    When your petrol is so dirty, just pour it to a bottle, close it, and leave it for a couple of hours. Most of the dirt will go down to it's bottom, and if you pour the petrol gently to another bottle, or back to your cleaner, you can use it again with minimal waste.
    With this, I use the same about 2 litres of petrol for several years now.

    a neat addition to this would be to glue a magnet under the bottom of the jar, so that the tiny steel particles that get washed away from the chain can not make their way back into the chain when shaking the container

    Hi Oz , i have been watching DIY vdos on cycle maintenance , and specially the chain cleaning, and you have been by far the best in all the youtube channels that i have subscribed to ,i did make the chain cleaning container not exactly like yours but still made my own version for it , but what helped is the idea , the mesh was like a saving grace in the conatiner for cleaning smaller parts which can easily be lost or dropped, cut to the chase , i did it bought a 9 speed missing link, cleant the chain like you mentioned in your VDO and now my ridding is so smooth and effortless ..... I use an empty plastic 1.5L beverage bottle, pour in Park Tools chain bright and drop in chain. Leave for a few hours, shake and pull chain back out, that also works wonders. The filings and dirt stay at bottom of the bottle, I pour out the clean chainbrite into a new 1.5L bottle and use again. For Cassettes I put them into a aluminum tin foil baking dish and use toothbrush and some chainbrite.

      @@SCAPE0GOAT it is not the same as silicone grease. White Grease is usually lithium based, it is considered a dry lubricant good for metal parts, it will not attract dust and grit. silicone is a synthetic gel good for lubricating plastic parts, or pivots/axles that have plastic spacers or washers in them. Typically it is used in plastic gear boxes or gear trains, common is appliances or in automotive window regulators. Plastic gears usually are not used on bicycles (not yet anyway).

      i HOPE YOU ARE TEASING. While gasoline is a good cleaner. It is as you said dangerous to use. Far better SAFER is lighter fluid. Lighter fluid can be purchased in the smoking section-if stroes still sell lighters like ZIPPO. Or, you can buy it in the paint section as naptha or in the camping section as Coleman fuel..

    • @duanestark5807
      @duanestark5807 6 років тому +5

      For gasoline or naptha to ignite you have to have the correct flash point, gas vapor to oxygen mixture. In a container that small the vapor to oxygen will be too high to ignite. Kerosene will also burn, used in lanterns and jet fuel, and It does not evaporate so it will leave paraffin oil behind. I would say that naptha would be the best then mineral spirits / turpentine, they don't contain the unknown additives in gas that are probably really bad for you. Also naptha evaporates super fast. And good luck trying to get a chain to spark submerged in a liquid....

    Think this cleaner looks great to be fair! I just wondered what type of plastic you'd recommend using as i know some plastics have a better resistance to petrol than others.... What type of plastic are you using oz cycle? Any bad effects? Cheers!

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  7 років тому

      +Tom Stringer I have no idea what "type" of plastic the container is made of Tom. A lot of plastics disolve with exposure to petrol...usually its the cheap,disposable types. All I can advise is try a container out with petrol in it before putting bike bits in it too. Cheers...Steven

    Do you like the Wippermann Connex chain? I just ordered a 9SE for my 32kg rear motor fat ebike. I need the reliability, so I don't end up walking it home with a broken chain.

    I noticed that there is some 'metal looking' edge around the sieve. It's not from just folding the sieve at the edge. It looks like solder. How did you make that?

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  4 роки тому

      The seive is just a cheap one from supermarket,the edge is folded metal

    • @hansvanmeer8395

      Is the folded metal from the sieve itself or from some other piece of metal? If the latter, what kind?

    I can understand the idea of getting the crap off the chains the manufacturers put on them, but molten wax is supposed to push contaminates and metal particles out of the chain. Doesn't that make continual cleaning like this obsolete?

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  5 років тому +1

      A chain will always have some contaminants on and in it no matter what lube is used. A chain will be bathing in contaminated wax if not thoroughly clean before. immersion.

    How well would alcohol work as an alternative to petrol/gasoline or kerosene? I have a highly sensitive respiratory system so alcohol would be nicer for me. Would it work as well?

      Yes alcohol should work fine Aaron, its just more expensive.

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  7 років тому

      +Nikolaj Andersen Tried it and it was too flimsy. I also reinforce it with wooden broomsticks but then a T joint broke. 80mm plumbers PVC would be strong enough but then all the joints are just as expensive as a cheaper metal stand already available.

    Thank you for sharing this! In this video, do you use unleaded petro as a cleaner (light pink one)? I sometime bit worry how dispose those dirty used petro after cleaning. Do you have any idea? It's not good to through them out to sewage pipe... Or, use bit more environment friendly degreaser.

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  7 років тому

      +Bunji Kawanishi You will get 3 to 4 uses out of 1 cup of petrol. When petrol is very dirty,put container out in an open area without the lid on and it will evaporate. Wipe out container of the dirt and your ready to go again.

    • @777bunji
      @777bunji 7 років тому

      Thank you for your advice! Bit worry about evaporate petrol since it goes out to air - I feel it's not good to environment. Anyway, will try couple of degreaser and find some good one! :-)

    • @alantaylor6691
      @alantaylor6691 6 років тому

      There's no way to be short-term environmentally friendly when getting rid of petrol. I tend to just send it off to the rubbish tip, it's all bad no matter what you do. The Earth will purify it back to nature over time, but that purification process involves pain, that is the only real cleanser, pain is the only true purifier in the universe.

    The only downside is the petrol also gets in to the inside of the links and washes away the oil from there! Chains will wear much faster!

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  7 років тому

      +rkan2 Yes petrol does that so it is necessary to bath the chain in lube or wax for complete lubrication. Please see the waxing chain video.

  • @Hawlkeye-e9p
    @Hawlkeye-e9p 6 років тому

    I used to do this. Im fl and we have sugar sand. I stopped doing this. Its not worth the extra work. Just clean everything offf the outside of a new chain. Use it utill it starts to grind and then replace it. Once it grinds the 3d bearings are gone anyway.

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  6 років тому

      The lubricant inside the chain should be as clean as possible. On the outside of the chain it doesnt matter.

    Nice vid, thanks. What alternatives can be used for degreasing? Is Kerosene effective? Other options?

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  7 років тому

      +Derek Tan Hi Derek.Petroleum and kerosene will work but still leaves a thin film of oil. Other chemicals work but can take a lot more time and repeated efforts....ie dishwashing liquid. You could use kerosene then finish it off with dishwashing or laundry liquid. Degreaser is best if you can get it,hardware or automotive shops.
