When you form a hypothesis you are not supposed to have a preconceived or prejuduced opinion, or presumption of any kind. I absolutely love you guys, but this was dead wrong. As an apology to Thomas Blug, you should invite him there to give an in depth assessment of the Iridium. Well, I was watching the video and the comments, and didn’t want to get in the discussion - Just to see how things go...
    Anyway I would be ready for a blind test AMP1 vs any amps of Lee‘s and Rob‘s choice. I would only do the settings on the AMP1 (since I know it) and they would play and tell what they hear and which amp they are playing. That would give us unbiased information about sonic qualities...;-)

    Sorry guys, this felt under prepared and the units pre-judged. The amp 1 is a legit 100w amp with killer tones. I reckon Thomas Blug would be pretty disappointed in this. For anyone wondering, check out some of the demos from Thomas himself. Now that guy knows how to dial in an amp and man can he play too

  • @CEB7832
    @CEB7832 4 роки тому +85

    I'm a big fan of your videos and reviews. That said, I found this one really disappointing. Was it perhaps a bit rushed out? Instead of spending 20 minutes on "I don't really like these and don't see the point of them", perhaps it would have been worth doing a review from the point of view of: "here's what these can do". I think the point of these amps (and perhaps, as you aptly mentioned, this is even more true for the simple amp head than for the floor versions?) is that they can do a lot of things very well. Many have praised the H&K's clean channel. It can emulate classic crunch, make a convincing impression of an AC/DC sound, do really well with 90s metal (Metallica, Megadeth, etc.) and crush it in modern metal land. A review focused on demonstrating these possibilities would have convincingly shown the point of these products, as opposed to merely validating the first-degree hypothesis that given their price and size, they have no point and people are better served elsewhere. Just a thought.

    • @danielbarth
      @danielbarth 4 роки тому +3

      @bauchbart 4 роки тому

      @@danielbarth Except it totally is ;-) H&K would not have gone out of their way to get modern metal players like John Browne of Monuments to be part of their advertising campaign if it wasn't aimed at metal players.

    • @danielbarth
      @danielbarth 4 роки тому +2

      @@bauchbart I'm not saying it is not also advertised to metal players, but a lot of demos, even official ones by H&K, show the breadth of the amp and do not focus on hi-gain and metal. Unlike the Iridium version of the Amp1, which is specifically marketed as the hi-gain/metal variation of the Amp1. The Black Spirit 200 is as much a hi-gain amp as the Boss Katana, since that one also has four electric guitar channels (clean, crunch, lead, brown/ultra).
      If you can't make good use of the Black Spirit, it certainly isn't because you're not a metal player...

    As a guitarist that is constantly flying to gigs, these type of "amps"/processors have become vital to me. The smaller and (especially) lighter the better. The closer they get to sounding authentic to a real amp the better. Another major factor is that many countries are introducing "noise limits" in their pubs/club's. Some venues are not even allowing guitar amplifiers to be used on stage. So again, these products are totally essential for some of us.

      The Amp1 product is fabulous. The gentlemen did not seem to fully embrace either product and understand & tweak the controls. There are many videos out there that cover the products very well which seem much better in the sound that was achieved. For example, the cleaner sounds on Amp1 with the boost engaged are the way to go. Watch the JayLeonardJay videos on the H&K. A small cabinet like the Matrix Neo series, BlugGuitar Nano, or Barefaced pair perfectly with these amps. Walking into the gig with all your gig in one trip is amazing. My band mates were jealous. :)

    Sorry folks, but the sounds you got out of the Iridium do NOT do it justice (for whatever reason). I use the Amp1 Mercury and it has replaced my tube amps (Fender HotRod, Egnater Rebel and Hughes&Kettner Tubemeister). It's not just about weight, it's also about having 4 sound at your feet (with an additional stereo footswitch) and every sound boostable. The sounds individually might (!) be a bit inferior to a good tube amp but I do not have a tube amp that can do clean, crunch, heavy and lead equally well up to the level the Amp1 can do.

    In all fairness, one could easily argue that the Grandmeister 40 Deluxe is tonally still H&K's best portable amp offering. I've owned the Grandmeister 40 Deluxe and now currently the BS200 Floor. The BS200 Floor seems more road sturdy and also versatile with incorporating my other effect pedals into it. Tonally, I'm not sure the BS200 Floor quite matches the warmth and power of the all-tube GM 40 Deluxe~ I'm still dialing things in. This said, when you have the BS200 Floor cranked up in a live gig, especially through a quality cabinet, then "all is right with the world" ~sounds absolutely amazing! 🎸🔊 🌋

One board (pedaldeck) with all my pedals and amp, using the venues cab, so all the controls right in front of me and loads of volume. It sounds great to me, although it is the original version that I picked up used for £325.... I've seen many reviews about this thing and i can't recall there's a single guitarist who was capable of getting a real convincing tube sound out of it! It sounds thin and over the top etc...
    I own and play a H&K Statesman EL34 head (guess who designed it?..TB!) which blows this BS200 of the stage...easily! The Amp1 is almost as good as the Statesman;)

    The video left me with a bad aftertaste. Rabea demoed the Black Spirit 200 Head, got very good tones out of it, and only a small part was metal. Because the BS200 is not aimed at Metal players. He just learned about the product beforehand and knew how to use it.
    It sounds harsh, but it seems to me that there is a lot of bias going on. Andertons also did a demo of H&K tube amps and it was, by all accounts, done in a half-assed way as well. Don't get me wrong please. Whether you like H&K as a company, the BS200 or the Amp1 is highly subjective anyway, but they all are quite successful and respected, at least in Europe. And yet, whenever these two touch the stuff it leads to underwhelming experiences. Which they know, hence the preface at the beginning of the video. But the target audience ("metal players") only works as an excuse for this particular version of the Amp1, not for the regular Mercury Edition or the Black Spirit...

    Ok, my answer:
    ... i can see the advantage of these devices. Sometimes i visit friends by train and being able to just take 1 guitar in a gigbag with a bigger front pocket (the Blug does would even fit into a normal pocket) would be all i need to take with me. I would just plug into a clean amp or a speaker avail. at my friends. ... done
    The Blug does offer 2 expansion options - a footswitch and a looper kit, all in small format - thus offering a lot of "pro options"... full expansion ahead (;-) The only reason i haven't got one is - of course - monetary considerations (;-(( I remember a great product demo Thomas did at "session music" Frankfurt (avail. on UA-cam) where he explained the design having the touring Guitarist in mind.
    The H&K would fit into my small luggage trolley and it offers about all the needed FX ... so still a lot less to carry around in crowded ICE trains!
    Thanks a lot for sharing.
    Happy new year!

These floor amps where I can plug direct in are my jam (pun intended) because I still want great tones but on a floor board set up to plug direct in. At home I have cab that I plug into to practice.

    As long time & regular viewer of Andertons TV, I always like & have been liking the style of Rob & Captain to try out and voice out their instinct about the gears. And it is also somehow understandable & expectable that you are often sceptical about the new technology. But for this particular video, truly the both gear (esp. the Amp1, as a user) didn't perform their best for whatever reasons. Partially it is controversial to consider the amp doesn't sound good while going into PA, which could be due to the PA / the speakers / the combinations of everything. (e.g. would it be better after EQed or with a sim cab before PA/Speaker..)
    But by all means, it is Rob's and Captain's first instinct as always, and it is still nice to hear, and clearly there's no such gears pleasing everybody, and it is what it is.
    We love the brave & direct comments from the Andertons TV, and so I think about this video too.

    Mad respect for you guys but you really missed the mark on these. Both are awesome products - and not at all just aimed at high gain. I think having an analog driven amp tone with digital effects is the best possible sound and feel outside a classic tube amp and pedals. The Quilter products and these are absolute killer. Lee my man - the clean channel of that Black Spirit has tone for days - and you can save it in different configs on the board. You should have ripped mad blues on that - it sounds so awesome. It's class D amplification - if the Kemper can do it why can't these? Give Joss a call - get a proper run through. These deserve a better look.

    • @ERBarratt
      @ERBarratt 4 роки тому

      @@mattstewie420 Yeh - I'd steer clear of the Headrush, but the Helix, Gt-1000 etc around the £700-800 price mark are all pound for pound. I chose the GT-1000 because of my experience with the GT-100, and because the GT-1000 is slightly more built to be abused and stepped on!! I've spent many hours with Helix Native too and that's really great. In terms of routing you can do a lot more with the GT-1000.
      As for none-metal tones, each has a plethora of boutique/rock preamp models so you'll def find something you like in there.
      With these new modellers, the Impulse Response makes a HUGE difference - I recommend the ZETA Impulse pack (Free). The Diezel 4X12 IR is absoluutely smashing for any sound. Really nice.

  • @WittyMonikerHere
    @WittyMonikerHere 4 роки тому

    Just thought I'd chime in as I used to own the Black Spirit 200 head and recently got the Iridium. While, I think the Iridium is (so far) the superior amp of the two, I do think there is a fair bit of hype behind these amps that Andertons is dispelling.
    In both cases, they're both "ok", but I'd never choose them *over* a tube amp. That is to say, if you really like the Black Spriit, you'll love the Grandmeister Deluxe (also owned). Far superior.
    Both of these seem more comparable to really good solid state amps. If that's you bag, great - but you'll never match the "warmth" or "push" of a real tube amp power section. Tryng to get tones that cut through really well in a live mix can end up being really brittle or harsh if you don't tweak it juuuuuust right (Vs., say something like an Engl or a 5150, where almost every setting is very usable).
    I think people should think of these more as really, really good "backup rigs".... but, personally, I'd never record with them. And I'd never expect it to stand up to a "real" high end amp. Unless of course, you don't really gig that much, in which case, they're great pieces of gear.
    Just my $0:02.

There is still some graininess that isn't coming from the preamp. I think it's more a power section thing. Dealbreaker? No. I play my BS200 for fly dates and such and it is great. Hoping to see some improvement in the future.

    to all the experts shouting Rabea and Ola should do this - they already did, it sounded good. this is more a representation of a less "extreme" players playing the thing and how it would sound, which is valuable consumer info. also the amp on the floor concept is obviously not for everyone, like it is shown here, both prefer basic tube amps. I think the idea is taken from a modeler world - have everything in one package, but this time with analogue circuitry doing most of the work. kinda small target audience but it's great that there is an alternative to straight up digital devices.

H&k sound a bit muffled with certain pickups. Maybe an eq in the loop can fix that. I tend to lean more to h&k for the features but on the gm36 you needed to mess with the tone to get there and or needed dryer sounding pickups to get tone.
