at 11:15, nice original videos too, love it!
awesome vid and if i know you Dave you enjoyed the challenge trying to make it rite great old vids too.
Wow tons of very interesting information in this video!! Thanks!
That thing moves!
Awesome Video!
You have to love the F-4 pretty much, I guess.LOL.
Greetings from Germany : )
With all your experience in the RC world, to see you spend so much time to perfect it, i am asking the question, maybe the designers had it wrong. Its a pretty jet though.
You managed to fix it!!! Great
@Allwaystaynfly
it could only have that amount of thrust for realism.
however, he was doing a static thrust test, EDF fans will usualy put out more thrust when in the air (having fast moving air blowing thru the intakes.)
I Really Liked The Super 8 Videos, You Should Post Them Alone. WOW!!
Great Vid!
It sure looks like it's a handful to fly.
Cool I never knew you used to fly the real planes lol
Great video, really liked all the explaination of the F-4 etc, really interesting footage etc.. However, you have to ask is this jet really worth it with all the stress, expense and time of repairs? It must be disheartening knowing that every time you flew a crash was almost inevitable due to the lack of high lift devices and design in the airframe... Maybe the thrill outweighs all of that, just a thought... Admirable effort though, and thanks for the vid :)
You might of thought of this already but what about trying spoilerons to help slow the plane down while landing.
nice vid dave
@NightFlyyer haha! my cheapo twin jpower 64mm fans with 3970kv motors have just under 8POUNDS together of thrust! that is just toooooooo crazy!
Hey night flyer, got a question. Are flaperon a effective way of slowing my aircraft down when landing? I have a tag interceptor that I could cut flaps into the alierons, but it a bit of work. Just wondering if I can get away with flaperon. You being a pilot and all, just wanted your opinion.
whoaaa wobbly
the "flying elevator" also made the real F4 fly over the sound barrier.
Needs at least 5lb of thrust dont you think? 90mm metal fan unit and 7s 65c pack..to bad you cant get a little less wieght and a little more thrust...like you said though stellar effort..thanks for the vid and the extra input for a Nitroplanes product..I have many of their models..you should try the new Dynam 3D line of planes. Sbach, Peaks and Devil all great planes for fly for foamy action...4s 2200 packs for all of them.
what do you think about the f/a-18 super hornet
I have the same RC Controller :) Spektrum DX 6i
8:10 when you said: we have the Technology, I splited Coke through my nose holes on My keyboard Laughing, Great Video, Great story, Plenty of efforts, thanx for sharing :)
E type Jaguar!!!!!! There amazing!!!!!!!! In england there so comfoey to sit in
when did you retire and what wars did you fight in?
@NightFlyyer thanks for the reply, very nice video (:
well while your taking flight requests, can I see your blade 400 fly? :D
@NightFlyyer yeah that is pretty heavy! haha.
i got the bigger a-10 from bananahobby that same with retracts. (the thing weighed 5 POUNDS) i thought, oh my god that would never get off the ground. i hacked off the crappy retracts and saved extra servos. got some esc that were shrinkwrapped instead of with a big metal heatsink and its like only 2.5 lbs with teo 3s 2200mahs and it has a 2 to 1 thrust ratio! im going to have to put some more carbon fiber in the wings! haha uits gunna fall apart
That was a lot of very usefull information but i think you have put me of the phantom as it sounds to much work to get it to fly and make it fun {"_*}
hey yeah rebuild !
maybe try other fans besides nitroplanes? maybe gp hyperflow or e-flite delta-V 15e?
i ve yet to see any one land this f4 , i ve seen four people fly it and none landed in one piece
Yep..it sure is a pretty one. But, if it's un-flyable then....well... I still can't get over how much the real ones smoked when flying. It's like putting a huge engine on a brick to make it stay in the air. It's still an awesome aircraft though..beautiful in it's own ugly way...lol
lol Major Spooner
Very cool videos
i think that one needs a viking burial...
such an expensive memory! haha
give dave a motor and a single wing..he will make it fly..no problem...
better introduce cheater holes at top, since bottom holes increase suction at bottom consequently decreasing lift.
RC MiG with AIRBRAKES! (see side bar) take off landing crash by rc powers
if dave herbert cant mod it to fly well, no one can.
basically this is a other plane you dont buy from nitroplanes
Hey- I've seen a lot of your great flying and I've got to say- that plane must be a PIG if you can't fly it! Disappointing design, huh?
"Way more time than any other plane in 50 years." Never made one from scratch? LOL
@Allwaystaynfly because it sucks! shouldve gone with a higher kv motors! my foam twin 64mm jpower a-10 hahas the same thrust! and the whole thing weighs no more than 2.5 lbs.
Phantoms look like flying penguins and we all know penguins can't fly.
I am glad your not a terrorist.
We would be in trouble.
Sorry, a TGA INTERCEPTOR.
flying coffin
That is an awful to fly plane isn't it?
