Star Trek: The Cage / Menagerie -- The Rescue-Assault For Capt. Pike (w/ Marvel Avengers music!)

  • In the pilot episode of Star Trek (the original series), the Talosians abduct Captain Christopher Pike, commander of the starship Enterprise. A rescue mission is planned for a direct assault with the ship's weaponary against the laser-resistant entrance of his captors' underground complex.
    With a recent viewing of The Avengers movie that left it's theme music ringing in my ears for days, I just knew this would be the perfect "rescue-assault music" (trimmed to fit, of course) for that all-sound-effects Star Trek sequence. While at it, I also resized the Star Trek picture from "square" TV (standard for the 1960's when this was made) to today's "widescreen" experience! It now sings!

    This was one of many great SFX from "The Cage"/"The Menagerie". In the pilot episode, the term "phaser" had not yet been introduced, but in the context of the series we might suppose that one of the ship's main phasers had been transported to the site of the Talosian elevator, mounted and rigged to receive energy beamed from the ship. It turned out that the "indestructible" elevator was really just a Talosian telepathic illusion, so that 6.2 zettawatt phaser beam must have shot off into far space.

      The Laser Cannon is more likely to be a field artillery piece carried for the exact purpose seen in the pilot. A sort of Star Fleet pack howitzer for the contingent of marines that all cruisers carry.
      A weapon from the ship's actually built in defence battery would be massive by comparison.

      Let me share this story with you: I always thought that carrying the old style laser canon would have been a great sub plot in Star Trek: Nemesis. Picard requested a concentrated phaser fire blast while the Enterprise was decimated. Commander La Forge responded that phasers were only at 4%. What if the Enterprise would have been relocating the old laser canon to planet x or to a starbase, etc. Now, the laser canon would have it's own power pack and would not be detected by Picard 2.0 . That would have been a nice arc to the story. A diversion or something....

      I'm sure you know that the FX of Star Trek TOS were already updated and remastered, but I must disagree regarding the original music needing updating. TOS music was pretty groovy as is, however, this mix was brilliant. If memory serves, however, the original scene didn't have music at all, relying on the intense action and suspense with the sound FX to carry through. Still, your point is made, Woody Barrett, because this Avengers music fit so well with the timing and all. BTW, I'm 55 and was there during Star Trek's debut. I also collected the comic books of the day, including the Avengers. Great stuff.

    • @danarseti
      @danarseti 5 років тому

      Dan Basta, you are not wrong. I totally agree, TOS ep is perfect as is, without music, allowing the action of the scene to stand on its own. I was merely commenting on the choice and timing of the "Avengers" music that fits the scene. On an aside note; although I enjoy Star Trek Discovery, I can only accept it as a straight-up reboot or alternate timeline. How dare the showrunners keep insisting it takes place in the Prime Canon. And there's no such thing as a "Prime Timeline" if you choose to "visually update." IMHO, if they really want to show how fancy the Trek Tech can be in the Prime Canon, they should have made it take place post-Voyager. It wouldn't have taken much to rework the characters/circumstances to line up with the Prime Canon. e.g. the Sarek/Spock angle could have been 24th or 25th century descendants and the Klingon visual update could have been a retrogress virus or something based on the 22nd Century Augments from Star Trek Enterprise. I see for the second season, however, the Discovery showrunners are caving in on the Klingons by giving them TNG type hair and beards and bringing back the TOS D7. In conclusion, I can appreciate a fan updating the music for a TOS scene as a "Hey, that's cool" kind-o goof, but for CBS to attempt to visually update a perfect show and make it like this is how is "should" have been is an insult. I stand by my opinion(s); this You Tube video updating the music of a TOS scene is cute and cool, but does not affect TOS. Star Trek Discovery is an alternate timeline (Period)
