    The brand new Kenya Experience series will document a week in Kenya training at altitude and meeting some of the best runners in the World. Make sure to subscribe as new videos will be dropping every few days. This seventh video (and Day 8 of my trip) documents an easy Wednesday in Iten and documents an interview with elite local runner Emmanuel Kipruto as we run our second run of the day.
    Please consider looking at the Gathimba Edwards Foundation that do amazing work in the area and if you can afford a small donation it would be very much appreciated gathimbaedwardsfoundation.org/
    I was gifted the opportunity to travel with the Kenya Experience camp. All views are my own and I have not been paid to make these videos. We wanted it to be organic so I will tell the story of my time in Kenya in my usual style. If you are interested in finding out more on the camps that happen a few times a year then
    Check out www.runningtrips.co.uk/ to find out more about the camps they offer.

    Matt this is outstanding and loved every minute. Iv loved these videos and it's sad to see them end. That learned me a lot. He's a right happy chap and lives for his running. He's right about our lifestyle we work to hard and don't have enough time to focus more on our running. There is just one thing I would like to know. If he doesn't work how does he live?

    • @TheWelshRunner
      @TheWelshRunner  2 роки тому +9

      Thanks Paul. Theres one more normal episode left and a Q and A which is long so will have to be split into a few episodes. I'm really glad you have enjoyed the videos.
      It's a great question. So the elite runners are supported by their family. The cost of living is low so the risk/reward of supporting a talented runner in your family is worth it. Runners will move to Iten to train and their family will support them. They will live cheaply and train like an elite. If they make it then it was all worth it. It's not really a path that most Westerners could take unless they were from very wealthy families. Or I guess they could send their talented children to Iten too.

      @@TheWelshRunner Hi there! First, congratulations for your series! Such an amazing thing to see how much us, amateurs, can learn from kenyan runners lifestyle. Of course, making the necessary adaptations for our way of living.
      But, beign from Brazil, a place where there are a lot of talented children, but with lack of the necessary support to reach their full potential, mainly because of the high cost of living, there was something in this comment of yours that called my attention.
      There is a recent case of a brazilian athlete which did exactly what you said. He left Brazil and went living in Kenya, because of all the benefits, including the low cost of life. His name is Daniel Nascimento (or Danielzinho) and his first marathon, after training for a reasonable period in Kenyan, was a 2:09 and recently he accomplished a 2:06.
      Personally, I really doubt that he could have acchieved that if he had stood in Brazil. The runners way of the kenyan people really seams a unic key for making potential running talent shine!

    Hi Matt - loved your series on Kenya as it brought back some great memories for me. My amazing family clubbed together and sent me out there for two weeks (2019) for my 70th birthday. I recognized many of the trails you ran on including the forest run and the killer fartlek. If you are still in touch with Hugo, please say "Hello" from me......finally, we may bump into each other in Rotterdam 2022! Best of luck with the rest of your training - I am sure you will do well!

    Really enjoyed this series of videos Matt. I’m a new subscriber to your channel and have watched all your back catalogue of videos over the last couple of weeks and really enjoyed them and seeing your journey. I have been running for the last 12 years but generally only as a excuse to get outside and keep fit. For the majority of the covid pandemic I have simply ran the same route at the same pace without much progression. I rarely race and when I do i am often not very ambitious. Your vlogs have inspired me to push myself and add variety to my running and training, set targets and ambitions and focus on some races over the next year or so. I feel re-energised and enthusiastic about my running rather than seeing it merely as a process or daily routine. I know I am never going to be ‘quick’ but I want to look back and think that I made the best of what i had (and make my kids proud!). Keep up the great work mate - you are an inspiration 👍

They seem to train all year long the same, way, is milage regular all year long 180km? And this made me think about progression ? How do they improve ? Change group ? groups by levels ?

    • @TheWelshRunner
      @TheWelshRunner  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the question Dan. The answers to your questions lies in vlog Day 4 - Long Run from about 7:30 in. However in short they treat the long run as a session for the week. They run it steady. They are working and don’t just run it easy. Early in a training block they will run it hilly and then as they move closer to their goal race they will try to run faster, flatter routes.

    • @killerdan5485
      @killerdan5485 2 роки тому +1

      @@TheWelshRunner Thanks Matt, but what does steady mean for them? Between Easy and marathon pace?

    • @TheWelshRunner
      @TheWelshRunner  2 роки тому

      @@killerdan5485 so steady is an effort. So they are at altitude and running over hills so a pace doesn’t really mean much. They are running near aerobic threshold which is upper zone 2. They won’t be running as fast as marathon pace or effort. Marathon pace is a different effort level depending how long a marathon takes. So for a two hour and four hour marathon runner the intensities are different. So for them they are running slower than MP but still working. So yeah between easy and marathon effort. For a slower marathon runner it would be marathon effort. If that makes sense?
