I see wrath as consistently pushing and forcing your voice in order to get an aggressive sound to the point where it causes severe damage, especially in songs where you need to express anger. I also imagine this happening when a singer tries to blow everyone away with a powerful vocal performance after being criticized for being vocally weak but it kind of backfires.
Was about to say the same thing you made a great and excellent point and example i think wrath is everything you said for a example i would to throw in beyonce I've noticed over the years her has gotten very aggressive and adopted vocal techniques like growl to really emphasize it i feel like you can tell someone is being wrathful with their songs is when it feels they're beating the song or the listener with their voice or if they're putting their whole body and soul into a song aggressively so you feel usually their emotional pain in a song put to have vocal wrath i don't feel like the song has to have sad or angry emotions i feel like I've felt wrath vocals in songs that are supposed to be happy or upbeat i also feel like it vocal wrath either comes from a little bit of greed or pain i think this can be done well but of not careful can come off as too much or to aggressive i feel like vocal wrath is also used as tool to get a point emotional point across i think this is either to prove the singers vocal ability or to get a point across a song or sometimes a singer could be try to accomplish both at the same time i think it can be used to tell a great emotional story in a song(again if done well)but like you said if feel like it can used to just shut up haters and i also think that if done wrong can expose a singers inner insecurities(i have a lot more to say and add but I'll stop it here sorry 4 length just hope i got point across well if u disagree or just want 2 add something I'd love to here it also real quick i want to add miley cyrus just because i feel like her vocal style can be quit aggressive but not saying this vocal is bad like i said this vocal technique can be good if used right)
Yeah, Like Xtina, or Jade Thirlwall. Forms of untechnical vocal aggression combined with overperforming, maybe paired with an inconsistent level of energy throughout the performance. Like, they really get into the climax and end up doing too much, but end up falling off afterward and underperforming for the rest of it.

Vocal wrath: being too vocally ambitious for your skills, singing beyond your range, forcing vocal dynamics that you aren't really skilled at, lack of control and insisting on doing those despite the risk of damage {sloppy runs, forced unhealthy growls, pitchy high notes etc} (Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, J Hud, Jessica Simpson, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Ailee, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Holiday).
miley used to be very vocally correct back when she was on disney, i remember one of her performances of these four walls blowing me away as a kid, i rewatched it years later and its still amazing to me. same with just a girl. nowadays her voice is different and she keeps on saying she doesnt vocally train, she just goes with the flow. i think she's forcing her voice too much, and many times it's very unpleasant to listen to, especially some covers. and her vibrato isn't good. i know she doesn't care, considering the bangerz tour was her just literally screaming and barely trying to sing. it's a shame cause she's a great artist and her tone is so unique. i totally see her in the wrath category.
Ailee’s technique is incredible though. Would rather include Ariana Grande and especially Demi Lovato. I’m so surprised that especially Demi isn’t included as an example, because they are literally the prime example for not knowing their limits and straining the crap out of their vocals 🥺
Haha I actually like Christina Aguilera’s stormy weather rendition and thought it was pretty tame and tasteful, I honestly was expecting you to use the Christmas song when she was professionally recorded in her debut era and Ron was in the piano 😂😂😂 it’s a meme now. Love your videos!

Lastly, I thought that I was the only one who found overly lustful and unnecessarily sexual performances to be cringey at best and distasteful at worse. Sensuality does not always equate with sexiness.
An incredibly well done video!!! Loved and agreed with every point you made!!! However, I think a lot of Mariah’s pride can be attributed to the MASSIVE amount of pressure she’s put under through the ridiculous expectation of people for her to perform and execute her nigh-impossible songs the same way she did in her 20s. And whenever she can’t reach that caliber, whether it be sickness or her nodules acting up, she immediately gets told that she’s washed up and needs to retire. You made incredible points about seeking a vocal coach and adapting to their changing instruments, keep up the good work!!!❤️❤️
Filipinos are gifted singers, but they have a hard time discovering or making their artistry shine. It's either because of the heavy imposition by the producers on how singers should sound like or their lack of technical musical education. Filipino ruling class (which owns the media and everything to do with arts), don't deserve these people. It's a country where they figuratively bury talented artists.
Management and the record executives are poor at promoting Filipino singers abroad including in the USA 🇺🇸, where I live, and in Canada 🇨🇦, where I frequently visit. Eumee Capile and Jaya Mitchell moved to the USA. 🇺🇸 Hopefully, this will help them grow an audience.
For me 'wrath' would be performing too aggressively in both technique and delivery, having no dynamics. There are songs which call for delivering powerful vocals or intense sentiments, but there are other times, even in the same song, in which you have to pull back and work with the music, to give delicate or "whispery" vocals. I feel that when vocalists disregard this it kills the whole up and down of a song.
I would agree and as a die-hard Beyonce fan I would also say that sometimes she fits into this category. Her Sasha fierce sometimes gets to be a bit too much, although she is such an incredible vocalist that these times are rare and even when they happen, she still sounds amazing
Mel from PCD sung the song how it was recorded tho. However, her riffs and runs in the original song were still unnecessary and random. But if you’re given 15 seconds to sing on 1 song out of the million of songs Nicole is solely singing on I’ll make those 15 secs my moment too.

Thank you for the video. A lot of the points caught my attention. Now I kinda see why I couldn’t stan a vocalist for too long until I discovered Taeyeon about 2 years ago. When she sings, she does just enough, especially live, to convey the essence and emotion of the song and I appreciate her for that. It shows that she respects the song more than trying to show off, and even more in duets. Maybe it’s because she’s in a group so she knows how to collaborate well or it’s just her personality.
For me Wrath could be singers trying extremely powerful vocals using drives/vocal distortion when they clearly lack the experience and the technical skills to do it safely. And even when they DO possess the Skills, they use like there is no tomorrow. Purely relying on "emotions" for that sake, sacrificing their own voices and the overall performance. Examples: Xtina, Miley Cyrus, Lana del Rey...
Wrath: singers that are "reckless" vocally. I'm thinking aggression, phrasing, loud in your face vocal delivery. This can also include lack of vocal dynamics and only utilising a belt-y, raw and loud sound. Think rock n roll with the intention to burn the stage and possibly the artist's vocal chords. Chesty belts, growls+distortion, lowered larynx, reckless delivery, straining, big lungs and sound. Eg: Xtina- fighter, Miley Cyrus ( ua-cam.com/video/JkVqABct1JA/v-deo.html at 2:50 ), Siyakha Khithaza - ngangingazi (ua-cam.com/video/YHyeIvbGGCM/v-deo.html at 8:29) Jennifer Hudson & Jessie J titanium ( ua-cam.com/video/ajW8mEzsV8I/v-deo.html at 3:29), Little mix- lighting (ua-cam.com/video/Oh5aTVnGC5w/v-deo.html at 8:23) & power(ua-cam.com/video/VWwdCAyUwrM/v-deo.html at 4:23 it was tastefully done tho), The 4- wolves ( ua-cam.com/video/SFuW6lfMhVA/v-deo.html at 2:07 evvie mckinney), etc. The examples given do not necessarily apply but hopefully they'll give you a general idea what *wrath* gives
Maybe Wrath could be the lyrics of a song, particularly breakups or harsh raps, and how the performer/audience reacts to it...I don't know, I had an idea with Taylor Swift's and Eminem's past lyrics but it fizzled out...
Let’s just appreciate how honest and accurate this guy is, since the beginning of his video making… he never clickbaited us and always spreaded honest and pure opinions. 🧡
I would say that Wrath could be singer’s who mess up a hard vocal, and then continuously try harder and harder to hit the notes in their next performances while it’s only getting worse and worse because they are getting angry and sloppy.
I was about to comment this until I read your comment, her studio versions don’t have too much over singing and the same thing happens in her live performances… all the extra stuff she adds is so flavourful and nice, it’s not overdone and definitely never underwhelming, she always sing better than the studio versions…but does it in an enough amount. She has all the aspects in check.
Hey , When I sing I don't know if the notes are "supported" (I use the term support as an umbrella term which means a note without tension or in any case relatively almost non-existent, with the right laryngeal position etc) or not. Is there a way to tell if they are or not?
I know I’ve already commented but Rihannas technique to dodge vocals actually made me laugh at least she’s honest, she could’ve lip synced but just decides not to sing those parts and let her fans do it.
If Gluttony were to changed to be about people who do too many runs and ad libs specifically, I think wrath could apply to someone who shouts or yells too much in their singing. It can work great in certain contexts but take someone like Lewis Capaldi who sings like he's shouting even in a context where it doesn't make sense. That's all I have got lol.
Im a Filipino and Im not really a fan of Mori because she's unoriginal.. her tone is not natural, it changes depending on the song because she tries to imitate the actual tone of the original singer.. Her vocal break is also intentional and doesnt come out naturally just like Sia or Mariah.
My submissions for "Wrath", don't st3@l: ua-cam.com/video/ZMNUkh9NY_8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Q3wtXN8ceRY/v-deo.htmlm44s ua-cam.com/video/ZBw0NuPlyxU/v-deo.html Nah but fr, I think it would be interesting to cover singers who strong arm their way out of beautiful subtle qualities you can hear in studio versions. This is usually a matter of timbre for me. My top singers for this are Kelis and Jill Scott. Honorable mention to Aaliyah and Chaka Khan sometimes. All of them have sublime studio vocals with timbres coincidentally involving high larynx and breathiness, the latter often to the point of orgasmically vulnerable phonation onset delays. Kelis: Listen to Millionaire, Get Along with You, and Hooch studio vs. live. She has this sublime strident aspirate rasp arising from this very natural sounding glottal aperture that is reminiscent of slight vocal nodules. With a higher larynx position in the studio, it sounds like designer, high-end phone sex. Live, she has this lowered larynx, nasalance, and "booming" labially rounded vowel posture that contextualizes this same rasp as a kind of hoarseness. It's compelling, but feels more like distortion byproduct of aggression than this effortless, crumbly texture in studio. Jill Scott: Slowly Surely studio vs. live. Her larynx is Britney high but contextualizes as a more thematically diminutive and plaintive cooing than Britney's pop production hyperfeminine fantasy. Live, she steamrolls that siren sweetness, replacing it with a starkly contrastive knodel and low larynx that she goes to a bit too often.
Maybe Vocal Wrath will be being hard on yourself because of any vocal limitations. And damaging your voice in the process of getting it to be something it’s naturally not.
Could you pls include more men also in your vids? I mean there are good pop male artists, Shawn Mendes, Michael Jackson, Harry Styles, John Legend, and many more
Dodging notes are not lazy or sloppy to me, if you don't feel like to sing them or even if your voice is not good for it. Lazy to me would be to not even caring about singing the song at all...but it's my opinion♡
Hi idk if you will see this but like I trust u with my life when it comes to vocal Analysis, so I have a question has Ariana grade regressed as a vocalist? I’ve seen so many people say she has. What’s your opinion
You should do videos about female artists that were not included in this the channel just yet like Joss Stone, Jordin Sparks, Natasha Bedingfield, Taylor Dayne, and LeAnn Rimes.
I just wanna say the one with the pussycat dolls where Melody takes the stage was her (and the other dolls) being fed up with always being pushed to the back and never being allowed to show they can sing too because all attention always had to be on Nicole. This was her 'fuck you' moment to being basically a glorified backup dancer to Nicole.
U should react to girls by aespa, i wanna hear your opinions about their high notes and if u feel like they are straining their voice- i don't agree but yeah xd
The Melody vs Nicole showdown will ALWAYS be epic to me!!! Melody embodied YOU NOT GONNA USE ME TO BE SINGING HOOKS..WHAT I LOOK LIKE, PATTI LABELLE OR SOMEBODY (#LadiesNight). Now if she could have just landed all of those runs she attempted to execute...🥴
May i juat say how unsatified i was with chloe with her and her sister’s recent performance. It was indeed lustful. It was less vocals and just more of her just dancing and whatever else she was doing. Honestly they set a standard for me with their tiny desk performance an she was emotional with that perfomance but wasnt pverdoing it.imo Edit: what on earth was that “i’ll be there” performance?😢
I'm as lamb as they come but I totally agree that Mariah could totally do better if she worked with a proper vocal coach. Her difficult relationship with her mother, who was her first vocal coach, has something to do with it I believe.
Even this day I still don't like that cover of Stormy Weather. I remember watching my tv set like that is not how that song is supposed to be sung. Wrath could be overly passionate vocals or overly aggressive vocals. This is very creative. I never looked at it like this before.
Morissette has naturally thick tone but also she can change it to lighter one if she wants to. If only this world is awake of how talented Morissette is.

Eg: Xtina- fighter, Miley Cyrus ( ua-cam.com/video/JkVqABct1JA/v-deo.html at 2:50 ), Siyakha Khithaza - ngangingazi (ua-cam.com/video/YHyeIvbGGCM/v-deo.html at 8:29) Jennifer Hudson & Jessie J titanium ( ua-cam.com/video/ajW8mEzsV8I/v-deo.html at 3:29), Little mix- lighting (ua-cam.com/video/Oh5aTVnGC5w/v-deo.html at 8:23) & power(ua-cam.com/video/VWwdCAyUwrM/v-deo.html at 4:23 it was tastefully done tho), The 4- wolves ( ua-cam.com/video/SFuW6lfMhVA/v-deo.html at 2:07 evvie mckinney), etc. The examples given do not necessarily apply but hopefully they'll give you a general idea what *wrath* gives
Ailee's part on that GREED was something else...
🤣🤣🤣😂It was so manic!
Maybe you could do the seven virtues next 💛
Also this concept 😱😱😱
I would say that Wrath could be singer’s who mess up a hard vocal, and then continuously try harder and harder to hit the notes in their next performances while it’s only getting worse and worse because they are getting angry and sloppy.
Jessie j always trying to prove a point and demi😏😏😏
I think Ariana Grande is the best example of a great pop vocal, she is very balanced in all points you said in this video
just wow
I was about to comment this until I read your comment, her studio versions don’t have too much over singing and the same thing happens in her live performances… all the extra stuff she adds is so flavourful and nice, it’s not overdone and definitely never underwhelming, she always sing better than the studio versions…but does it in an enough amount. She has all the aspects in check.
Another hit from you good job u have good ears👍☺ I've noticed a few of these myself so glad you gave them a name so cool😎
Oh wow 🎉
The intro. Is fire 🔥
I don't know how you came up with this idea, but is very creative
Hey , When I sing I don't know if the notes are "supported" (I use the term support as an umbrella term which means a note without tension or in any case relatively almost non-existent, with the right laryngeal position etc) or not. Is there a way to tell if they are or not?
a supported note feels strong, steady and controlled. an unsupported note feels uncomfortable and tight, often times breathy or painful
Loved this!
4:38 ailee… gurl…💀
I know I’ve already commented but Rihannas technique to dodge vocals actually made me laugh at least she’s honest, she could’ve lip synced but just decides not to sing those parts and let her fans do it.
I just love these video essays! :)h
I love your content 💕💕💕
I've been watching your videos for years and they get better and better! If you have ideas for more essays don't hesitate and share them 😍
I anticipated Chloe on lust...
Loved this video! I love this channel ♥
I loved this
I feel like mariah's and tori's duets were giving and considerate.
Your vids are always really unique and smart 👌🏼
as the 667th liked user i thoroughly enjoyed it! including jessie j and melody from pcd are very ON point
How could you not use Beyoncé in the greed portion? She used to do the MOST in duet performances & while in destiny’s child
4:22 help at first we all thought she was alone
Perhaps wrath could be singers being destructive to their voices by really bad technique and being inconsiderate of how the sound….?
wrath = overly chesty and pushy?
so like really aggressive vocals that will destroy your voice but its "soulful"
@@jarhead6870 exactly!

*Hold on boe I'mma let you finish* to the whole new level 💀
If Gluttony were to changed to be about people who do too many runs and ad libs specifically, I think wrath could apply to someone who shouts or yells too much in their singing. It can work great in certain contexts but take someone like Lewis Capaldi who sings like he's shouting even in a context where it doesn't make sense. That's all I have got lol.
what MV or groups is in 1:02 and 9:09????

Sooo cool!!!
Definitely Morissette is great in imitating. Thanks for pointing it out.
Im a Filipino and Im not really a fan of Mori because she's unoriginal.. her tone is not natural, it changes depending on the song because she tries to imitate the actual tone of the original singer.. Her vocal break is also intentional and doesnt come out naturally just like Sia or Mariah.
I haven’t started watching the video yet but I already knew Mori’s Runaway would be in Gluttony. 😭
It's run to you
Same I think Mori's run to you is okay though mori just having fun for me💀

Nah but fr, I think it would be interesting to cover singers who strong arm their way out of beautiful subtle qualities you can hear in studio versions.
Xtina looks cool in that thumbnail lol
Destiny’s Child is greed all the way
Anybody know the intro music?
aespa- savage (instrumental)
You're the only reason I even remember xtina exists
omg ailee what was that TT lmao
Morissette the best
U should react to girls by aespa, i wanna hear your opinions about their high notes and if u feel like they are straining their voice- i don't agree but yeah xd
I think Jake Zyrus (pre-transition) would've been a better example of someone who imitates Whitney. He'd only let go of it after coming out.
2:54 this mic has TERRIBLE TUNING
What song do you use at the beginning / in between chapters
Scream by dreamcatcher
Please use Hyolyn in your videos, she is probably the best performer in Korea, she can sing and dance at the same time.
Make a video about sabrina carpenter's vocals
This video remained why I dislike Jessie j so much lmao.
i had to lower my volume in the gluttony part/oversinging, its kinda annoying.
Honestly they set a standard for me with their tiny desk performance an she was emotional with that perfomance but wasnt pverdoing it.imo
Edit: what on earth was that “i’ll be there” performance?😢
Rihanna dodge all the time
I'm as lamb as they come but I totally agree that Mariah could totally do better if she worked with a proper vocal coach.
Her difficult relationship with her mother, who was her first vocal coach, has something to do with it I believe.
For wrath I think of the performers who have meltdowns on stage when something doesnt go their way
Wrath might come from the toxic fan bases and shade throwing around
I damaged voice lit my imitating snoh Allegra, just do t have that raspy sweet vibrato.
Now I understand why Rihanna never drop an album or ANY new SOLO song since 2016 !!
Even this day I still don't like that cover of Stormy Weather. I remember watching my tv set like that is not how that song is supposed to be sung. Wrath could be overly passionate vocals or overly aggressive vocals. This is very creative. I never looked at it like this before.
I think if sometimes someone might miss the high notes if their voice isn’t in the best health on that day.
great video but listening to the bad examples of the singing was sooooo painful😭😭
Morissette has naturally thick tone but also she can change it to lighter one if she wants to. If only this world is awake of how talented Morissette is.
Sorry did he just say Aguilera in a Spanish accent? 7:59

Chloe definitely lust, she even lost her earring performing bruh. i love her songs tho. but her personality on stage…
Aging singers tend to dodge notes. The singers realize they cannot hit them or hit them as strongly when they are older.
Oh Lord.....why choose Xtina for the thumbnails? The AUDACITY!😅 Coming for everyone & their movassss. Everyone is a critic.
