  • How to create a FAKE DRUM ROOM SOUND
    A cool way to add a fake room sound to your drums. There are several ways to achieve this but this technique is one of my favorite.

    Great tutorial Chris!... Although your tips and hints can be applied to any other daw, you are a real ambassador for Cubase and these kind of tutorials I really missed when I ever bought Cubase some years ago. I had to find it all by myself. That's why I am very glad with you and your channel and I assume Cubase must be happy with you as well :)

    Nicely done with stock plugins - although it is usual to high-pass into the reverb for this kind of application to reduce mud in low frequencies.

    Thanks Chris. Very convincing "Room" emulation technique. And, yes, per Vlad's comment, I think the "Room" could be enhanced with some saturation, or, who knows what -- as always, depending on the product. :-) this one gets saved as an Effect Chain preset.

      Throw a tube screamer on in the chain somewhere or in parallel. Play with the amount of wet/dry. Definitely get the compression and saturation.

    3:00 jesus - I have used low pass and high pass of Cubase EQ quite a bit, but this is the first time I see them in green - didn't know there was a switch for "pre" mode!!

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  5 років тому

      Yes, filters, Gain and Phase are Pre... This way you don't need to use the filters out of the 4 band EQ

    In my opinion, I would also use this technique in a situation where I’d record a band live in the studio (and especially in situations where the drummer doubles as the lead singer and/or even a backup singer! The way I would achieve this trick is as follows :
    1. I’d close-mic each and every single drum AND cymbal on a given kit (yes, I know that’s stretching it, and not everybody has the budget to do that, but sometimes you just have to go the extra mile)
    2. Use a stereo Blumlein mic for recording overheads (again, go the extra mile whether or not you can afford it, you only got one life to live), but only use it for reference!
    3. Here’s the secret : listen for the L/R placement of each close mic within the overheads, and then pan the close mics to exactly where you can hear them in the overheads! Then delete the “reference” overheads track, and route ALL of the close drum/cymbal mics to the fake drum room aux track!

    • @brandoncooke6564
      @brandoncooke6564 8 місяців тому +1

      So, I really like this idea and it is definitely something I plan to try out at some point! My only real confusion is, why do you use the Blumlein technique as opposed to just using a more "standard" setup like a spaced pair, or XY? Especially when it's not even being used for the overall sonic quality, only the placement, I would think the Blumlein technique would actually give you a narrower stereo field, as well as less precise placement of the individual cymbals within that field. I could definitely be wrong, but was just curious!

    • @ZacharyRedFulton
      @ZacharyRedFulton 8 місяців тому

      @@brandoncooke6564 This is more or less a personal thing, but to me, the Blumlein configuration is a much more simplistic approach to “recording” overheads in my aforementioned practice - not to mention it was also the old-school way of capturing a sound source’s stereo image in natural form before spaced pair and XY (which is basically the same thing as Blumlein) came into awareness.
      Furthermore (and again, this is more or less a personal thing), I want my fake room mic sound to be mono-compatible, because if you really think about it, your mixes are not always going to be heard or played back in true stereo, which is why I can’t stress enough the importance of mixing in mono - and there are a few UA-cam videos that explain this concept in great detail. Besides, you can always use a stereo imager after the fact to make it as wide or narrow as you like.

    Hey Chris, I missed one these kind of videos, super good! These are the soul of your channel. The delay here is this kind of thing that you almost don’t hear, but feel. It is incredible how it affects the result as you show with and without at the end.
    In the case you already have a room sound (from a real recording or from a library), would you still try to add some amount of this fake room, too?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  5 років тому

      It depends on the drum sound I'm looking for. Sometime yes, I will add this either way, and sometimes not

    Totally novice when it comes to recording and mixing, but I've always seen most folks say to use 100% wet on any time effects when using a bus. I like the idea of using 40% wet reverb as it allows that delay to come through. Just curious if this ever causes phasing issues? Awesome content and really appreciate the knowledge you are passing along here!

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 роки тому

      No phasing issues since the delay is 100% Wet before hitting the Reverb :-)

    Hi man, are you still getting up at 6 o clock and see the benefits, if I remember correctly?? I read something about waterfasting for 3 days, that can reset the body/organs well...Moral of my story: we all need to be careful with our health, because due to our passion we forget to take rests, especially in a studio-seting, recordingdays...Thanks Chris for your superb videos and I bought your course of Cubase a while ago!!!!
