Just wanted to finally thank you for your motivating videos. My garden here in the Green Swamp (Groveland, Florida) was nearly destroyed in the last hurricane. Every plant was either uprooted, flooded or basically shredded by the wind. Got so depressed I decided to just ignore it & turn over the beds in spring.
After watching your videos, I found myself sucked back into saving my garden! Proud to say I was able to save 32 Floridade tomato plants, 30 snap peas, 9 peppers, 3 Everglades tomatoes, 50+ Korean radishes, 6 Seabreeze strawberries, Danvers Carrots, Detroit red beets, a cucamelon, 40+ bananas, 50+ pineapples & lots of lettuce. (Our mango & papaya trees didn't mind the hurricane at all.) Like you said, I kept trying to see what happens & the plants that survived thrived! At the end of the day, I saved almost half my garden😊
    Thank you so very much

Such a great honest and encouraging video. Shootout to Walmart that saved me last year with GREAT celery starts.
Also, this tip from Living Traditions saved me. FREEZE your tomatoes until you're ready to make sauce or paste. Let them build up until life slows down. Great tip on the green onions too.

I am in South Florida. I put up several strings of LED patio lights above my garden. And several solar lights in my garden beds.
In the summer, I do a bunch of gardening between 6PM and 9PM. It is so much more tolerable!

You can regrow any onion to get green onions. They may not make a large bulb again but they make green onions. Sometimes they remake a 1 inch bulb which is nice but usually they just make green tops.

my poor neighbors, I offload my harvests on them all the time 😅 I keep giving one neighbor fruit trees because I started them or bought them and now don't have the space. I'm going to start tomatoes and other plants and give them to them too, I don't know if they even want them. I figure someone will 😂

I just wanted to say how grateful I am for your videos! This coming year is my first time starting my own garden, and I’m really excited to try out all the different methods you’ve shared. I'm in Zone 10b, so your tips have been super helpful for figuring out what will actually work. It’s so refreshing to watch someone so passionate and knowledgeable about gardening, and your energy really comes through in each video. Thank you for putting in all the effort - your content has been a huge inspiration for me!

I'm listening to your video while doing some internet surfing. I heard you start talking about your struggles with spinach. I wanted to recommend that you try purslane (Portulaca oleracea). It literally grew as a weed in my garden and readily reseeds. Then I researched it and found out that it's highly nutritious. My kids call it the snacking weed and will munch it while they are in the yard playing. I use it any time I would use a leafy green in salads, soups, stir fries, etc. I'm in Texas in 8b/9a.

The hurricane was a real reason my tomatoes did not do well at all. I did leave them and I’m getting a few 3 or 4 at a time. Really sad about that. Big flood in my yard. But I have started a winter crop. So far going good hope the weather holds. This last weeks of cold weather makes me worried. Glad to see you have been dealing with all our problems.

In Central FL here. I've given up on summer gardening for the most part. Last time I tried it was beans that I had luck with. It's best just to solarize or cover crop in the summer here and get inside projects done instead. That way when winter rolls around you have more time to garden.

Thanks to my mom for that advice 😅

I grew sweet potatoes in bins bought from dollar general. Worked great! They didn't vine all over the garden. I also grew loofah on a trellis and started it way early so to avoid the squash bugs. They were just beginning to come out when I harvested. I found changing the timing to plant squash type vegetables helped avoid those nasty bugs.

I started some Catalina baby spinach from Renee’s garden and it is doing pretty good so far Ive started to secession sow for what little time of cold we have. I got my seeds started in a 5 inch pot I made 6 shallow holes just deep enough to cover the seeds and directly sowed 2 seeds in each. After that I watered overhead with a spray bottle every other day and they popped up in about 3-7 days (all at varying times)

I always love your videos being a Central Florida gardner. This past year I've tried to simplify and while not having the pounds of vegetables I've had a good turn out with Everglades tomatoes and Seminole Pumpkin. The one other surprise for me has been longevity Spinach. I've kept it a little more shaded than usual with the heat and its gone fantastic! We've been able to continously harvest fresh spinach and propagate into even more plants as we've gone. Definitely a great variety to try.

You’re quickly becoming my new favorite channel. I follow many gardeners, but because I also live in zone 9b in Central Florida, I find your videos more relevant to my needs. 100% agree with “only grow what you’ll actually eat.” Last year I went way overboard with the carrots myself. This year, I planted far too many sweet potato slips (was able to give my coworkers several harvested sweet potatoes as early Xmas gifts lol). I don’t have much luck with tomatoes (tomato hornworms and blight are my issues), but I am really going to focus on just two varieties this year 😊

My 3 best summer crops here in NC FL were black eyed peas, sweet potato and peppers, sweet and hot. Right now the best winter crops are broccoli rabe/broccolini, radishes, lettuce, herbs and tomatoes. I can't seem to grow squash for nothing, spring, summer, fall or winter. Had some fall seminole pumpkin and Tromboncino Rapicante going good, till the hard freezes came. The little fruits fell right off. (Hubby covered them w/a plastic tarp, which is a no-no.) The plants look terrible, but are still alive, so I'll leave them and hope they bounce back. Thanks for all the tips and yes, we have to be kind to ourselves. 💚

I don’t like being in the garden during summer either so what I do is I plant sweet potatoes in May and let it grow during all summer or cover my garden beds with several layers of cardboard until I am ready to plant again in fall. This year I had an abundance of sweet potatoes and carrots. I planted so many carrots and didn’t thin them. The good thing with sweet potatoes and carrots is that they can be stored unlike tomatoes and other crops.

It does work well and even though I have raised beds I feel more successful in my potted plants most of the time. Especially when it comes to peppers and tomatoes ,for some reason I just can’t keep them happy in the raised beds… I dk but okra, roselle, cowpeas collards, turnips, and large red mustard greens do great in my garden beds. Basil dies in the garden bed but does great in pots for me. Pots are a much more manageable in my opinion!

I don’t have land cleared full of cut down trees. I grow in plastic dollar store totes, containers, and tower planters. I use to follow seed packets directions plant spacing. However I found it to waste tons of growing space. I now plant intensively. 1 Tote is little over one square foot more like one and a half ft.² I have a sage, plant, thyme, oregano, parsley, cilantro, six lettuce plants, dill chives I found I can grow tons of food in smaller spaces without needing raised beds and when they break, I go get a new one not real expensive, not to mention there’s not much soil that you waste like you do raise beds something to think about and so if you rent, you can pick them up and move them with you

Im in South Western Volusia. This Summer was a let down. I'm at work watching the radar thinking how lush the garden will be knowing the work will be hard but fruitful. Except my house was in a rain black hole. Even when it rained at neighbors house, not mine. The only thing to survive was my Seminole pumpkin vine with 1 pumpkin harvested and 4-5 currently still green today, sweet potatoes that just cant be killed(daughters sweet potato pie is delicious), and 1 papaya hanging on the stalk. Life (and discouragment) has also kept me from working on the garden this Autumn. But, as you said, its never too late to start in Florida. Time to get the garden going again.

Please don’t give up. I have gotten much better since I started growing in containers. Get some cheap 5 gallon grow bags. Then you can move them around to see where things grow best. Start with just a couple things, like peppers and tomatoes. Then what I do is plant 4 of everything I want to grow. Then I put the grow bags on each side of the house to see where they grow the best. I’ve learned the best spots to plant in my yard by doing this.
