- I get asked this ALL the time: how much money can I make on Medium? How long until I can make $1,000 per month? How much money is 1,000 views worth?

I decided to break it down by analyzing my own statistics.
What I found was surprising: 1,000 views is worth different amounts of money based on if you're looking at the whole month, an individual story, or even between stories on different topics.
This video breaks down the difference of each one (first 4 mins) and then goes through 4 strategies to really maximize those views to earn more money per thousand views (last 4 mins). Not all 1,000 views earn the same amount, so it's really critical to learn HOW to get more money for your writing.

If you tell it to someone he/she would just have a cloud of thought in its head and on extreme levels it could be just compassion or sympathy or empathy coming out of its mind. My curated article got 900 views and counting. Though, i only got paid 0.19$🤷♀️. Nearly all of the views came from non-medium subscribers but i find the payment kinda unfair considering the attention my article brought to the website. ( has been shared on reddit, Twitter and many other sites multiple times)

How much money can you make on Medium? Not very much. Been writing 4 months, 73 stories, and made $31.31. Don't get your hopes up. Also, evidently in curation jail-not that it matters.

After having been on Medium for a few months now, and watching all your videos, and learning all I can, I've come to a conclusion. If you want to make money (more than 0.20 per day) on Medium, be prepared to write in really popular categories. And for those of you playing along at home - that's not gardening.
I agree that writing in popular categories definitely helps but some people manage to carve out an entire niche out of nothing and succeed on the platform. For instance, Shannon Ashley and her personal essays.

As a newbie what should I do:-
1. Submit my blog posts on renowned publications
2. submit on new and emerging pubs
3. Or self publish?
Yes :D
I recommend a balance of 25% your own pub, 75% big pubs.
Big doesn't have to mean 500k+ followers - you should submit to several and experiment to see which audience responds best to your writing. I personally have found smaller pubs (1-10k followers) have a really great engagement rate, but you may find your experience differs!

Zulie, please as someone who is already making money on Medium, help us get all writers their fair pay. Writers from South Africa, India, Guatemala, Argentina, Israel and many more, do not get paid. It's not right.

You're totally right.
Like you say, at the moment, there is no way to be paid directly by Medium or Stripe if your country is not allowed. However, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from writing on Medium right now. You can totally sign up, start writing, build a portfolio and start getting followers now.
You won't be paid by Medium directly YET, and I know that sucks and is unfair and I really hope Medium/Stripe change their policy soon, but a) there are other ways to earn money, like driving people to your own blog, using affiliate links and so on and b) eventually, I hope, Medium/Stripe will monetize for additional countries. If that's the case, you'll be established when that happens.

I am always trying to find a workaround as it affects a lot of people, and I really believe that everyone deserves to be compensated for their writing, but as of yet, I have not found any good workarounds. As far as I can tell it's about 200ish words per minute, but then images also affect the read time. Hope this helps!

The only problem i found out since I've been researching about Medium is that, it seems that this platform is marketed more to writers. Most people never heard of it, meaning most readers don't even know about it's existence.
Now, my question is, is there even more readers subscribed than the writers themselves that are subscribed. It's something to think about. What's the actual ratio of writers to readers or basically the readers are the writers as well.
Most readers are readers, not writers! I thought the same thing, but Medium talked a bit about this. They have a lot of non-writer member growth.

I've subscribed yesterday and I really enjoy your videos. I'm planning to start a blog on Medium but my country doesn't have Stripe so I'm wondering how to solve this? Can I like wait until it's available in my country and then get paid for the past year or two? Also, I was wondering if it's okay for Medium if I link blogs from my website on Medium blog? Not to openly advertise of course, but rather link it only when that is appropriate, since I would write about similar topics. Thanks for sharing advice!
Hi Mara, you only need to open a US Bank account and you should be all set. TIAA bank offers some good options. Try it out and let me know!
I can't help with your first question I'm afraid. I don't think you get paid retroactively, but I do think you'll be well-established for when it is monetizable. So for example if you start now and gather followers, you'll be in a much better position than someone who only starts writing in your country when it becomes monetized if that makes sense.
Second question I CAN help with! If you're talking about linking to your website, that's 100% allowed and I'd encourage it. If you're talking about cross-posting, i.e. importing your blog's posts onto Medium, I also recommend moving them over to Medium, too, using their import tool: help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/214550207-Import-a-post

Now just to clarify, the earnings from readerships and views are from only paying medium members,right? There are no earnings from non members or medium writers who make no monthly payments?
This question is important because I know other platforms who pay their writers regardless of who is reading their articles.
Hi Nkeonye - yep, that's correct. Medium's payment model is based off member reads, since that's how they fund the platform. If the reader is not a paying Medium member, Medium does not pay you for that read.

Thank you for this explanation. Great video? Zulie, I have switched to stories with images only recently. Does it mean that earnings will be less due to different speed of scroll? I have a few text stories as well, but majority are imagery based. I grow organically on Medium, so people follow me by their wish only. I do not do f4f things. So I think people really like my content. I have almost 500 followers by now. What followers amount willl make a solid income? Thank you

To be honest, the income is not linearly on followers. For example, my 2nd month on Medium, Oct 2018, I had fewer than 500 followers and made over $500. Last month, April 2020, I had 8k followers and made $411. Curation and views/reads matters a lot more than number of followers in my experience.

Good question - I like the Ascent as they're friendly to newbies. But the coronavirus is a broad topic, as it affects anything from school to freelancing to fashion. I'd recommend finding what your secondary topic is besides the coronavirus from medium.com/topics and seeing which publications crop up there.

Hi Zulie! This is me again, another story of mine has just been curated, but it doesn't seem to do so well on the read ratio, I have gotten 28 views so far and only 7 reads, I wonder if Medium will stop promoting my story if my read ratio isn't up there, or do I not have to worry about the read ratio since it has just been curated, maybe it will get better in the future?
I get one or two views per day on my curated stories even a year after the fact, and sometimes there's an unexpected spike - again, only on curated stories. I don't know for sure but I expect Medium shows it to a pool of people, and if they click and read, it broadens the pool. If people react well to it on day one, good. I do think read time goes into this factor - higher leniency on longer posts.

Both times! The earnings are a combo of reads + how much time they spend on your story, at any point in any month.

It varies from publication to publication! Some do so pretty quickly - 1-2 hours - others take up to a week.
