.357 Sig is outstanding(outperforms 10mm ime) and you can run .357 sig in your .40 with just a barrel change. Forget about the 9mm rhetoric about increased terminal performance, increased capacity and the flat out lie About less bullet development with .40s&w. With a great load like these Winchester Ranger T’s(bonded ammo) it’s a 1 shot and they’re done deal many times with .40 My M&P 1.0 holds 15 rounds in the mag, that’s a hellava lot of capacity. As a former LEO, at the agency I worked for the longest, we carried the 180 gr. Ranger-T and a G22 Gen 3. This proved to be a very effective threat stopper! The biggest BG was over 6’2 and well over 300 lbs. He took 3 COM and was sipping tea w his maker before his carcass hit the deck! Another guy robbed a liquor store and got in to a shootout during a traffic stop. He took a round through the knuckle on the hand pointing a gun at the LEO, and the projectile filleted his arm wide open like a fat, puffy lobster tail and exited at the elbow. The cartridge was a mild shooting one and rapid shots were easy. Also, it punched through windshields and other auto glass and vehicle doors (within reason) just fine. Not all LEOs are shooters and couldn’t handle the phenomenal 10mm Norma Spec ammunition. Ultimately, this led to the .40, and still, too many couldn’t shoot this well. Now too many are shooting 9mm and it’s once again proving fairly anemic on the streets especially as ranges increase. Also, it’s taking more rounds on target to stop aggressive threats. Sure, there’s issues of yesteryears guns not handling 10mm Norma, and the Glock Gen 3 will handle .40… just change the RSA appropriately. Additionally, agency budgets are a real thing, and 9mm is simply cheaper. For shooters wanting the best defensive cartridge, it’s the 10mm loaded to Norma spec followed by .40. The .45 is still viable, but for the most part, limited capacity. I prefer 15 as a base line.
Yep, and people forget from the FBI tests saying 9mm is adequate that the FBI was using modern HPs +P out of a 4.5 inch barrel. That's a little different than a regular or low recoil 9 coming from a 3 inch barrel subcompact that a lot of people carry.
This rhetoric about 9mm increased terminal performance has become dangerous with Tons of people abandoning .40 for 9mm or buying 9mm for their first instead of buying a .40 they could shoot just as well in many peoples case. Also, the downright lies that their is allot more bullet development for 9mm and that their hasn’t been bullet development recently for .40 is dangerous. The capacity argument for 9mm is absolute bullshit as well! My M&P 1.0 holds 15 rounds of .40 or .357 Sig which is only 2 rounds less than a 9mm with less real world stopping power as you and I both know. Even Sig Sauer themselves has abandon their own outstanding invention .357 Sig and stopped making ammo for it. Sig is laughing all the way to the bank with all the 9mm’s their selling! Godspeed
@ryanjofre people just read the FBI report blindly. They don't look at the data for themselves or critically think about it. The same bullet designs in a 9mm are in every other caliber. Yeah, 9mm may be a more effective round now and may be a decent base line. But that also means every other caliber gets the same bump. And given that I'm not a commando or body guard putting down suppressing fire with my pistol, I would much rather make sure each round is as effective as possible for the frame I'm carrying. If I need a small, pocketable gun, a 9mm+p probably is the better option, especially given that most micro .40s etc. are no longer made except for smith and wesson shield. But if I can carry even Glock double stack subcompact size, give me the .40 or .357 sig.

Amazing performance from both rounds. They are excellent performers even from a short barrel. You provide the best testing on the internet. Your frequency of testing is appreciated!
I have a bunch of the 180g T series along with other top brands but this makes me feel confident in carrying them in my EDC. Thanks for the content you put out.
This is a great test! Most of the gel tests on here dont have successful tests, where they shoot the edges, the table, the gel is too dark, etc, but thiz one is picture perfect! I want these so badly in 45 and 9mm but they're never in stock. Unfortunately as well is the fact that they are no longer bonded to their cores like the talons were, so some tests have failures to expand. Great vid!
low energy for .40. As good as .40 is, it just illustrates how freakin awesome .357 sig is. the 155gr and lighter 40s can hang...would love to see the UW 150gr nosler

that's the problem with big ammo .. they intentionally and universally down load the 40 while supercharging the 9. the 165 is kinda close to full but the 180 isn't even close. but still performed well. the 357sig enjoys the favor of manufacturers they don't consider it to be a direct competitor to the 9. it and the 40 are great rounds

The 165gr Ranger-T is a fantastic cartridge. Very controllable with easy and fast followup shots. Expansion with sharp pedals .80 to .92" I've observed. They really developed this cartridge right. Cheap NOPE! Great YES! This is a very effective around, when I am tired in the morning and feeling sluggish just one round in my buttocks will get me up and going!

Both were very nice, I've always preferred 150gr to 165gr in .40 180gr is great for 10mm but it's a little heavy for .40. I really look forward to your tests. Thanks and have a wonderful day.
@hopebrowning6300 Are you talking w/ compact or full size pistol too? The ammo I use in 180gr are fine. And I watch Tools&Targets do a lot of tests as well w/ no problems.
The 180 ranger t is my edc carry. I have had great results with it doing my own testing. My only complaint is I am having an impossible time find more ranger t in any grain.😢
Yeah its a awesome round but usually very difficult to find. When u do u have to grab it right away cause it usually doesn't last long. Thanks for checkin this one out buddy!!
The T Series is a bonded bullet jacket that will absolutely give you more penetration with obstacles like car doors. As such, it’s absolutely dangerous for defending your home if you have a family. One needs to train for this or ideally go with a different load! Winchester gives law enforcement a good price on this ammo and conversely overcharges on the bonded PDx1 Defender ammo, it’s obscenely expensive!😱 Those bullets mushroomed beautifully, outstanding ammo. The 180grain is absolutely my favorite.
Great info , just subbed and bought my first .40 . Needed info not so much on the round but real world info on bullet weights . Not for edc but backpacking and 4 legged critters ( and hopefully not meth heads )
Nice presentation. Great round. Underappreciated way too much. A thought: could you hold for a few seconds with a full view of the top of the block before or after you scan over it? I like to screenshot these for future reference. A full top shot with both fired rounds sitting on the top would be great. Just a thought. And thank you for the wonderful content!
Wow, where are you getting the T-series 165s from? I havent seen them on the market in over 10 years. I have one magazine with 13 rounds of it from over a decade ago that to me is worth its weight in gold. The 180s are still on the market.
Try OpticsPlanet I just picked up 3 boxes earlier this week. We're $22.99 a box. It's a very good round , the expansion was amazing. Almost the size of a quarter. Have a wonderful day.
I have some of these in my ammo can and I'm trying to figure out if they are the 165 or the 180. Can you tell the difference by whats stamped on the end of the case?
No sir they have the same head stamp. U will have to throw them on a scale. The 165gr will weigh 244gr as a whole and the 180gr will weigh 260 as a whole. Hope that helps.
Being a ballistician and combat vet bro I’ll tell you this, I love the Hornady FTX fanboys…. Projectiles that cant even dump all that energy if they don’t stay in the target and with an average expansion of about .60 from .40, you’re ending up with an over penetration problem nine times out of 10 so yeah that energy really does count in the guy that hits and the innocent person behind him lol…. I’ll stick to rounds that dump their energy completely in the first 8 to 10 inches of the target continue to 12 inches the bust their spine, and not make anybody suffer anymore than they have to if I have to find myself in that situation ever again. So, in other words, you couldn’t go wrong with either one of these, but I say the 180 definitely has better performance overall.
The Hornady critical duty bullet in 9 mm is like 60% of the reason that cops have to shoot people 11 times to get them to stop lol. But honestly it’s not even funny people should not have to suffer in order to be immolated as a threat.
@@LH-rh8vi if you want shallow penetration you want a lighter .40. The 180 gr is more likely to over penetrate. 165 is less likely. Or better yet corbon 135 gr at 1325 fps.
Ballistic gel/ water is quite different than human tissue. We are aqueous beings…. The 180 without expansion will definitely overpenetrate, and by this logic I carry 165 in the summer, and 180 in the winter. I have unfortunately had to put both projectiles in human targets in my former LE employment, and both rounds stopped underneath the back layer of epidermis, leaving more or less braille like lumps on the perpetrator’s back. Only passthrough I have seen was out of an HK UMP .40. The newer, wider mouth 180s (new RA40T) penetrate no more than 12” consistently and they look more like an HST with talons 😮 Nasty….. The Ranger Ones aren’t awful but clog more than the standard T Series 180s. Just my .02 brother!
😄 I definitely feel ya on that one. Absolutely one of my favorites too, to tests and just in general. Awesome caliber and round!! I have a bunch of sig tests coming up for ya. Thank you as always my friend, I appreciate u checkin em out!! Plenty on the way😁👍.
.40 calibers are really good round I do like it I have a 40 caliber for defensive purposes but I saw the 45 Federal HST and with the 9 mm Federal HST test that he did and I thought the 45 HST blew the 9 mm completely away and did a lot better than the 40 ranger T-Series did shop for you people out there thinking that the 40 caliber has got something on the 45 year and you're delusional
Why do you say "round" mean you mean "bullet"? A "round" is an entire cartridge, which doesn't exit the barrel. Only a BULLET exits the barrel and hits the target.
I feel like the difference between the two is so similar that you'd need high tech equipment to really know the difference. Maybe one stop someone faster than the other but it's too hard to tell so either way you'd be fine
165gr is the round I use in my edc G27. Thank you for this informative test. You're letting me know that I made a good choice. Blessings and be safe.

Try it with 4 layers of material there are lots of video where they don't open I have tried them and had around 50% failures
Impressive!!
@@frankaxiak1959 I appreciate u checkin it out!! Will have a new video coming out Sunday with the same ammo. Retest, more recent. Thanks again!
Good test. I don't know of too many folks wearing 4-layers of denim on a regular basis.
The .40 is an excellent caliber and is powerfull. The glock 23 gen. 5 is very reliable and the recoil is very, very good.
Agreed. I had the Gen4 and I like the Gen5 a lot better. It's a fantastic firearm.
If you ever get the chance to shoot a Beretta PX4 Storm in .40, do it. Felt recoil is 20-30% less than Glock.
@@iHumanist I doubt that with the new gen5 g23.
Great test, Thank you!...
Thank you!!
Still love my 40
both are great expanders
Wow, where are you getting the T-series 165s from? I havent seen them on the market in over 10 years.
I have one magazine with 13 rounds of it from over a decade ago that to me is worth its weight in gold.
The 180s are still on the market.
Awesome 🤙
Good job man, thank you.
Thank you, appreciate u checkin it out!!
Is recoil a bit snappy with those light rounds?
In a short barrel .40 I always carry 155 gr or 135 gr.
Nice presentation AZ! We appreciate these real world demonstrations....
I went to buy Underwood 165gr 40 s&w but didn't see them listed on their site anymore ...
Try OpticsPlanet I just picked up 3 boxes earlier this week. We're $22.99 a box. It's a very good round , the expansion was amazing. Almost the size of a quarter. Have a wonderful day.
Appreciate your excellent video, both rounds performed great and either one would do the job. New subscriber. Thx
Thank you very much, I appreciate the support and u checkin it out!! Plenty on the way😁👍.
Good stuff 👍👍👍👊
Thanks buddy!!
Those are black talons without the black. Reincarnated.
I would like to the range difference. Like at 50 yds.
Thank you @@AzAirgunner.
40 ain't going nowhere
In my state , the State Patrol and Sheriff's Deputies alone will keep it alive. Lol.
Basically the same round as the black talon without the lubalox coating.
40,is,a,badass,o,yes
I noticed that 180gr pushed that block back at least an inch!!
Where'd the cloth go?
👏🏾👏🏾
Barrel length?
Bet them 165 gr will really shine in a full size barrel
Yessir. I did a jug test a while back with the full size and it did really well. I will have a gel test up soon with the full size for ya.
I’ll take the 180gr basically same energy so I’d rather have the more mass for penetration
Would love some of those rounds
.40 S&W pistol or .40 S&W ammo? because that looks like a Glock sir.
That’s an anemic 165 grain. Hornady ftx runs 1175 in 165 grain 500 ft lbs.
@@LH-rh8vi I’ve always thought 40 was better than 9. What’s your real world experiences
Why on earth would 9mm people call the 40 "short and weak"? It makes zero sense coming from them. 10 mm people are another matter.
Which is best bro for the Glock 22? New sub I'm from Philippines
I'm afraid you spoiled me with the 357 Sig tests. Everything else is now just boring.
