Wouldn’t Blockchain be the new ERP? Lol Ok got to the end and you said it… I was listening and like; well that’s Blockchain for industry but they haven’t learnt to adopt yet! Maybe another 5 -10 years before the do understand it.
I was there at the birth of ERP whilst employed with a Fortune 50 manufacturing company. I lived through all the evolution and drama that Eric references and, after 20+ years of practical experience, I joined a major ERP vendor in a consulting role for another 20+ years. This video by Eric is the best summation I've seen regarding the history and challenges of ERP. I'll say it more bluntly than Eric: the key to success is in the *thought* ware - not the *soft* ware. Designing business processes which support your business goals is critical and, to do that, you have to be very clear (and realistic) about your business goals. It is unrealistic to think you'll be #1 in each of: cost, quality, service, and innovation. Obviously you can't ignore any of those but you really need to pick the *one* that will supersede all others and build your business processes with that in mind.
Currently job searching and seeing ERP everywhere, this was a great way to learn more about it! Straight forward and well spoken with solid knowledge without losing your audience !! Thank you so!
Eric Thank you! Your seemless presentation of Erp systems has helped me understand the dynamics better. I have used Erp in previous corporations and never really looked at it the way you explained it. Thanks again.
Hello Eric. Your video was very helpful in understanding ERP. I started in my job as a City employee. We use Oracle and I am learning it as I go. I was hired to assist Project Managers with the CIP (Capital Improvement Program) reports to show what the budget available funds are, financial resource string of accounts, invoices, purchase orders, change orders, tracking financials, etc. We are 2 years in; one year with the finance team and organization (city), and implementation development team of Oracle, changing from one site to the new ERP Oracle Fusion Cloud, moving budgets, building the database to meet the needs of the staff know-how and use, year two. I am in the year two and come in with no experience of Oracle but grateful that I am not one who sees change as challenging, I see it more as progressing into future enterprise needs. We are a Tier 1, as you so eloquently explained. Your history lesson was epic - Thank you for that! I certainly learned some things. What I need to learn is OFC (Oracle Financial Cloud). It's challenging when I'm trying to learn and understand the software use in our organization with the Oracle's Help Center language. The manual is set up as an Oracle manual for all organizations using it to understand, not specifically to ours. The training manuals on our city site are more for surface learning. I have been asked to create Quick Reference Guides for Know-Hows in reports and research. I recently learned how to add Task/Subtasks to projects, and allocate budget to some tasks. Do you have any suggestions since you did mention Oracle as one of the 3 larger ERP users (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft) where I should go to learn more of the OFC specifically implemented for our organization? To give credit to our Sr. Accounting team, who are the ones reaching out to the Oracle implementation team, as my go-to-gurus when I need to learn a little further. I ask for training meetings and use the information for the QRGs I'm creating for in-house learning. Thank you, Maria.
I’m now a welder/fabricator for structural steel fabrication with a background in medicine, we used epic in the hospital. Seems like it would be a great asset to the company I currently weld for.
Thanks for this video - the powerful statement was ERP Software can help Organizations go to the next level if "Managed correctly, Implemented correctly and Leveraged correctly "
Hey Eric, thanks for making this video! I’m writing some marketing content for an ERP system. There’s a learning curb for me. I didn’t even know what ERP software was before I started. More research I do, the better my content will be, and more helpful for my target audience. Thank you so, so much!
Fantastic presentation with well informed speaker who explained the topics and information in a way all people could feel informed and educated. This left a smile on my face. I am an old school professional having helped companies in the past and had become confused by all the new "alphabet" topics. Ex - ERP grew from something I used years ago - MRP. Sometimes I wonder if our jump to being more "efficient and streamlined" has meant we have created more confusion and thus more errors in what we are actually trying to accomplish. I liked this presenter - he knows what KISS means - keep it symple -
Transitioning from academic track to Change Management in higher ed, thanks for these videos: I will be watching every one of them at least once. I'm thinking about angling towards service firms for something like Workday Student, but you are making the "technology agnostic" consultation role very enticing.
ERP fails largely because of not being able to properly implementing business processes. Lot of the time the analysis is not done before selecting the right ERP tool.
Simple and easy to understand what ERP system works in a company. I get the idea of what's ERP and how it can work in a company. thank you for the introduction.
@@erickimberling you're explaination is much clear than my friend. even though he is working on investigating cloud ERP adoption in small and medium enterprises , aiming to help clients understand the benefits of cloud ERP and assess any challenges/risk factors associated with the implementation of these systems as his PhD project. But when he talk about it, I can't get any point.
Hello Mr Eric, I am an undergraduate student who is working on the relationship between ERP and startups and will be grateful if you can assist me with some very helpful articles and reports. Thank you
we implemented sap in maersk/total, and now logistics staff loose 80 percent of thrir time to enter contracts and other data to the db... total failure for regular employees
"Failure" is somewhat subjective, but generally it refers to projects that take more time and money than expected, fail to deliver expected business benefits, and/or create operational disruption at go-live. The ones that start over or give up entirely are a lot less than that...
This is a really solid video on the overview of erp! Very informative as it touches on the history all the way to current trends and implementation considerations.
Sir honestly guide which degree is best BS ERP OR BS ACCOUNT AND FINANCE after completing Account and finance then i will go for Acca so which route boost my Currier and what you will suggest me. which have more scope please guide me i am really confused
If depends on what kind of projects you prefer. Sap projects are usually bigger and more complex, while NetSuite is more often used by smaller and mid market companies.
Explains ERP by introducing you to MRP. Lol. Sometimes i think even your potential customers will drown in an ocean of acronyms. Having worked in the space I think all the acronyms are used to exaggerate the importance of the industry. Less human, more acronyms.

How do you define a failure rate of 80 percent? Does the project completely fail and the companies have to start over or give up entirely ?
