definitely would be a bit wiser to introduce new animals to each other slowly in a more controlled way. Much like people introduce new cats by keeping them in separate rooms where they can smell each other but not harm one another and interact through a divider, it's safer to introduce your horse to new animals by having them in separate pens close where they can see but not harm each other.
Glad it turned out okay though

A donkey or mule makes a great pasture mate for horses. Donkeys are also guardian animals. Their honking can signal danger and donkeys hate canines (wolves, coyotes, and dogs) and will attack any of them in their territory.

If you get another horse the best way is to divide the pasture with an electric energiser and white electric tape (visible to the horses), they will get to know each other without fighting for a few weeks. Your horse is a mare and she will likely challenge any newcomer. They can do a lot of damage if the wrong characters are introduced too quickly. It’s taken 10 months to introduce my yearling to the dominant mare at my house, but now they get on well, no injuries.

    • @aurered6387
      @aurered6387 7 місяців тому +2

yeah put electric but leave gap or need be high that they could only sniff each other not touch because if they try attack each other they can go over electric line that happened with my mare and neighbors colt just go trough electric line like there was nothing after they touched each other

You might have led Holiday over to the emus and given her treats to show her the emus make good things happen, at least for a week before introducing them to her pasture.

It would have been sensible, neither have seen anything like each other, and the emus from a small pen, everyone is scared and things go badly with heightened emotional animals. Also don't want the horse to learn this behaviour to new things. Could have been done better.

That was pretty dangerous, horses don't enjoy sudden "roommates". Emus' get along great with goats, chickens and geese. I've never seen them in a field with horses and, I guess, now we know why.

Growing up I lived on a farm and we had all kinds of animals. 2 horses, cows (always 3 or more), goats, chickens, etc. They all shared the same pasture and barn. The chickens did have their own coop with nesting boxes and roosting bars. All of our animals got along fine, however, whenever a new animal was added to the mix it could be a little stressful. We would keep them in the same area but separate (usually just put up a temp fence) so everyone could get to know each other and no one would get hurt. A word of caution - when/if you do decide to get another horse - go very slowly with the introductions. Just putting 2 horses into the same space is VERY scary. They will bite, kick, and pretty much try to kill each other. I've seen it once and I'll never forget that experience - terrifying.

There is an organization in Tennessee called Horse Plus Humane Society that rescues horses at auctions to save them from being sold as meat. The auction group has recently told them they are not allowed at the auctions any longer, probably because they are getting so much flack from people who see the condition of the poor horses at the auctions.
At the last auction they were on the road outside the auction demonstrating and told people if they took the horses to the facility they would buy the horses from them without having to go through auction . They ended up getting/buying for $500. each, 56 horses/ donkeys and a few other animals. They take in other animals as there isn’t anywhere there to take in cats, dogs, pigs, sometimes sheep, others too.
Anyway, the reason I’m telling you about it is you can adopt horses ; donkeys etc. from them at a reasonable price. They take care of the horses, get them vet checked, treat anything they can, give them their shots, test for any illnesses , microchip them, have their feet looked after too.
If the horses are in untreatable health or just too sick to go on they will also assist them to have a peaceful death as a last resort.
I know you plan to get more horses, maybe you could check out the ones they have for adoption, there are some really beautiful horses come through, I love the Mustang and Pinto breeds. They are in different stages of age and training , some very young and some up there, some are retired work horses who just need a place to enjoy the rest of their lives.
Anyway, check them out, they may be too far from you to go but they are also affiliated with a bunch of other rescue facilities all around the US. 🙋🏼‍♀️🥰

It's common horse behavior to challenge new pasture mates and you should be prepared (and speak with more horse people about it!) for the run around any new horse is likely to get when introduced. There's a hierarchy in a horse herd that they like to establish right away, it doesn't mean that they don't get along it just means they want to know who's in charge and the challenges can look violent and sometimes are violent if you try to introduce something like two stallions together. Knowing what to do when introducing horses to each other and which horses are likely to get along quicker is something you should talk over with a more experienced horse owner, like the person who helped you get Holiday, not because you can't figure it out yourselves but because having more knowledge will make the process a lot easier on you and the horses involved.

Holiday reacted like that because she was originally a wild horse so she assumes anything that runs in circles fast like that is a predator circling her like a wild dog a wolf coyotes, so she was acting defensive. You need to show her that they’re just big smelly birds, not a wolf or anything because they are the size of a big dog that would run in a pack and take down a horse or a bear mountain lion, just a suggestion love you guys channel and sharing your beautiful souls with us so thank you so much❤

I hope you’re planning on putting an electric wire on the inside of the board fencing. Cause, livestock fencing is supposed to be on the inside of the post, so the horses or cattle can’t push the boards off and escape. Horses and cattle do a lot of pushing and rubbing on fencing.

Hindsight and all that. Love the fact you show the mistakes also. Not the best introduction. But ended ok in the end. Ive mentioned before that our horses are not huge on Emus and roos wandering through. Some horses will have a meltdown. If they see them in the distance. My one thing is and you both are worried is the coyote thing. You also had a smallish big cat. Rock up. Emus can defend themselves but they really don't have too many predators to deal with naturally. Largely cars and idiots. With them all spreading out like that. A lot of people have mentioned a few fun animal options to help keep predators at bay. Holiday might be a boss mare but the introduction was so territorial based its hard to say how she would react. On the halter she was a lot more relaxed.

Holiday is a great mare, and mustangs especially are usually naturally wary of non-horse animals. Horses are incredible... Also finicky, and complicated 🤣 my late mare would try to kill anything that wasn't horse or human in her stall or pasture- including the potbelly her previous owner let free range, multiple dogs, and any wild geese or deer that decided they wanted to visit... while my gelding loves everyone!

each animal reacts differently - join a flock of ewes together not a problem - join a flock of rams together can be interesting - a herd of cows together with a new herd and they will fight for pecking order for a dayish - put new older bulls in together and O My get out of the road for that one and hope your fences hold up - horses are normally put together after they have meet over a fence for a while, sometimes with a alley way between them so they can't touch because of the fighting for pecking order - you did what you thought was right, no one got hurt - take two tomorrow with another concept so you reach the long term goal of having a group pasture

Hey so I don't comment often I just give your videos a like and come back. I believe the impulse of commenting, advice and critical ppl is becoming an instant impulse. I wonder if there was a time rule like comment in 2 hrs would they return and reply the same way. Anyway I commend you for showing the journey. You say many times we are not sure and will try different things. You were hesitant and you did many great things. No one is injured. Your farm is very organized, projects appear planned and animal housing looks sturdy. Your videos are nicely edited and smoothly recorded. So many wonderful things! I hope you see the positive and remember it is not natural to have access worldwide to a pocket computer to talk to strangers. It's ok to say comments affect our motivation to be transparent or to share our journey. I'm so excited for your aviary. Much love from Canada

Slowly, but I sure hope it works out I think it'll be good for all of them having a big area like that and it'll be good for the socialization of all of them

Can't believe it's been so long and you have grown your farm so much. I joined this channel during the bamboo hatching project in the old farm. Now the farm has grown so much ❤❤❤

Horses have temperaments like angry dogs. You gotta work with them get to know them. And they will chase any threat off. Especially a giant bird.

I’d like to point out that Holiday probably isn’t being defensive and just trying to sort out herd dynamics and make a hierarchy, witch is completely normal in the horse world. Also biting each other even as horsey friends is often just play fighting with each other.

Awesome video, as always! I cringe a bit about how nervous you must have been at the introduction. I'm also a bit jealous of how exciting and fun it must be to keep developing your property!
    Luv to your family!
    Luv to your farm!
Luck to all if your endeavors!

My horse used to chase ANY bird he saw (with me on his back or without). A flock of birds landing in the end of the arena during my lessons caused lots of everyone laughing at the chaos. A single chicken in the horse's paddock looking for leftovers had to run for her life! I can only imagine him with emus!!

As a life long horse owner. You are very lucky no animals got hurt.
Introductions must be slow and safe. As in separate pastures but side by side so they see, smell, and get to know each other first. Horses have a pecking order and mares can be more dominant in some cases.
Many animals do not get along. Horses and pigs are a definite no.
    Very typical horse behavior.
You should've had her halter on and a lead rope. That could've ended very badly.
You have a beautiful horse barn.

I think the horse was just trying to smell the emu, they do that with their mouths, and I bet the horse is curious about the feathers. Still quite a stressful situation all around. I think the horse would be surprised if the emu needed to retaliate. Kapow

Fantastic!!! I hope they'll adapt well with each other. When you put the 2 emu's in the first time, I was concerned when Holiday was ready to bite. Now all looks calm, got my fingers crossed all goes well.
I love watching your kids play together. You've raised amazing kids.
