    Master Palm, she is a slim craft of true beauty ! (Lovely oiled pine wood, I guess?) It is also great seeing you use traditional tools: your axe & knife in particular. Bless you for sharing your work on that project. Thanks from Barcelona. 🌿 🙏 🧜‍♂️

    This was wonderful, exactly what I have been searching for: a complete start to finish clinker-built dinghy process. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

    One of the most beautiful & detailed boat builds. Very enjoyable to watch.

    Having watched quite a number of videos of boat, kayak etc. builders using a variety of hardwoods to 'engineering' preciseness there's something liberation to see this gentleman using a softwood with the required skill to make a boat that will work. Feel with a little encouragement even could have a go. Thank you.

    Great video of a beautiful build. It could use more of that cute little helper in pink, and less of that mindlessly repeating and distracting music. When I watch a craftsman at work, I want to hear the sawing, the hammering, the incredible sound a truly sharp plane makes, etc.. I also would have liked a lot more photos of the finished boat. The teaser we got showed a boat any of us would be proud to own.

    Don’t know if anyone can answer this, I’m thinking of building a similar style boat myself (only 12’ long though) and was curious as to whether any sealant is needed between the planking, even boat cotton? He doesn’t use any but It’s not clear if the boat is painted, or if it’s just that traditionally none was used!

    • @kristofschneider601
      @kristofschneider601 5 років тому +3

      I ask myself the same. Could be it is sealed traditionally with pitch or similar stuff. Or maybe it works without: Once i build a wooden bucket for a friend doing historic reanactment. No glue no sealing, only planks and two iron belts. When I finished the work, I tried it and the water poured out everywhere. I was frustrated, bucket looks fine but is of no use. My friend soaked the bucket for three days in water and after that, it holds the water properly. Could be similar with this kind of boat.

    What an incredible build, wonderful workmanship!!! Isn't that pine though - how do you protect it from the elements?

      I've watched Scandinavian boat builders build the outer skin with plantation pine these days instead of cutting down precious oak trees. It works because we now have modern marine quality varnishes and paints. The same principle applies to plywood construction, providing everything is sealed with a waterproof membrane. The old Vikings only had tar-wash for rot prevention, which worked well on oak, but not so good on pine boards. I'm no expert but I watch a lot of videos on traditional boat building. Hope this helps.

    He is ambidextrous. Hammer and saw with left. Drills with right. No wonder he is a copper rivet master.

    All this Work is to be done to get a watertight construction. Imagine what can be done with so much knowledge if modern materials are used! The same designs! You can not convince me that copper clinking is the best for boatbuilding.

    Gunnebo Swedish nails, best I have ever used. I've never built a boat, but I'd almost consider it just to use that little rivet setting gun...!
