      I just “killed” my Yamaha 32 so I switched to a Pearl 105 which is similar to the Di Zhao. Personally always preferred a warmer sound than crisp...

      I liked the Di Zhao, I personally thought the sound was cleaner and brighter.

      katieflute I prefer the Di Zhao most. The sound is richer, including more body in the lower register. I suspect this will blend much better with an ensemble, which is super important for players at the beginner instrument level.

      I also like the Di Zhao. Seemed like it was less effort for you to really get in that upper register and cruise around there.

    The first 2 just doesn't compare to the last one, they sound a bit "plastic-y", yet the last one has a round, wooden-like sound and the colors of each note are homogeneous, nothing shrill, especially audible when you play articulations! Great video as always, Katie!💖

  • @jayemarsh6231
    @jayemarsh6231 4 роки тому +21

    The di Zhao seems to have better articulation in all registers, consistent tone in all registers, and a strong tone in the lower octave. I'd recommend that one for flutists new to piccolo!

    You can definitely hear the individual quality of each piccolo improve as you go through the price ranges. For me, the cheapest piccolo produces quite a lot of "undertones" and as you move to the move expensive models (especially the Chinese model), the "undertones" are less obvious.
    I'm not a flute or piccolo player, but what is the reason for this perceived phenomenon?

      PJR76 / Big Phil more attention to detail on the headjoint cut and tone hole under/over cutting.

    Me and my friends found piccolos in the orchestra room (because that's where the concert band kids play) and most of them where rust old metal ones but then in the back we found like a brand new $4000 Yamaha one

    I have a composite Roy Seaman Storm piccolo (and I own a second head joint that is wood to make it sound nicer for indoor playing) and I stand by composite materials. I also live in a desert so I wanted that was sturdy and resilient to weather changes. The Di Zhao is perfect for anyone looking for a decent instrument that can be played inside or outside. There's just something about the composite sound that is the perfect middle ground. It's sweeter than plastic or metal yet it can pierce through when you need it. Spend a little bit more for an instrument that will last long and will sound better in the long run.

    I loved the first and second picolos. I have to say after following you for 4 years now going on 5. My interest of learning the flute has highly increased, that after doing some research and learning Tin whistles have similar note arrangements that I picked myself a Clarke green Tin Whistle in the key of D for my beggining journey. I have been having learning it n getting used to it and cant wait to upgrade to a flute someday in the future. Thanks for the encourgement.

      If you want a really good piccolo that is like the Di Zhao she was playing look up Kessler and Sons music store. They make an awesome piccolo for $300-$500 that is basically the same as the Di Zhao. They even have a few deals where the piccolo comes free with the purchase of a flute. I have a few friends that love their Kessler piccolo.

    Hi Katie! I love your videos. Can I suggest some things when you’re trying piccolos? I play piccolo quite religiously and is the instrument I get hired to play. Articulation and legato are great. Testing dynamics and harmonics are also great ways to test a piccolo’s ability to play “in-tune”. I’d test the lower and higher ranges in extreme dynamics as well. These were tips given to me by great piccolo players throughout my career.
    I play on a Burkart Global with a wave headjoint and before that I played on a plastic Jupiter. I’ve been playing flute for 22 years and have participated in many groups as well as recordings. Piccolo is my favorite instrument to play. It’s like a sour patch kid: they’re sour then sweet. 😂

      I recommend trying out the school piccolo if you’re just starting to see if you’ll actually like it. And it’s cheaper, bUT if you absolutely fall in love with it you should get your own.

    All three piccolos are more expensive than stundent concert flutes that Katie recommended in another video. Are piccolos really more expensive on average?
    Also, it looked like it was more physically demanding to play the piccolos than a concert flute. Is that really the case or is Katie just not used to them as much? 😀

    • @casseyflinders7445
      @casseyflinders7445 4 роки тому +1

      I often do, especially when I practice by myself. I'm no expert in ear science, but you should, especially if you have sensitive ears. It always hurts the player more than the listeners. A simple ear plug in the right ear is sufficient, or invest in some musician's ear plugs. I've heard wives tales of the piccolo actually making people deaf in that one ear from playing too loudly and not protecting it.

    Which instrument is easier? Piccolo or flute? please tell me! I need to learn one of them!

    • @WorldofIntenseArtie
      @WorldofIntenseArtie 4 роки тому +1

      Navya K. You should learn flute before playing piccolo. You need flute foundation to play piccolo in general. There is no “easier” instrument. All of the instruments have their own crutches and difficulty. Learn flute and establish your playing before moving onto piccolo as a secondary instrument. Any respected piccolo player will tell you the same thing.

    • @casseyflinders7445
      @casseyflinders7445 4 роки тому +1

      When I started picc, I would learn the picc parts on the flute first then played them on picc until I felt comfortable jumping right into my rep with picc. Also, it's important to note that playing picc helps a lot with the flute, and the reverse is true. I found better control of the high range on flute after years of piccolo playing and better intonation overall. You have to practice with a tuner often, especially on octaves on the picc.

    Can you play piccolo without playing the flute? Or do most bands prefer flutes?

    • @grandmasteryoda6378

      The thing about piccolo is that it's not a very versatile instrument. I'm a flute player and in my band we have a piccolo player who's really good but she plays flute a majority of the time. Irs bcs that the piccolo is such a hig pitch instrument that when a piece needs to be quite, they tend to not have a piccolo part. All I'll say is that if you want to learn piccolo, learn flute as well
