Who'd have thought Steve Howe and Brian May could jam so well. 2 guys with completely different styles but 2 guys that epitomize style. Great song overall. A little bit of Kashmir in there too I think.

I was thinking the same thing about the "Kashmir" nod!!
And, gotta admit that, not being a "die-hard" Queen fan (like I am for Yes), I did not know that Steve played on this song!
I AM a fan of Queen, though.....don't get me wrong. Just not a FANATIC, as I am for Yes and other bands.

Queen has a wide range of musical influences, from opera to metal, so it's no surprise that "Innuedo" goes to many places. And it works. It's a great opener for what would be Freddie Mercury's final full release with Queen.

  • @jaybird4093

Freddie's voice gives me chills throughout this entire album. Freddie was able to keep his battle with AIDS a secret before this album but it became impossible to hide. Before the recording sessions he confided with the band that he only had a few months left to live and wanted to record as much music as possible. There were times during the recording sessions when Freddie was so weak that he would prop himself up, sing for a few minutes at a time, and then collapse. It was unspoken, but the members of the band felt that the “Innuendo” title of the album was a reference to Freddie's acceptance of his eventual death. Many of the lyrics of the songs hint toward that.
As far as the music on the album, I would rate it a 3 out of 5, Freddie's voice puts the album at an overall 4 for me. “The Show Must Go On” is an incredible song. It's pretty straight-forward so structurally it's not too interesting. Two other songs I like are “All God's People” which has a fantastic chord progression and vocal harmonies. It's all over the place musically and it's influenced by gospel and straight-up blues. I also like “Don't Try So Hard” which is a vocal-centered piece. The flexibility in Freddie's voice along the control of his vocal registers and timbres mixed with the fact that he was terminally ill make it mind-blowing for me. It has lot of emotional ups and downs musically.

    • @tomfabozzi5353
      @tomfabozzi5353 4 роки тому +1

Apparently when they were recording “Show Must Go On”, Freddie was apparently so weak that Brian May tried to get him to stop. He said “I’m fucking doing it, Darling”, took a shot of vodka, and nailed it (including that goose pimple raising A5 note) in one take. As you say, he knew he wasn’t coming back. And he wasn’t going to leave anything he had left behind.

Great reaction! Love the analysis! Queen does have some metal influences and a few metal songs. They are more known for their big hits, but they do have a variety of different songs. They actually produced some of the first power metal before Rainbow, with songs such as Ogre Battle live ua-cam.com/video/551gRH3dGEE/v-deo.html or The Great King Rat ua-cam.com/video/nNDOazfRg08/v-deo.html, they are credited with creating the first first thrash metal song Stone Cold Crazy live ua-cam.com/video/T8Rfb1Jtmic/v-deo.html, Metallica has covered this song. Rob Halford was and still is a massive fan of Freddie Mercury, he used some of Freddie's vocal style. There are some other great progressive songs from Queen such as Liar live in London 1977 ua-cam.com/video/cJvO2kuZ5ts/v-deo.html or The Prophet Song ua-cam.com/video/HzdjMLKKdgk/v-deo.html. Some of these are live performances, because Queen are often just better live then in the studio.
The song Innuendo was actually a no.1 hit in the UK. It is just a great song, and Steve Howe also did a great job. This song is very difficult to sing, Queensryche did a cover version of this song, Geoff Tate is great singer, but he couldn't do it justice. Freddie's singing on Queen last album is absolutely some of the best.

  • @brianorr2050

He was dying, they all knew it...that is part of it...but it is Queen as well. There is a passage at the end of the solo that sounds like it could have been on Queen I (their first album)...but then it is the "you can be anything you want to be" section right after. Blending the old with the new. The beginning with the end.
You need to do "Millionaire Waltz". It is a waltz for sure (signature 3/4 time), but it is also classical at times, and like a German drinking song too. Just wonderful.

Really love this song, a top Queen song for sure. You should also check out the song The Show Must Go On from Innuendo. The last song from the last Queen album before Freddie passed away. He's basically telling everyone that he's dying. Very emotional. Bonus points: Brian May also guested with another Prog Guitar Icon Steve Hackett on the song Cassandra.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 роки тому +2

The Show Must Go On is meant as somewhat of a farewell song. But it is not the last song Freddie recorded, the last song he recorded was Mother Love ua-cam.com/video/-MoGU3VNkJI/v-deo.html. It is from the Made In Heaven album. Freddie never finished the song, Brian May had to sing the last verses. The story goes that while Freddie was recording the song, he suddenly told everyone that he was very tired, and that he will come back and finish the song later. Unfortunately, he never came back. I think The Show Must Go On is like farewell song from the band towards Freddie. Freddie's own Farewell song that he wrote, can be found on The Miracle album from 1989, basically his doctors didn't think he would live past 1989, therefore he included the song on The Miracle album, Was It All Worth It ua-cam.com/video/sEhYFnwTciQ/v-deo.html.

When Innuendo was released, like you, I pretty much only knew their 'hits' - but this track absolutely floored me, and set in motion my eventual complete collection of everything Queen ever did! This song, for me, was the culmination of several tracks (or styles) that Queen excelled at.
First was the dark heaviness, as heard on early period tracks like Ogre Battle, The March Of The Black Queen, Son and Daughter.
Next was the progressive 'metal' (as you mentioned, and you're right), that could be heard on their extremely heavy, progressive track The Prophet's Song (from A Night At The Opera, same as Bohemian Rhapsody), and It's Late (from News Of The World)
The operatic style, of course was like Bohemian Rhapsody (& others), and the whimsical, almost ballad like middle-8 interlude, could find comparison with too many of their past songs to mention. I HIGHLY recommend checking out all of the songs I've mentioned here (and so much more) - you will not be disappointed!
The addition of Steve Howe on his Flamenco, Spanish guitar section was icing on the cake!! Initially, I didn't know much about Yes, so didn't get the significance of his 'guesting' on the track, but as I got more into prog bands like Yes & Floyd, his contribution became all the greater!
Of course, the lyrical message is pretty universal. It's dark, but there's rays of light and hope there - pretty much sums up humanity.
This song was the complete package, and soon became my defacto #1 Queen song! Glad you enjoyed!

You forgot "You can join me on Zipper" ...
Well, re the song/album I recall a feeling that I often experience when it's about the good old times of prog. As mentioned several times here it was usual to listen to an album as a whole (especially in the vinyl era) rather than to the songs seperately. Certainly the songs "work" on their own, but when listening to the whole album you can feel the thread running through the performance. "Innuendo" can be seen as the opening and "The Show must go on" the closing episodes of this Varieté (as the album cover also suggests). What a great album - especially when you realise that it was Freddie's last work

To be clear, it's both Brian and Steve on the acoustic part. Brian's rhythm part, and Steve's lead, which was added later.

Steve had been friends with these guys since the 70's. Queen were nearby when Going for the One was recorded in Switzerland.

Even though I consider myself a fan of Queen, I had never heard this song before. The story behind how Steve Howe got involved is very interesting and I really enjoy the song. It's sad that this was among the last songs that Freddie did before he died. Such a loss.

Nine months after this album Freddy Mercury died of Aids. He was gravely sick during the whole recording. His voice by then was not as strong but still powefull. R.I.P.

That opening and those first Oohoo Oohoo are Freddie's tip of the hat to Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant I guess. No surprise then that Robert sang this song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert with Queen.
Pretty sure if it is not actually Howe when you said it. I think it is the flamenco style guitar solo that is Howe, not the acoustic part preceding, that could easily be Brian May.

I've never been a Queen follower, but I appreciate those who appreciate them. They fall into an odd rock category that sometimes feels like rock operetta or Broadway musical. I saw a stage of actors and a Spanish setting and dramatic lighting as the tenor belts out his aria listening to this. There's nothing exceedingly original about their compositions, like say U.K., but the presentation of it is wholly energized, Freddie Mercury sounding seriously expressive with lightning bolt power.
By the way, I'm starting a prog rock band called Broken Zipper. We're really going to open things up musically.

People do often link Queen with broadway or theater. But in truth no one in the band was a fan of theater. Freddie Mercury often had offers for theater productions. He always turned them down because he hated the idea of doing the same thing over and over again. He was a fan opera, but for the same reasons it was never really a direction he would go in. When sang some duets with a real opera soprano he wrote all of the music. There is a lot of interesting details in Queen's songwriting, especially in Freddie Mercury's songwriting, he was an excellent composer. See this example of a song that appears very simple:
      ua-cam.com/video/sUuB7zs4ej4/v-deo.html
But we all like different things, a lot of rock fans tend to like more blues with their rock then classical or jazz cords. Of course these days Queen is actually touring around with a real musical theater singer. It is extremely underwhelming when they attempt to do any rock songs these days.

First off, I too had a similar problem at work with the zip zip. Only my accident happened a little before lunch. I decided to take a slightly longer lunch and drive home. Which I did, hiding myself in the same fashion as you, with a bag. Good times... you should do another song from Sticky Fingers, get it? Zipper... crickets...
oh, and bless ya squared. Nice elbow form.
    Almost forgot the song...
I could hear a more current production and muscular yes, metally guitar tone by Brian. This was the first I’d heard of Steve’s contribution to this song so it made my day for sure. Miss the Freddy.
Your reaction analysis made love this song even more. Good job.
Take extra care everyone, mask up for you and your loved peeps.

Another collaboration was Brian May and Friends: Star Fleet Project (with Eddie Van Halen), which was basically a recorded jam session based on May being in L.A. and wanting to record a heavy version of a British TV show - so he phoned a few people up. One highlight was the 13 min. blues jam "Bluesbreaker", which was inspired by and dedicated to Eric Clapton's playing with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. How about keeping a couple of emergency safety pins at work.

And just a suggestion for something different. How about Talk Talk "I Believe In You". And you've already done some Opeth, so maybe some Katatonia. Though a little mellow, I think my favorite song by them is "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here".

Queen got pretty heavy. Freddie was apparently not fond of Gimme the Prize, which probably shredded his voice. Then there's The Hitman, Ogre Battle, Great King Rat, Sheer Heart Attack (more punk than metal), White Man, and, of course, Stone Cold Crazy, as examples.
