I feel like people who only stan singers and belittle the importance of vocal technique sometimes ignore the freedom and creative abilities that being a vocalist allows for, especially when it comes to making music and songwriting. The ability to use your voice and vocal abilities to enhance your songs/albums is extremely important imo. Being a well-rounded vocalist or having many vocal skills under your belt allows a musician to be more creative with their melodies, to express emotion without having to worry about going off-key, to create an entirely new mood solely through vocalizing. If you can only comfortably sing 1.5 octaves without much agility, how interesting can your music be really?
Ikr. It's similar with musical instruments. We can't play Turkish March or Moonlight Sonata with a small pianica, but it is possible with a grand piano.
We live in a time where EVERYONE is amazing, EVERYONE is a legend, EVERYONE is an icon 🙄 the words are losing all meaning. Good faith criticism & commentary is sorely needed.
It's interesting how fandoms takes some critiques personally as if singer wasn't a profession like any other. I mean, yeah, some people will use valid point of critique in order to attack an individual, but you can identify it analysing the context. People are flawed and there's always room for improvement. I think it's not okay to tell someone they can't be a singer because they're not great vocalists, but it's totally ok to say it'll be good for them to improve their skills. Music itself it's bigger, vocals are just part of what makes a great song. Taylor is just a singer, but she's an artist when it comes to songwriting, and she doesn't need to sound like Beyoncé to be an artist in her own right, and Beyoncé doesn't need to be a songwriter either. You can compare their abilities, but you can't say, industry wise, that one is more deserving than the other because what they can or can't do at their job (of course I'm not talking about race and privileges here).
Pro singer here! I want to point out too, that certain expert vocalists can still have major technique issues, BUT still sound amazing because of their natural SINGING ability. Take Ari, one of my all-time favorites: she manages to have incredible soft palette placement despite that fact that her melismatic articulation (aka riffing) looks like she’s eating the air when she goes for any run. You’re supposed to let the jaw hang & just let the notes fly when you riff, so to see SUCH bad technique on her and her STILL get those notes she does just shows how naturally gifted she is at singing itself. Super interesting who can get away with this and who can’t!
It’s also important to remember that these singers are not just trying to sing properly but trying to also make sure their voice sounds unique and is recognized on the radio or in the store when people are shopping. Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande were taught by their vocal coaches to sing in a way that makes your voice unique so they all have these quirks but they are taught to do this without damaging their voice.
@@AlexisDimes YESSS, and if you’re exclusively doing that kind of stuff in the booth but using more “regular” technique onstage that would explain a lot too. Such a good point!
There are *genius* singers (Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Lou Reed to name a few), who have almost below average voices. Voice is a mere instrument, but ability to communicate emotions through singing is ART.
@@brigit.the.seagoat Nina is one of my favorite singers in any era, but I kinda agree with OP here. I wouldn't call her an A+ vocalist but she was already an intelligent musician who could really make her distinct timbre shine. She combined her passion for music with hers of what was going on at the time. You never had to question how she felt on something (her interviews show this as well).
A singer is someone who sings. A vocalist is someone who SANGS. Not all singers are vocalists but all vocalists are singers. EDIT: Lmao 7:35 was great and so true! That’s why a lot of the better judges on singing competition shows (and even music critics who give reviews for a living) don’t or can’t sing well but nonetheless provide great constructive feedback. You don’t have to be able to sing to know if something sounds bad; you just need a good ear lol. And just because someone can sing, doesn’t mean they make great judges, just like how someone great at math doesn’t mean they’re good at teaching it. In fact, so many of the singer/artist judges are often too nice like they’re almost afraid to give out criticism when it’s called for perhaps bc they don’t want to upset fans of the show and potentially hurt their singing career.
There's nothing wrong with criticism and commentary on a singer's voice as long as there's no malice and mean intent behind it. I mean you should want to see your fav continue to grow and improve their artistry. Trust me, it's better they improve than peak because when they peak that's a hard reality to witness.
I'd really love to see a video comparing the most popular male singers (Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Weeknd, etc.)! I think it would be super interesting to watch and really informative!
Out of all the male singers you mentioned, Ed Sheeran is the best out of all of them, but none of them (the ones that you mentioned) are good, and are relatively underdeveloped vocalists.
@@KittyTsundere It’s clear you aren’t informed about their vocal abilities none of them are underdeveloped and Ed isn’t the best out of them, but I’ll examine their techniques a bit closer to perhaps see what you mean.
@@justchilling704 so who do you think is the best then and what do you think about their technique then for now? Because from afaik about them, they may have pretty tones (but that’s subjective), but none of them have a solid or strong grasp of technique even much of the basics (especially Bieber and Mendes). They’re all what the OP video calls as “singers” instead of vocalists lol. It’s pop anyways; not that huge of a deal anyways lol.
@@KittyTsundere Alright, I listened to them all live, and tbh they all sound good vocally, but I’ll give Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd the edge kn vocal technique Ed might slightly beat out Abel. Abel, and Justin have improved the past 3 years noticeably also.
YES ! A lotof people tend to forget that vocal chords are an instrument. Singing is like playing the guitar : some people are better at it than others because they have better technique. The thing is, you can have the best technique in the world, if you can't put emotions, nuances, and everything that gives life to what you're playing, you're not a good musician. Because music is an art. So, my opinion is that you might be a good technician because you know how to use your voice perfectly right, but if you can't make the music sound good, you're not a musician. Some singers have both, some have neither. And that is, to me, the objective way to see it. What ppl don't get is that you can like smth that isn't good, and not like smth that is. It's not a bad thing bc you're entitled to your own taste. But that doesn't mean that good and bad don't exist. So, in a nutshell, I think you're totally right, like always haha.
I agree when you said Mariah is both a singer and vocalist why? 1. She uses her emotions to sing 2. She knows how to arrange the song in the best way. 3. Her vocals always fit the songs she's singing 4. She always deliver the vocals in the best way depending on the song type, genre and style. 5. Speaking of style she always styles out everything (her runs, melody, tone, belts and vocals) 6. She's always focusing to have a spectacular and amazing vocals. 7. She's always been technical to all of her belts, Whistles and any other part of her vocals. 8. She had a great breath support, resonance, support, projection, runs etcand she always try to be tension free as much as possible. 9. she is a a very well rounded vocalist and singer 10. She knows how to sing and to sustain her voice (sure her vocals might not been as great as her prime but she still can pull off soemthing impressive vocally also she went through alot of things). Also anothe thing I wanna say is. Mariah is a very versatile singer/vocalist she always had alot of singing style while being very distinctive, she sung almost all of the genres (Pop, House, Country, ballad, rock, Blues, Soul, Gospel, Dance, Latin pop, Rap, RnB, Christmas, Hip-hop etc.) and her being versatile is probably her most underrated things for her.
Ariana is also a perfect example of being both: as a singer she can deliver a very emotional performance which happens more than it should to her after all what happened to her, so she can really put her emotions out naturally so it sounds so real and raw (ofc) as a vocalist, she just has it all now - agility - tehnique - support up to F5 - resonance on mid belts - good lows for such a high pitched voice, she can change the tone as well (like in Save Your Tears) - creativity (litteraly every single Sweetener Tour performance has at least 20 new vocals, her songs are way better live vocally (breathin's Bb5s and C6s, no tears left to cry's A5s, god is a woman's Bb6s, G#6s and F#6s, Be Alright's G#5s and way more) - she has the range (from C#3 (i think, bc a lot people heard in some of her songs to belting up to C6(she was playing with her voice but still) to Eb7 (she probably can go higher) - she knows her voice extremely well She she does all those hard songs and vocals while constantly dancing and moving, for hours... ...and even better is that she is constantly improving and working on her voice which is also proven by the fact that she is even better after all these high notes live over the years instead of losing her voice
she can not support to an F5…..her most consistent note is a C#5. she is not as good as you think. she can’t even execute head voice but she is the vocalist of our generation? Even Chloe is better than her. and resonance where???????? Stop with the lies
Singer is the whole job - doing the recording, promoting the songs, doing interviews, captivating the audience, and building a following. Whereas vocalist is a specification in that job. Some people are good vocalists but suck at establishing a following. I think that's partly because their songs are too vocal focused. Nobody really enjoys too much belting or runs today. Nowadays, a song that you can vibe to everyday is the recipe for a successful single. To most people, that is simply not a song with lots of belting and vocal agility. Plus the average music listener is not vocally talented enough to keep up and sing with a song like that hence why they turn to singers with less vocal focused music but are much more enjoyable maybe in terms of the beat, the vibes, the lyrics, the "singability" of the song. With this, you can sort of get why more vocally oriented singers are less popular. Taeyeon and Ailee comes to mind. Taeyeon has a much more listenable music compared to Ailee. Of course, Taeyeon is a good vocalist too but I feel like she knows how to make music better by not oversprinking them with too much vocals. She keeps it simple and incorporates other things to make her songs interesting.
I think that Christina Aguilera have a huge potential but she just choose not studied vocal technic. She prefer to be like more a passional singer and artist than a vocalist, but i personally think that she could be both, with technic the singer have more tools to express feelings. I'm sorry for my broken english!!
i think in kpop vocals are a huge after thought and the fact that so many ppl say "well not everyone can be a main vocalist" kinda takes away the point in trying to be a better vocalist in general. you don't have to strive to be the best at something to be good at it or even enjoy it...
Right? I miss the time in which vocal groups like EXO could deliver stellar and emotional vocals live with proper technique while still performing. Idols have become singers rather than vocalists and it seems vocally stellar groups like EXO will be some of the last as the generations move on. It's extremely disappointing. I'm sick of watching people lip sync vocals and only hearing their voices in controlled and UNNATURAL circumstances and tones. Kpop is settling for mediocrity in the vocal department in exchange for good looks, which takes away the part that made Kpop special in the first place. Now, it's like watching subpar Western vocalists (ie. Justin Bieber) on stage but in Korean and in flashy outfits. Fans still continue to settle for it and praise them for being legends on how they look rather than their dedication to singing in general. (Looking at you, stray kids🙄). It's to the point where entire groups will not have any strong main OR lead vocals, and would rather just talk their lines or lip sync it 💀 it's actually ridiculous
@@rondelmoore7130 now, lets not get delusional here lmao. Whenever Chloe belts its always strongly supported and has a very resonant and great tone. You really had the audacity.
@@rondelmoore7130 i mean, have you heard her and halle covering pretty hurts, chloe's belts were phenomenal and very much supported. And the list goes on.
I agree with what you said that everyone should enjoy music however they want to, but outside technicalities & theory. It grinds my gears when people downplay vocal technique whenever comparison discussions come up. Average / good / amazing vocalists are determined based on vocal technique simply because it is the most objective. Whereas emotions and expressions are very much subjective which can be interpreted differently from one person to another. E.g. We can objectively say whether a singer is singing with dynamics or not but we can’t say the same about how much the singer is conveying their emotion. I could say Adele’s singing never moves me but another person would disagree and the debate would be never-ending.
Finally someone that agees that Adele is NOT a vocalist lol. I love Adele, but her voice is okay. Her music is amazing. I find that people hate on Beyoncé and say Adele is a better vocalist when that’s far from the truth. She’s just a way better song writer. I’d buy an Adele album faster than a Bey album, but I will rather listen to Bey sing live.
I love this video and I love your style of commentary. I feel like you give an objective point of view and you present the reasons for your arguments which leaves us your viewers open to disagree with you and present our own arguments if need be. I feel like the general public has lost the value of what great singing actually is, so we need commentary like yours to sort of place things into perspective. It's not a measure of someone's worth as a human being whether they sing well or not or are stronger in certain areas than in others, it's simply a testament to their skill and what they are good or bad at. And we can discuss these things in a respectable way without bashing anyone. I sing myself and am always analyzing the technique of singers I listen to, it's fun for me so videos like yours are super fun to watch and learn from! Keep them coming!
I think as time goes on you're progressing and changing too and I agree with you even more, quite some time now, especially in comparison to the begining!! Love your channel, wish you all the best!!
This video is good and I agree with a good 70% of it but the comment section really just disappointed me like some of y’all will really just tear down another woman just to boost ur fave 😩 EDIT : the fact some of y’all just throw the term “support” around without actually knowing the meaning / definition of the word really proves that vocal stans these days just say whatever they want without the proper research
🤣🤣🤣 that comparison between singing criticism and food criticism is on point. I can't sing to save my life but I know who sings better in a competition for example. I don't understand why these people get in their feelings when their favorite artists are criticized. It's not like the artists give them some bones or something.
I really appreciate you ending the video encouraging people to enjoy music in their own terms, cause thats ultimetaley what it all should be about. Finding music that moves you, which ultimately doesnt depend on how technically good the singer is. I also would love to give you some recommendations in case you dont know some of these great vocalists too well: Sarah Vaughn, Eva Cassidy, Ibrahim Ferrer, Rufus Wainwright... the list goes on! Hope you'll find them interesting!
The vocals are simply no longer resonant or open. Also, the vocals seem to be in service of the instrumentation. I listened to a Journey video today, with Steve Perry, and it was amazing. Clear diction, open vowels, resonant tone
That intro took me out! 🔥 *I really think there's a difference between a singer and a vocalist;* the latter is much more concerned with technique and vocal prowess. I'm glad that you mentioned it! *Arguably, Adele is a better singer than Beyonce however Beyonce us a better vocalist than Adele.* *Christina Aguilera is a vocalist!* Yes, her belting technique is questionable however she has shown that she is aware of this and mostly utilizes a certain approach intentionally, but not only that, she has other parts of her voice that are quite developed on a technical level. I admire how consistent you are with these insightful topics plus the way you maintain objectivity throughout most of your content is very impressive. 👨🏫🎶✨
I love ❤️ your comments 💯😆 I literally always look for your name …. Ha 😂 Just to ask what do you think of the Little Mix girls technically ⁉️⁉️ Just want to HEAR your opinion/WISDOM 😄
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 When it comes to being a vocalist Beyonce and to be honest, it's not even close...Beyonce is a better vocalist than Adele; this is more objective. Adele is a better singer; this one is more subjective thus the majority holds precedence and to the masses, she is the one who moves them more (On an emotive level). That's why the "Adele is a better vocalist than Beyonce" narrative was trending. People were conflating the emotive aspect (plus their preferences of tone) with vocal technique & prowess (the focal aspect of being a vocalist). Thanks for your kind comment 💕
@@JoCurKRAZE I appreciate your kind words! Please are you asking where they rank technically amongst themselves or within the industry? Actually, kindly give your take first. I'd love to hear it ☺️
@@GarageStudio7 Both actually & awww ☺️ ok - I will try Amongst themselves - Perrie is WITHOUT A DOUBT the BEST VOCALIST amongst the girls (always has been honestly) & against the industry underneath 30 - I think she is pretty exemplary for the most part (her Mid-Belts & Resonance is beautiful, her lower register is nicely developed & her head voice is exceptional along with her vibrato - one of the best in POP Music honestly) she is my favorite & I am excited to see what she does solo wise - she deserves all the success as I think she is quite underrated still by the fandom & downplayed constantly 🤷🏽♂️ …. Jade is the 2nd best vocalist in the group & possibly the best SINGER in Little Mix (between her & Perrie) - her musicality/creativity is amazing & her falsetto is beautiful ! I am excited to see how continues to blossom as a young vocalist & so interested to see solo wise what her music sounds like 💯 Leigh Anne is a great singer 🎤 but I want her to further progress as a vocalist ! Love ❤️ her tone & I am glad to see her confidence now brimming as she is believing in herself more - confidence is her biggest setback I think ….. Also Jesy is a great stylistic singer and has huge potential as a vocalist . Her voice is naturally soulful & I will love to see her more along the vein of moody, vampy R&B - I think her mellifluous vibrato will work beautiful on that type of music …. But that’s it for me - hope it went well lolls wbu?? Also you can say if you agree or disagree with any of my assessments lolls
I love this video! It's good that you take a logical view of this topic and point out those comments you got in other videos at 7:11. Though humans are biased,if there is a criteria or anything standard to keep comparing it to,I believe we can all have fair judgements.
I stan vocalists. I will never discredit singer-songwriters like Taylor, Adele, and Mariah, but there is NOTHING more impressive than a live vocalist. Kelly Clarkson is perfect example of being both a outstanding singer AND vocalist. For me, a vocalist is able to sustain notes comfortably with controlled vibrato.
Kelly Clarkson has a beautiful voice and she’s a completely underrated vocalist because she’s absolutely amazing! Also, have you not ever seen Mariah Carey live? Especially in her prime, she’s like the ultimate golden standard - js.
About the belting and high note thing, Lauren can do riffs and runs decently, her lower register is great, she delivers the songs with good emotions, yet Ally is usually considered better because of her upper register and belting.
the beginning of the video should help you out in this: Lauren is (debated) a better singer than Ally, but Ally is a better VOCALIST for sure since she has more technique to her. And this is objective. Objectively, Ally is the better VOCALIST in 5H: she has the biggest supported range (G#3 up to E5, while Lauren is F#3-A4), the biggest range overall, the widest mixed voice range (mixes with vibrato up to C6!!!), she has the best vibrato in the group, a very solid falsetto and head voice and she is versatile.
Lauren is a singer. Ally is a vocalist. I’d say they’re both pretty exclusively limited to those terms and I feel like ANOF explained that concept in this video, but I’ll explain as well. Lauren has a strong lower register and decent agility. She also has a very appealing tone and is especially emotive in her singing. However, her technique is extremely flawed and always has been. An example of this is the slow degeneration of her upper register to the point where she can now belt higher than she can go in head voice/falsetto. Contrast this to Ally, who’s emotiveness and artistic expression in her singing has slowly waned over the years, but her technique has always been the best out of the 5H girls. The skill in which she can project and support her voice, combined with her strong head voice is proof of her being technically competent. That’s why she is often considered the better of the two. Out of everyone from 5H, Dinah encompasses the point made about Chloe and Perrie. Dinah is not quite as technically competent as Ally, or quite as emotive as Lauren, but she is the most well rounded out of all of them. She has adequate technique, incredible musicality, a strong belting range, a strong upper register, a good lower register (not in 5H, but as of the last 2 years), and excellent agility and creativity. Ally is a good vocalist, Lauren is a good singer, Dinah is both a good singer and a good vocalist. As far as the other two members go, I’d say Camila is both a decent singer and decent vocalist, and Normani is an average singer and inconsistently decent vocalist since her technique and creativity outside of her belting range can be adequate.
@@noahlol14spinach95 she has! She was able to support up to C#5 in the group’s early days, but her voice declined a lot further into the group. She and Dinah can both now support F#3-C5 and Ally from G#3-D5-G5 (HV). Camila supported G3-C#5 and Normani F3-Bb4 at their best but I’m not sure they still can.
I like your bit about still being able to critique singing despite the fact you may or may not sing better than x, y or z. True that! I was one of those people who cast this person's performance as amazing and then next person's performance as amazing, before learning about things like riffs and runs, belting and so on. If everyone's amazing then no one is. True that!
As a singer this helped me because I’d like to improve but it’s very hard not all of us can afford vocal coaches etc but for now I can just clarify like hey, I’m a singer not a vocalist and that’s okay! 💖
Ariana’s vocal technique since 2018 has always been great and one of the best ones out there. her support has extended up to E5 consistently (amazing), her agility is crazy, she can achieve riffs and runs without moving her jaw more and most of her tensions have disappeared etc etc.
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 Ariana Grande… horrible…? for most of her career…? she’s the best vocalist out of this generation along with Tori Kelly and JoJo and always been 😭💀
This was a great video! I have to say though now-a-days it’s hard to tell if anyone is actually vocally skilled or if it’s just prerecorded/loud backtracks. I am specifically talking about kpop which may be a completely different essay in itself I guess lol
I really just came here because of Morisette Amon at 5:28 cause damn she's both a singer and a vocalist and she's mora than excellent in it but she's underated and highly under appreciated. Sorry not sorry but she's probably better than half of those pop singers right now but I guess she won't get worldwide fame because she's a Filipina and I do believe that somehow the international scene is kind of racist towards Filipino singers eventhough they proved their worth, this already happened to Charice Pempengco Jessica Sanchez and probably a lot more that I could not remember. The only Filipinas I know who did make it in the international scene are Lea Salonga and Rachel Ann Go but they're on the performing side of music which is the broadway.
You MUST do a video ranking the new generation (only gen z or under 25 maybe??) there’s no video like that and I’m sure would be very interesting to watch/get maaany views, I wanted do it but sadly I don’t have time so I would love if someone could do it, here some names that I know: - Grace VanderWaal (2004) - Olivia Rodrigo (2003) - Rachel Zegler (2001) - Billie Eilish (2001) - Faouzia (2000) - Halle Bailey (2000) - Willow (2000) Some under 25s - Sabrina Carpenter (99) - Madison Beer (98) - Chloe Bailey (98) - Zara Larsson (97) If someone that is reading also have some other names from the gen z (born after 2000) or under 25 yo pls share here too
I’m not 100% familiarized with these voices but my #1 rank would came from these 3 girls (not sure about the positions) #3 Chloe Bailey: Looove her, my favorite from this gen bc of her tone/style. kinda of classic approach but doesn’t seem to have a wide developed voice and not that consistent (such as high belts above D) #2 Faouzia: I’ve only seem one or too performances so not that familiarized, she seems to be a lil inconsistent and have some tension going on bc of her tone modification (which annoys me bc sounds like a cartoon sometimes, like AVA max does and I personally hate) but she’s REALLY strong and has an amazing control and vibrato #1 Rachel Zegler: Shes SO good, did not watched that much from her too but she’s from theater so she’s is SO developed, her belts, vibrato, her voice is so free (besides some close vowels that she didn’t mastered yet like E) and imo she’s the most consistent BUT since she’s from theater lacks personality in her voice bc her focus is technique RECOMENDATION: The Wizard and I ua-cam.com/video/6G0Ed-tzgCI/v-deo.html and No One Mours the Wicked (bc of her head voice) ua-cam.com/video/vHuRUBLYriw/v-deo.html
Fatima. S I love desert rose, that’s the style she should stick with, in that type of song she’s just a DIVA, it seems (and sounds) that she’s been doing this for YEARS, like adele back in the day (but much better vocally) but now she’s trying some pop and it’s just a no for me
Those comments you receive are ignorant. You may not be a brilliant singer (I've never heard you sing, but this is just a general statement), but you know the background of it (technique, notes, etc) and you improve your knowledge.
I love your channel! I have a suggestion, how about you make a series of “Singer VS Singer” according to vocal technique, creativity, musicality, etc? I would love to hear your opinion!
Whether you're a singer or a vocalist, I think it's absolutely necessary for you to practice and warm up and take care of your voice. I remember Jennifer Hudson said a few years ago she doesn't even warm up before her shows, and to me it's a perfect example of taking your most precious instrument for granted lol, imagine if Ariana Grande did that. Same with singers. Taylor has improved SO MUCH it's unbelievable, but imagine if one day she just decided to stop taking her voice seriously. No matter how much natural talent you have, you need consistency to improve. It's okay to be good, it's okay to suck, what matters is that you work hard towards being better than you were yesterday.
I’m going to go ahead and disagree that Chloe is a better vocalist than Perrie and that’s not because I’m a Little Mix Stan. Perries voice is so dynamic and has a lot of power to it. She can range from Beyoncé to Broadway. Look up her videos without Little Mix she isn’t just a belter she has amazing technique. I feel that she isn’t recognized as much as Chloe. I love Chloe’s music and I hear it everywhere because we are in the States. Not a lot of people here have even heard of Perrie or Little Mix, but you can find a lot of people who know Chloe. I think once Perrie is officially solo, then we can really figure out who’s the better vocalist. To me, Perrie reminds me of Kelly Clarkson. Both powerhouse voices who have such range. I feel like Jade would be a better comparison vs Chloe. But I would choose Jade too because I’m a ride or die 💅🏻😂
I’m a vocalist for a living, hired to sing all genres including opera, and I have a feeling Billie Eilish is a vocalist as well, it’s just that in her youth she’s showcasing the side of herself that she thinks people want to see. She’s not comfortable exploring a wider range of vocal pallets yet, but from what I hear the foundation of technique is there more so than it is with Adele and WAY more than Halsey. Her vibrato is natural and healthy and her tone is consistently pure, I think she could extract the breathiness if she wanted to, I’ve even heard her do it before in certain songs.
@@quicktingz2097 that’s something that’s unfortunately caused by her current style, if she continues with it into adulthood and doesn’t try different pallets it’ll have negative lasting damage to her tone and range in the same way it has for Britney Spears, all of that breathiness and vocal frying isn’t healthy
I don't care about technic if the performance has no soul. Taylor Swift is not a vocalist at all, but her music makes me cry or exited or put a smile on my face because it's simply good without massive runs, belting or whatever. I call a singer amazing because of the whole presence
yes! more certainly! as someone who is endeavouring to become a proficient vocalist your content for me is always helpfully rounded and informative, thank you :)!
A lot of vocalist have over pushed their limits though. Just recently more vocalists are taking care of their instruments better (Beyoncé and Ariana come to mind to me since they both seem to be improving from debut) I think this stems from Mariah Carey’s vocal deterioration and Whitney’s use of drugs deteriorating her voice as well. But they toured continuously and had no breaks whole singing some of the hardest songs ever .
@@lunalovesmuch very good point with Perrie. she used to not know her limits but that’s just one of the many things she’s improved on. She now knows her limits and works on the things that need improvement on.
Using Morisette Amon as an example of a great belter is just on point. She wasn't called the "Phoenix" of the Philippines despite of the multiple excellent vocalists in this country for nothing.
the term "vocalist" also applies to people that experiment vocally without it necessarily having to be something technically correct or advanced, something requiring more ability, its just a broader term. someone screaming incoherently and making peculiar voices should also be considered a vocalist. A vocalist is merely the person that does the vocals.
To a certain extent I feel like you do need to have experience and credibility in producing certain sounds and executing specific techniques in order to provide highly technical and instruction-oriented feedback. But the commentary on this channel never attempts to go beyond analysis for entertainment purposes. Aka yall need to chill, your favs will survive.
Oof that last bit I feel that with my soul I remember during the get weird tour Little mix performed lightning and if you know that song you know the extremely hard note perrie has to hit And In the beginning of the tour she did it flawlessly and it sounded great but a little bit past the middle it started to sound like she was in pain forcing out that note I commented that maybe perrie should either dodge the note or have all of them harmonize together so it’s not as hard on perrie because that could damage her voice (and low and behold it did thank god she got enough vocal rest but still) So then you have toxic mixers coming along saying shit like “you can’t do any better so shut up” or “you’re just mad she’s better than your faves” (even tho little mix is my favorite gg of all time) and like you said my favorite “I bet you sound like garbage she could ousting you at her worst and you at your best” ( no doubt she could but fuck me for being concerned for her voice ig) People like that are the reason why vocal criticism is always seen as an attack
I had an argument with some people about singer vs vocalist there was a video of Chris brown and Avery Wilson and other rnb singers and I commented Avery Wilson would sing all of them under that table they didn't even give avery enough screen time ☠️ that's why I said that and people kept going back n forth with me saying but Chris brown is rich and famous and has a lot of hits and I said yes But Avery is a better vocalist
Ok im going to be completely honest here… I think at this point in her career unless her vocals prove me wrong on her masterclass, current Mariah is a better vocalist than singer. I mean let’s think about it; her vocal abilities are obviously still there as she still has a solid technique, incredible agility, creativity etc. but her tone now just is not great. On the big latto remix for example… her tone on that fantasy verse was very shrill and nasal sounding… but she was able to showcase her ability to do everything that she did with her voice on the original fantasy record. If her tone on this master class is like it was on the remix, then I’ll have proven my point. I also think that if her tone remains this way, that it may be a sign for her to retire the singing aspect of her career (or at least the higher belting) because like I said about if her tone is still shrill sounding, then it just doesn’t sound good anymore.
Actually right now she's a better singer than a technician. The tone is because she's hiding her natural tone. Look up stay the night live. That's closer to her actual tone now. But Mariah doesn't open her throat enough to allow that tone to come out.
I agree that her tone is not the best right now. It was so much better between '18-early '21. I think Mariah is still an excellent vocalist who simply cannot do upper belts and super high keys anymore. That's all - she must let it go. If she lowers the keys to her songs and rearrange the vocal arrangements, she can pull them off. Also, the creation of more songs using her lower to mid range would allow her current voice to shine so much more. Like Toni Braxton/Brandy level keys and vocal arrangements for example...I think she would do great here
@@takemyhand1988 I think her Hero/Joy to the world performance is more of her actual tone than anything. It sounds so much fuller and nothing sounds nasally. However I definitely agree that she doesn’t open her throat enough.
The reason behind her tone alterations is actually very simple: Mariah is mostly changing her approach in order to sound like she used to, when she was younger but she can't do this due to both, voice damage and natural voice lowering (most probably due to pregnancies and miscarriages), Mariah is aware her voice isn't the same but she's trying to save the day with high larynx and nasality, hence her tone sounds extremely weird and unnatural. She's basically a mezzo-soprano now, trying to apply same principles as she did in 1996. But during Daydream era her voice wasn't damaged and sounded relatively natural, bright, girly and free, while her current tone is constricted, nasal, shrill and annoying (at least for me it is), I'd rather prefer Mariah singing with her more natural tone aka 2017 and Vegas rather than trying to restore what's completely gone for now OR restore her voice completely via undergoing vocal surgery and vocal therapy for, like, a year or something. She has her options but she's not gonna do it in my opinion. But who knows, she might one day...
@@lightning0506 So true, the whisper singing and nasally tone she put on during daydream era is not working for her anymore. She sounds really good when she sticks to mid belts and doesn’t do too much whisper singing.
SO NICE SEEING MORISSETTE ON HERE. HOPE YOU CAN ALSO LOOK INTO REGINE. SHE IS THE ROOT OF IT ALL! SHE SET THE STANDARD! HER PLACEMENT IS SOMETIMES NOT AS PALATABLE TO WESTERN AUDIENCES (PRIMARILY CULTURAL DIFFERENCE) BUT I HAVE HEARD BOTH MORISSETTE AND REGINE LIVE PLENTY OF TIMES, REGINE IS ALMOST A SENIOR CITIZEN BUT HER VOICE IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL!
Wait, so basically another singer that UNDERRATED like Faouzia, Yebba, AURORA are like full package of Singer and Vocalist. Aurora with her stunning Gesture and emotion is not only singer, she's ART in this blind industry.
I think Yebba is a total artist/singer but even though I LOVE Faouzia I think she still needs to develop an artist sound that doesn't sound generic. She's an incredible vocalist though and a musician so I'm sure in a few years she will become a total artist. I will check out Aurora :)
I think demi in general lost in the 4some competition since 2016 to Ariana, Tori and Jessie J. All got solid techniques while they (demi) didn‘t keep up.
Enjoyment of Music is personal and subjective. Analysis of Katz is useful for the sake of improving our knowledge and understanding music better. It's especially useful for singers and vocalists who want to improve.
She is a naturally blessed vocalist. She's not an amazing songwriter but she moves people with her amazing timbre and emotions when she sings. I love her!
That’s because Mariah Carey’s mother was an opera singer. That’s where she had gotten some of her training from. When it comes to Christina Aguilera over sings her songs. Kelly Clarkson was on American Idol. And they probably had some of the best vocal coaches on that show. Beyoncé Knowles was singing in the church choir. And she had an good vocal coach. So did the rest of the members of Destiny’s Child. All of the Destiny’s Child members were singing in the church choir. Most of these younger singers don’t even have too much musical training because they had gotten rid of that part from the record companies. Nowadays, the record companies just look for who is the most popular singers and performers on social media
I understand that some people might feel irritated and question why you're making videos in which you compare singers, vocalists, etc. but c'mon.. this is entertainment and you speaking your mind. There's nothing wrong about with it and you simply share your knowledge. I watched 3 videos by now and there wasn't any bashing or putting one on a throne just to shove others through dirt. If people don't like this content, they don't need to keep watching. Just keep going and do your thing! :)
I definitely don't have any problem with criticism/ It's definitely important to critique things and everyone has a right to share their opinions. It just doesn't need to veer into every critic thinking that only they can be right about whatever they are critiquing, and everyone else who disagrees or sees or hears something different, is wrong. I highly doubt that all vocal coaches have the same opinion on every vocalist they've all ever heard sing. I think it can be dangerous when anyone is unwilling to hear a different perspective and sees their own viewpoint as more valuable than any other person's viewpoint. There are a lot of critics out there, not just of music, but of movies, tv, etc., who tend to treat their own take on these things as gospel, and anyone who opposes them is wrong. That's something else, I think we should acknowledge because that's not how criticism can work, either.
The question is… what do u prefer to listen live a very good singer that isn’t a particularly good vocalist or a Very good vocalist who sounds emotional-less or as some would say lacks “soul”. Id much rather listen to the first, though it’s absolutely undeniable if u are already “soulful” u can only get better with better vocal technique
Great comment, thank you!

GREAT comment! Thank you!
THIS COMMENT RIGHT HERE!!!
I wish every fandom had this mindset towards their own favs as well as other singers they dislike.
100% true! They are both insanely talented, there is space for both of them regardless of which areas they excel in
Beyoncé IS A GREAT SONGWRITER
I've seen people critizise soccer players and no one gets butthurt about it. But when a singer gets critizised...
I would not say Nina had an average voice, but yes I agree with your sentiments!!
Billie Holiday immediately came to mind.
@@veem8497billie was a vocalist wait a minute yall we are losing the plot
Omg Kelly's version is so smooth and emotional! Loved it!
I know her tone was so freaking pretty on that song!
Timeless voice I can’t believe I saw her win Idol back in the day
she needs to raise the key, she can't even sing her own song
Taking a slightly out of tune snippet by C.A. was a little unfair...
@@KittyTsundere You think Ed Sheeran is a better singer than The Weeknd? That’s interesting.
@@KittyTsundere
It’s clear you aren’t informed about their vocal abilities none of them are underdeveloped and Ed isn’t the best out of them, but I’ll examine their techniques a bit closer to perhaps see what you mean.
1. She uses her emotions to sing
2. She knows how to arrange the song in the best way.
3. Her vocals always fit the songs she's singing
4. She always deliver the vocals in the best way depending on the song type, genre and style.
5. Speaking of style she always styles out everything (her runs, melody, tone, belts and vocals)
6. She's always focusing to have a spectacular and amazing vocals.
7. She's always been technical to all of her belts, Whistles and any other part of her vocals.
8. She had a great breath support, resonance, support, projection, runs etcand she always try to be tension free as much as possible.
9. she is a a very well rounded vocalist and singer
Ariana is also a perfect example of being both:
as a singer she can deliver a very emotional performance which happens more than it should to her after all what happened to her, so she can really put her emotions out naturally so it sounds so real and raw (ofc)
as a vocalist, she just has it all now
- agility
- tehnique
- support up to F5
- resonance on mid belts
- good lows for such a high pitched voice, she can change the tone as well (like in Save Your Tears)
- creativity (litteraly every single Sweetener Tour performance has at least 20 new vocals, her songs are way better live vocally (breathin's Bb5s and C6s, no tears left to cry's A5s, god is a woman's Bb6s, G#6s and F#6s, Be Alright's G#5s and way more)
- she has the range (from C#3 (i think, bc a lot people heard in some of her songs to belting up to C6(she was playing with her voice but still) to Eb7 (she probably can go higher)
- she knows her voice extremely well
She she does all those hard songs and vocals while constantly dancing and moving, for hours...
...and even better is that she is constantly improving and working on her voice which is also proven by the fact that she is even better after all these high notes live over the years instead of losing her voice
she's truly the vocalist of our generation .

Ailee vs Taeyeon is a good comparison, true!
Actually imo i do thing IU and Ailee would be better comparation, IU herself has a not very good technique but she's a good songwriter/singer
I think that Christina Aguilera have a huge potential but she just choose not studied vocal technic. She prefer to be like more a passional singer and artist than a vocalist, but i personally think that she could be both, with technic the singer have more tools to express feelings. I'm sorry for my broken english!!
Vocalist, singer or both, I think anyone who uses their voice for music should have good technique.
I would love for more essay-style videos like this to come. Those are my favorite because I love learning and analyzing vocal techniques.
i think in kpop vocals are a huge after thought and the fact that so many ppl say "well not everyone can be a main vocalist" kinda takes away the point in trying to be a better vocalist in general. you don't have to strive to be the best at something to be good at it or even enjoy it...

Concuerdo totalmente.
Finally someone that agees that Adele is NOT a vocalist lol. I love Adele, but her voice is okay. Her music is amazing. I find that people hate on Beyoncé and say Adele is a better vocalist when that’s far from the truth. She’s just a way better song writer.

Ppl usually think talent comes first but talent is the PRODUCT of what u mentioned: practice, time, effort

"If everyone is great, then no one is" true and that can apply to anything
@@matteobuda9430 I think Lauren has started supporting C5 again!
I completely agree!! Please make more about specific singers!!!
Ariana has not always been great. She was HORRID for most of her career. Let’s not lie. But she’s getting better, thankfully.

You MUST do a video ranking the new generation (only gen z or under 25 maybe??) there’s no video like that and I’m sure would be very interesting to watch/get maaany views, I wanted do it but sadly I don’t have time so I would love if someone could do it, here some names that I know:
- Grace VanderWaal (2004)
- Olivia Rodrigo (2003)
- Rachel Zegler (2001)
- Billie Eilish (2001)
- Faouzia (2000)
- Halle Bailey (2000)
- Willow (2000)
Some under 25s
- Sabrina Carpenter (99)
- Madison Beer (98)
- Chloe Bailey (98)
- Zara Larsson (97)
If someone that is reading also have some other names from the gen z (born after 2000) or under 25 yo pls share here too
I’m not 100% familiarized with these voices but my #1 rank would came from these 3 girls (not sure about the positions)
#3 Chloe Bailey: Looove her, my favorite from this gen bc of her tone/style. kinda of classic approach but doesn’t seem to have a wide developed voice and not that consistent (such as high belts above D)
#2 Faouzia: I’ve only seem one or too performances so not that familiarized, she seems to be a lil inconsistent and have some tension going on bc of her tone modification (which annoys me bc sounds like a cartoon sometimes, like AVA max does and I personally hate) but she’s REALLY strong and has an amazing control and vibrato
#1 Rachel Zegler: Shes SO good, did not watched that much from her too but she’s from theater so she’s is SO developed, her belts, vibrato, her voice is so free (besides some close vowels that she didn’t mastered yet like E) and imo she’s the most consistent BUT since she’s from theater lacks personality in her voice bc her focus is technique
RECOMENDATION: The Wizard and I ua-cam.com/video/6G0Ed-tzgCI/v-deo.html and No One Mours the Wicked (bc of her head voice) ua-cam.com/video/vHuRUBLYriw/v-deo.html
@@imaginevocals400 omg you need to get more acquainted with Faouzia. She’s incredible
Fatima. S I love desert rose, that’s the style she should stick with, in that type of song she’s just a DIVA, it seems (and sounds) that she’s been doing this for YEARS, like adele back in the day (but much better vocally) but now she’s trying some pop and it’s just a no for me

This intro woooow
I love how dedicated you are to these videos
the SAVAGE intro!! that got me hyped

You have one of the best content on here. Period
I love your channel! I have a suggestion, how about you make a series of “Singer VS Singer” according to vocal technique, creativity, musicality, etc? I would love to hear your opinion!
Oooh this video is a different level of greatness ‼️
Intro is 🔥😱🔥😱
One of my favorite videos I have ever seen - PERIOD ‼️💯
THANK YOU! I'm overwhelmed with the positive feedback!!
I've always enjoyed listening to vocalists but your videos gave me a new appreciation / interest in this craft. Love ur videos keep it up!!
But I would choose Jade too because I’m a ride or die 💅🏻😂
i love your videos so much, you have such great input and i’ve learned so much!!
yes we want more videos like this !❤
I’m a vocalist for a living, hired to sing all genres including opera, and I have a feeling Billie Eilish is a vocalist as well, it’s just that in her youth she’s showcasing the side of herself that she thinks people want to see.
Yeah, I also think she does it on purpose due to her taste
I've heard her "belt" in one of her latest live performances and her range wasn't that great. Very pretty voice though.
@@uhuhuh1966 Some of the new pop singers take breathiness too far. Generally, I don’t like baby voices coming from women. It diminishes them.
@@itzel1735 agreed, men do it too
I don't care about technic if the performance has no soul. Taylor Swift is not a vocalist at all, but her music makes me cry or exited or put a smile on my face because it's simply good without massive runs, belting or whatever. I call a singer amazing because of the whole presence
OR YOUR STANDARDS are pretty low lolxxx. the simplest explanations are the truest ones.
I do think it’s hard to compare Chloe & Perrie as they are 2 different vocal types …..
But TRUE 💯
I definitely understand with video, I also under the comments you talked about at the end. They make sense a lot actually.💀
The restaurant analogy was everything for me. I just may use it 😂 Bravo 👏🏼

Definitely this is my favourite video of your channel. Good work! ❤
omg thank you thank you
I think what also counts to being a good vocalist is knowing the limits and not overpushing it
A lot of vocalist have over pushed their limits though.
Yeah, I agree. When I wrote this, I had Perrie in mind especially with the Get Weird Tour.
@@lunalovesmuch very good point with Perrie. she used to not know her limits but that’s just one of the many things she’s improved on. She now knows her limits and works on the things that need improvement on.
wow thank you so much for your effort !! i really needed to hear this.
Using Morisette Amon as an example of a great belter is just on point. She wasn't called the "Phoenix" of the Philippines despite of the multiple excellent vocalists in this country for nothing.
Okay, but can we talk about the intro?😎💁🏽♂👌🏼
That restaurant analogy was sooooo on point!
the term "vocalist" also applies to people that experiment vocally without it necessarily having to be something technically correct or advanced, something requiring more ability, its just a broader term. someone screaming incoherently and making peculiar voices should also be considered a vocalist.
Oof that last bit I feel that with my soul
I remember during the get weird tour
Little mix performed lightning and if you know that song you know the extremely hard note perrie has to hit
And In the beginning of the tour she did it flawlessly and it sounded great but a little bit past the middle it started to sound like she was in pain forcing out that note
I commented that maybe perrie should either dodge the note or have all of them harmonize together so it’s not as hard on perrie because that could damage her voice (and low and behold it did thank god she got enough vocal rest but still)
So then you have toxic mixers coming along saying shit like “you can’t do any better so shut up” or “you’re just mad she’s better than your faves” (even tho little mix is my favorite gg of all time) and like you said my favorite “I bet you sound like garbage she could ousting you at her worst and you at your best” ( no doubt she could but fuck me for being concerned for her voice ig)
People like that are the reason why vocal criticism is always seen as an attack
I appreciate your thoughts, interesting to think about
I had an argument with some people about
singer vs vocalist
there was a video of Chris brown and Avery Wilson and other rnb singers
and I commented Avery Wilson would sing all of them under that table
they didn't even give avery enough screen time ☠️ that's why I said that
and people kept going back n forth with me
saying but Chris brown is rich and famous and has a lot of hits
and I said yes
But Avery is a better vocalist
Avery could sing Chris underneath the table. Most definitely.
Both are good singers and vocalist but Avery is better tbh lol
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 I am a fan of both but I agree tbh lol

When people is losing when arguing about quality, they will bring up the quantity aspect 👌
The reason behind her tone alterations is actually very simple:
Mariah is mostly changing her approach in order to sound like she used to, when she was younger but she can't do this due to both, voice damage and natural voice lowering (most probably due to pregnancies and miscarriages), Mariah is aware her voice isn't the same but she's trying to save the day with high larynx and nasality, hence her tone sounds extremely weird and unnatural.
Your opinions are accurate and actually in line with the current knowledge. Kudos ✌️

Enjoyment of Music is personal and subjective. Analysis of Katz is useful for the sake of improving our knowledge and understanding music better.
It's especially useful for singers and vocalists who want to improve.
Every one for example always talks about Christina Aguilera and her bad technique, but my heart melts every time she sings
You should’ve put Lara Fabian’s rendition of IWALY. Best rendition of that song besides Whitney’s.
periodt showing mariah when you talk about vocalists, the ULTIMATE vocalist
I understand that some people might feel irritated and question why you're making videos in which you compare singers, vocalists, etc. but c'mon.. this is entertainment and you speaking your mind. There's nothing wrong about with it and you simply share your knowledge. I watched 3 videos by now and there wasn't any bashing or putting one on a throne just to shove others through dirt. If people don't like this content, they don't need to keep watching. Just keep going and do your thing! :)

Interesting topic!
