Shane, your account of that fateful night was harrowing! I'm so glad transmetatarsal amputation was not needed and you survived to tell the tale

I know right. I was just thinking to myself that I watch to much UA-cam when I should be investing time to write my novel. Then, I hear Shane's 'way with words' and I'm feeling both inspired and inadequate for the job.

I related to Hannah's doctor story so much! I went to the doctor because I banged my toe. I received a lecture from the doctor about my high bmi and the benefits of diet and exercise. FOR A BANGED TOE! It's always the first place doctors go. So now I live with debilitating disabilities that I can't get diagnosed and treated because I'm not skinny.

You two are way too funny!!! The story about Ron was an adventure for sure. When I was 18/19 I worked at a server in an assisted living dining room. One of the residents was always hitting on the young female staff. But he didn’t remember from day to day really anything. So he would ask me for a kiss first thing when I came to his table by saying “How ‘bout a kiss?” And I’d say “Sorry (name) we’re all out of kisses, would you like some soup?” And he would guffaw at that, every single time. I could never tell if he remembered this routine, but I think about him sometimes and it makes me laugh.

When I was 10 I had a similar experience to the Ron story. My siblings and I were home alone at night watching TV in our half-basement when I hear a noise in the next room. I opened the door to see a man halfway through the window. I immediately closed the door and told my brother to call 911. When the police arrive, the man was passed out on the bed under the window. They took us to the police station and had us sit in the same room as the man in the jail cell. It turns out that he was a friend of my oldest sister and he was trying to get away from someone trying to fight him at a party. To this day, I cannot sleep if I don't check all of my doors and windows to make sure they are locked. That was one of the scariest nights of my life!

Hannah! I am only a couple minutes into your story but I had the same breathing issue. Lol apparently it’s called air hunger and is indeed a symptom of chronic anxiety. I still get it when I’m stressed. It improves if you cut your breaths in half even when you get the desire to breathe deeper.

When I was about 20 I went to the doctor and said, "I think I have generalized anxiety disorder," and he said, "Okay." No real follow-up questions or referrals to therapy, but at least I got a prescription out of my appointment. 😂 Jokes aside, that paper bag story is wild. I'm so sorry that happened! It sounds like you eventually found your way to actually helpful resources, so uh, yay? Mental health circa 2010... what a time.

I was told the same as Shane, You have the level of depression, anxiety etc expected for the stress your life has brought so your all good. So not only do we have to deal with the physical distress we may encounter but also the mental, emotional, social etc distress that comes with it. Great.

Wow, that “Ron” story really had my heart racing, literally. I have a lot of anxiety and the “Grounding technique” works well for me. I am currently feeling textures on my sofa with my eyes closed. It is comforting and yet helps me calm down. Breathing techniques and naming objects in room helps as well. I prefer the textures though and have been doing that since I was 4 yrs. old. I am from a dysfunctional family. My daddy was absent from the home when I was 4 yrs old. I can remember crying for my daddy and then taking a
soft baby blanket from my bed, rubbing the softness against my face, and feeling calmer. To this day my hands explore texture when my anxieties rise. Calmness is always the goal! Hoping everyone explores ways of releasing anxiety. Everyone have a super day and remember….. you ARE loved and you ARE special!❤😊CarrieJo

Such a funny and also super interesting episode. Really loved it. When I was little, I was hyper anxious (like highly highly, uncontrollably anxious- terrified of getting lost, being abandoned, floods- none of which was inspired by real trauma) and the thing that stopped it was (a series of things of course but the first thing) someone I didn’t know asking me for help. She ended up becoming a really lovely friend and it was really the beginning of me understanding that I could look after others. ❤ Anyway, lots of love ❤️

As someone who used to have not only anxiety but full blown Panic Attacks, I was told to try the paper bag trick too. It did not remotely work for me but I guess it does for some people & there is science behind it to support it. Google that. I was always an anxious child & adult, still am but was fine with being out & about any time by myself, as my disAbility got worse I knew I could no longer defend myself so now I am only good with day time trips only & no sketchy places or people. My husband has never been afraid of anything, even death, between his disAbility & PTSD, now days he is hyper concerned about home security. Mainly at night when we are in bed, that's when people are most vulnerable anyway. Anxiety is real & how we feel is real, having our loved ones understand this makes everything much easier.

Hannah, paper bag breathing was certainly the thing back in the day for a panic attack only, I have done that, BUT anxiety /panic disorder requires follow up, possible medication, counselings etc.The doctor was irresponsible dismissing your symptoms with just that 'treatment'...You should have given a 2 week follow up or nurse phone call follow up within days..I worked Primary Care for 25 years and THIS is unacceptable . ANY shortness of breath (regardless of age) should be evaluated with at least a chest X-ray, possible EKG or breathing/ lung studies! In her small defense she was no doubt just assessing because of your age and didn't see any alarming symptoms..nevertheless, it was and is lazy care for any patient...Sorry for that traumatic experience ..

A week after I had had surgery, I was standing outside my hotel, waiting for my cousin to collect me while the weirdos walked by. I realised this was the first time since the surgery that I would've been able to cause trouble. Feeling vulnerable was incredibly scary.

I think you should create a “Hand Sweat Corner” segment every week. I think Hannah is down playing how much we are interested/concerned about your hand health.

I work in a hospital as the nighttime operator so therefore I deal with a lot of people that have dementia when they called me and they're so confused from their patient rooms when I just want to go up there and hold their hand and make them know that everything's okay it's a very sad situation that they're stuck like that

Poor Ron. Poor Shane. I was my Mom’s caregiver when she became really disabled by her Alzheimer’s, she didn’t know me anymore and twice tried to strangle me (I was much stronger than her), she also scratched and bit pretty frequently. You’re right, Ron could have done just about anything!

Oh that's so awful what Alzheimer's can do to people. I'm sure your mom would've been horrified if she'd known what she was doing 😟
