From Hobbyist to Full-time Roguelike Developer: Tracing my route from before I even knew what a roguelike was to years of exploring the genre and community before setting out to create a grand and innovative roguelike with just the right mix of traditional and modern features to help guide the genre towards a more mainstream audience without losing anything that makes roguelikes great. For the past three and a half years, Josh Ge (aka Kyzrati) has been working on Cogmind, a sci-fi robot-building roguelike with a focus on audiovisual immersion and a combination of procedural and handmade content. Josh has spent years helping other developers in the community, writing articles about building roguelikes, and also created REXPaint, a widely-used ASCII art and roguelike development tool.
"We're getting close to 1.0" ;)
I've played Cogmind for a very long time. It's really awesome and just has so much content and possibilities in each run. There are so many different endings too!
That's a beautiful looking game, totally admire the desire to bring these games to a bigger audience too. Good work, looking forwards to picking this one up.
All the nods towards new players and general accessibility are really awesome. Especially when you can add features (as he pointed out: better graphics, sound effects, responsive UI) which don't detract from the classic formula, it's really worth adding them in.
I like the concept of Roguelikes. I like the development techniques behind roguelikes, but I never played nor wanted to play a traditional roguelike because of the ASCII art and the unpolished aspect of most of them. But Cogmind...WOW! I'm getting this game. Also Josh Ge, without formal CS education, must be a coding genius to develop this highly technical, complex, and polished game. WOW! I'm going to read everything on his blog!
I am so happy to watch this! :,D
would have loved this to be a 2 hour talk. lots of awesomeness. ill be sure to checkout the blog
I was pumped for Cogmind alrady, even more so now. I'm buying it soon, and will gladly support such dedicatd and promising dev!
Cogmind is really good, and keeps getting better each release (which have been about monthly, lately). Go get it!
Already did, seems to be something that will need some time put into getting to know, and will be worth it. I was able to play easly (beginning), but mastering it will require quite a lot more effort ;)
I wish this had more views! Such fabulous content!
this channel has so many good videos...I won't lie, it's a little dream to produce a roguelike and attend roguelike celebration.
I hope GOG gets this game on their site, looks so good.
