Anyone watching this video, please tape over the exposed EPS before you apply the clear coat. The chemicals in the clear coat will cause a reaction with the EPS that weakens its structure. On an EPS that isn't as dense as the helmet foam you can often see it start melting. On a helmet you may not see anything visible, but it will affect the impact protection of your lid should you need it. Other than that paint away! Cheers!
The amount of enthusiasm that goes into anything that Dustin does is overwhelming :-D
This would be the optimal application for the flowers !!!! 🌻flower power 🌻

Great vid! Late to the shows tonight!🙈🙈🏁🏁🏁
Wow! Very clever, very well done, it looks GREAT! Great idea on using a program like Photoshop to simulate and generate ideas. Thanks!
Awesome video and beautiful painting! Very funny man lol. We love supporting fellow art channels! Best of luck in 2021, love from Canada
So well done, simple and the result looks awesome! Thanks for posting, I will plan a similar project soon.
Awesome, thank you!
Ayyyy helmet looks great, nice job! Painting on curved surfaces was way harder than I expected when did mine, and your pattern is way more complex!! Killed it & thanks for the vid I picked up a few tips cheers ! 🤗
I already like this one.
I need a new helmet for when I'm able to ride again. Thank you for the inspiration.
I think you made it look real easy. Being a noob painter, I'd try it on my OLD helmet as a way to relieve the pressure/performance anxiety....... maybe a stencil?
Try getting a friend / partner to wear the helmet while you apply clearcoat, to save the hassle of masking with paper...
I'm always nervous using brushes, but have found KRINK markers work pretty darn well for some simple designs. One day I will conquer the brush!!
love the elenore rigby
Any issues with the clear coat getting on the foam? I remember etoe was masking the foam and used a special primer to prevent it from being compromised. Any insight? Thanks.
You are 100% right to question this. The solvent in varnish should be checked to make sure that is compatible with the outer shell and won't cause damage resulting in micro-cracks in the shell. Plus, the foam is almost guaranteed to have been damaged by the solvents in the varnish. Whether this varnish was enough to compromise the integrity of the helmet foam, the bit that dissipates a lot of energy in a crash to save your head, is a matter for concern.
AWESOME dUstin . thanks for the great tutorial , on my way to the hardware store right now
Sanding the helmet, while providing tooth for the paint, introduces weaknesses into the polycarbonate shell, This is then followed by using a solvent-based varnish, without talking about checking if it is compatible with polycarbonate (if it isn't, it will eat into the polycarbonate, introducing micro-cracks into the helmet's shell making it more likely to fail in the event of a crash). He then specifically states to not worry too much about taping off the helmet, even though the part of the helmet most vulnerable to the solvent-based varnish is the foam which will be slowly eaten away over time and this is the part designated to maximally dissipate collision energy in the event of a fall. Fabulous. A helmet that is guaranteed to absolutely fail warranty (a correctly painted helmet, painted to the manufacturer's advice, will not fail warranty - see various helmets in the pro peleton, especially Sagan, the Red Bull sponsored riders, etc.) and the foam will possibly be so compromised as to not do its job in the event of a fall.
Great stuff. Will try to do something. Keep up the great videos!
I can already see myself putting in hours to customize my helmet, just to go for my first ride and have an accident within the first 100 meters that totals the thing. That's usually how it goes for me and passion projects. :D
I feel you sooooooo much!
Really good job player.
Looks fun can't wait to try this. I customized my shoes after a little ebd inspiration and of course had to [logo delete]
Makes my life much easier.
❤️
Love how you didn't seem to care that sanding the helmet, while providing tooth for the paint, introduces weaknesses into the polycarbonate shell, and then you follow that by using a solvent-based varnish, without talking about checking if it is compatible with polycarbonate (if it isn't, it will eat into the polycarbonate, introducing micro-cracks into the helmet's shell making it more likely to fail in the event of a crash) and you specifically stated to not worry too much about taping off the helmet, even though the part of the helmet most vulnerable to the solvent-based varnish is the foam which will be slowly eaten away over time and this is the part designated to maximally dissipate collision energy in the event of a fall. Fabulous. A helmet that is guaranteed to absolutely fail warranty (a correctly painted helmet will not fail warranty - see various helmets in the pro peleton, especially Sagan the Red Bull riders, etc.) and the foam will possibly be so compromised as to not do its job in the event of a fall.
Im a Loner Dotty A Rebel
when sanding a helmet to prep for new paint your sanding like it owes you money . lol it's just to take the sheen off no pressure just a quick light back and forth with 220 or 320 grit seriously NO DOWNWARD PRESSURE.. If a light scuff with sand paper weakens the helmet then that helmet will show you it has WAY worse problem in the foreseeable future my friend
Hey Dustin, have you done research into the effects of the clearcoat on the protective helmet foam? just wondering if those chemicals can have any effect on the structural integrity of the helmet. I know that for carbon fiber at least, choice of which clearcoat you use can effect the strength of the fiber.
Was coming to ask this too, would think that you’d probably want to mask the foam for the clearcoat step
You need a special type of clear coat to do this. I’m surprised the foam on his helmet didn’t start to melt...
Not just carbon fibre, but polycarbonate can have micro-cracks introduced into it by the solvent if it isn't compatible and the foam, which he specifically said to not bother taping to cover, is super-easy to damage with solvent-based spray paints, resulting in the part that most dissipates energy in a crash, potentially failing. The damage to the foam can actually increase over time after being sprayed over.
1:18 I need that slow bunny sticker!!!!
5:40 warm but, you know, not HOT. Hot aerosol = BOOM
You oughta be proud that I'm getting good marksssss
might wanna mention that a individual should wear some rubber gloves due to the oils of a person's skin will get onto the item being painted.. wiping off all the sanding dust to perfection means Zero when your leaving oily finger prints to potentially give you problems with the paint adherence and/or how it lays down and cures . I just didn't hear you mention anything about that subject
Me thinks a UV resistant clear coat could go a little ways to protecting the helmet from the sun which slowly degrades the styrofoam... so replace your helmet every 3.5 years instead of 3 (says the guy who rocks a 6 year old aero helmet covered in plastic gems)
Do you ever use 1shot enamel? It’s great for little projects like this.
Very cool.... So what happens when we all copy your commotion design do you get a copyright sticker 🤣
How important is the sanding step? Would it be wrong to skip that step?
sanding helps the paint stick. If you don't sand, there's a high chance that the paint will flake off eventually maybe that's an effect you want but if it's not, I would sand it.
Wow that looks good, how long did it take.
Not sure I'd trust this in a crash. Solvents are bad for helmets. Looks cool though!
Been wanting to paint my helmet since I got it. It's so plain... and white... I'm more of a doodler and was thinking about using paint pens. Any thoughts?!
I feel a "Nailed it!" moment coming when I attempt customise my helmet.
Any advice for us doodlers who are really only good with a pen?
there are touch-up pens you can use
smooth operater
i guess my idea of sending it to you to paint is uh... passe'
Will the paint ruin polycarbonate Giro Aries Spherical Bike helmet’s safety??
I researched my question for answers and information: the answer is YES. The paint has to be compatible with not only the bike helmet shell but the helmet foam. I will contact Giro, the manufacturer for their advice before I do anything.
best of luck
i would avoid applying varnish on that foam layer. It could weaken an also, there is no paint to seal there.
Why is there so much motion blur in the video?
Strange Newspaper you have over there...
IT IS VERY COUMPHY
LOL
Two Thin Coats
Only $100
Think of the heroin you could get for that. Might be the next video.
Kinda looks like a black watermelon?
i wish you would have warned me about warming my clear coat in the microwave...
