That is the most badass punk thing to do. I mean being on the insultant would have been huge for Dylan back then He would eventually hit that height but it would have brought it sooner but he didn't care. He wanted to play his song and if he couldn't then he was just going to walk away and go home. How many artists would have the strength to do that to give up that one moment truly not caring. Bob Dylan had that spirit of punk and when he went rock and roll it was authentic People heard it in him like they heard the authenticness of his folk music and they moved with him
Even though my favourite bands were The Clash, Talking Heads , The Jam (as a three man group, best show I've attended),you don't need a punk ethos to possess a moral compass. .
Moments before showtime - change the song he'd painstakingly rehearsed? Wing it with a folk standard instead? A lesser man might have acquiesced, but Dylan just walked away. Love him.
That was Sullivan's MO. Wait until your in the dressing room then send someone in at the last minute and demand that a line in the song get scrapped or the song altogether. They did it to the Doors, the Stones and a few others. I guess they figured, by the time your ready to go on you won't back out and they were right for the most part until Dylan came along, good for you Bob
Well, Yes, and Jim Morrison of The Doors just said "Sure, I'll change the line" until they performed and he sang it the way they wrote it... F-You Ed Sullivan. Ed Sullivan was Irate and Scolded the group with "You'll NEVER play The Ed Sullivan Show AGAIN!!!" Jim Morrison answered... "We JUST Played The Ed Sullivan Show..."
didn't ed sullivan make the stones change the words to let's spend the night together or not go on they chose to go on dylan didn't i don't know who ed sullivan thought he was

Totally agree with Dylan's response.

I never knew Dylan bailed on the Ed Sullivan Show. I guess things turned out alright for him in the end.
Actually, this is the most articulate I've heard Dylan
Then you haven't listened much.
Great channel 👍👍
doesn't sound like Dylan in the first part, but then it does near middle/end

Dylan did this in 1963, before the Stones and Morrison incidents of 1966 and 1967.
@Themaddprof They also censored Elvis at the last minute, that was before Dylan.

Best career move ever and so ahead of his time. I'm surprised he didn't give the Stones and the Doors an FYI before they went on.

That's Robert Zimmerman here not Bob Dylan. He's like 75% outta character. But also the tape speed might have been slowed a bit.
Or was it sped up?

This is an uninformed comment. Perhaps you're in favor of censoring artists AFTER inviting them to perform.
Most people aren't.
@@dldwiggins The government didn't censor him. Ed Sullivan directed him.
