I just ordered a couple of boxes of the .40 caliber in 165gr. Going to carry it in my glock g35 long slide. All of the tests ive seen with it has great performance, very good expansion. Nice. Good choice for the homestead. I have a couple of G35 MOS's in the family. Every once in a while I will see/hear of someone who carries a 9mm, but on the bedside table rests a 35. My unicorn goes to my range with me, but I keep it safe- my G24.
Great test. The 40 gets the win in my book. But the 9 is no slouch. Both look good in this test. The still especially demonstrate how much better the 40 performs over the 9. Looks great. Thank you.
Thanks for the fair comparison. There are many who feel the 40 is on the way out, but i feel it is just as viable as any other effective modern handgun cartridge. With todays edc preferences trending towards small/consealable handguns, i can understand why the 9 is most popular, but by no means is the 40 on the way out IMHO.
That is probably the best 9mm SD load that Winchester has now. I have about 900 rounds of this stuff left as a stash load. It is very good out of g17, g34 and 17 Long Slide as well. Thanks for testing this.
That slow mo side view is what really shows the damage, the expansion lifting the block off the table and opening up a temporary cavity that's probably 12 inches or better in diameter is where the real damage is done. Still, my choice will always be Speer Gold Dot for ammo.
@@c.r.chandler5905 Thank you buddy, I really appreciate that and appreciate u always taking the time to comment & check em out!! Thank you!! Should be a fun season😁.
Good test, AZ! Once again it just shows that 40 s&w spanks 9mm in every way possible! While not a big fan of either rounds (I'm a 10mm kind of guy) there is no doubt that the 40 is very clearly the better of these two rounds. I have some Win 165 gr Defender bullets and it looks like I will have to down load them to around 1200 fps as anything more and they tend to come apart. Oh well! Cheers, jc

Great testing as always. Thank you for honest reviews. I have local store carrying bonded Rangers. $27 for 124+p and $29 for 165 grn 40 cal bonded ranger. Those are 50 round count boxes!
Thankfully, from both professional and personal experience, I no longer carry a pistol chambered in 9 Minimal. Instead, I reverted to the much more effective .40 Stout & Wicked for both daily carry and home defense.
The 40 still wins even though the +P 9mm is loaded to a lot higher pressure to try to be like a 40. The 40 just does what it does without needing the bell curve handicap of +P’s high pressure. Remember 40/9 both start out at the exact same pressure (about 35-36,000 psi) but when you throw +P in the mix, the 9’s higher pressures and faster slide velocity (bad things for battering lock up and frame impacts) far exceed 40. The 9 will never be a 40 no matter what you do to it. I’m sticking with the all around better performing 40 while keeping pressure the same or lower than 9 and keeping slide velocity lower.
Great test as usual AZA. These bonded Defenders make consistent spiral cuts and achieve full expansion even at the .40's unimpressive velocity. Noteworthy is the 9mm needs 200fps higher velocity to achieve similar results.
I think you made a very good video to show the data very accurately for a simulated gut shot or a shot that missed the ribs in the summer time. Something that I would ask would be simulation in the winter time as well if the shots hit a rib. The easiest way I have seen is by using two pieces of denim to simulate a jacket for winter, and a piece of a 1/4 inch piece of ply wood to simulate a rib. That way I believe you can get more accurate data on the ammunition you are using. Just remember not all brands of ammunition are created equal, and pick out the caliber and brand of ammunition that you can shoot quickly and accurately with, Again great video with some really good data. For me it just makes me want to ask those questions.
You do great tests bro thanks. The 9mm from that short a barrel was impressive more than I usually give Winchester credit for. Leave me some comments at least on Modern Meat Target tests
@@DanTheWolfman Thank you buddy I appreciate that and always appreciate u taking the time to check em out!! I can absolutely do that for ya!! Thanks again!!
What do you think about getting a 9mm conversion barrel for the G27 (or the G26 firearm), that way you are truly comparing apples to apples. It would be great to see if the testing results differ from the ones in this video. Also, why didn’t you include the 180 grain PDX1 for 40 S&W…. you think it would only make sense seeings you’re comparing it to a +P 9mm round.
180 grain does not open as much and penetrates farther. A 124 grain plus P load is not a comparison to a heavy .40 load. How about a 147 9mm to 180 .40 , that would be fair. 165 grain is a mid weight .40 round . The 124 grain 9mm is a mid weight round in that caliber.
these are same basically. right at 400fpe. won't see that significant a difference in live tissue wounding. The 9x19 PDX1 is pretty exceptional as far as velocity goes; most of these rounds are watered down from rated. From a 4" we could expect 430fpe or more
Yeah because he used a super hot 9mm load vs a standard pressure 40s&w round. 9mm fanboys always do that & even then the 40s&w still leaves a larger wound channel.
180 gr is the way to go. Less recoil, increases cycling reliability, more mass and penetration on target, and what the round was originally designed for at 950fps which is 647 mph.... devastating
absolutely wrong. Energy is what incapacitates, not mass and penetration. the 180gr .40 is a loser cartridge...every single no-stop shooting with high round count .40s is that load.
@@bobjones-bt9bh your statement is a lie, 180gr is what the 40 cal was initially designed with that the FBI and law enforcement agencies started with, you're saying they didn't drop anyone with one shot stops til they lowered the gr ? So before I make this statement, allow me to say I like .40 and I use .40 periodically. I most definitely keep .40 caliber pistols on hand for reasons of necessity born of being around as long as I have as a gun owner and user in the United States. And of course I too purchase ammo for them. Ok then, as stated I like .40 however, I don't love it either. Fair enough? That being put out there, with a performance showing as similar as these two were in this particular demonstration, why would I want to put up with the greater recoil and wear and tear on the gun using the .40 when I could just use the 9mm. and get slightly quicker follow up shots and less of the aforementioned negatives? I'm speaking "in this case" because all ammo is not created equal and it certainly varies from weight to weight and brand to brand. But in this case, the performance seems so close that I don't see the need to be messing with .40 if it weren't necessary. Granted, this .40 is pretty impressive but to me, not enough to warrant using it over the 9mm. offering in this brand.
What it means is you pick a good load for your caliber and practice being accurate. I have 9mm's , .40's , .45's and 10mm's. I have plenty of good ammo for all of them . The .40's in Glock were not beefed up to handle the higher recoil impulse in the first gens. Starting with gen 4 they finally increased recoil spring weight to better handle the cartridge. The Gen 5 Glocks in .40 now have a thicker slide and they are very nice to shoot. I have put after market 20lb recoil spring in my gen 3 and that helps. Sig-Sauer P229 was built to handle .40 caliber. S&W M&P 40 handles well also.
I swear it seems like these manufacturers deliberately under load and undermine the potential of the 40 SW. It was a great performance but it should have at least came out the short barrel at 1100 fps. Great test and performance as usual.🫡
