The reviewers complaints have to do with Turbo Lag, and the stiffness with the larger wheels... go for a lower trim package or scale down the wheels, learn how to use the manual override, or throw it into Sport mode... I have the S version with 4 wheel drive / sunroof... love the car. Great performance, handling, fun to drive. Wish the rear side panels were a tiny bit smaller so there was a smaller blind spot. Mileage, if you drive conservatively, you can get better than 26MPG. I drive mostly highway and have 27MPG average after 11,000 miles, mostly in hills (bad for mileage).
My friend has this car, and I driven it for more than 3500 miles now, I actually kinda like it, it's roomy inside, audio isn't that bad, only problem is the horrible under-steer, and the gear box, in regular mode it jumps to the top gear so aggressively, and in Sport mode it will hold gear like it forgets how to up shift.
Not a fair review with some contradiction. He doesn't like the ride because the SEL is on 18" wheels. He should have mentioned that the entry level is on 16" wheels. If you want the better ride go with the 16" wheels on any of the levels.
Those are SAVANNAH 19" wheels, so the ride quality sucks with those low profile tires. I have the 17" and the ride quality is very good on rough surfaces, can't complain, confortable with ok suspension.
This is the guy who writes the articles on CNET anyways, I don't understand why so much people have a problem with him or the other guys. The content is always good
Correction...it doesn't have the HD radio. I bought my '13 Tiguan SEL a couple of months ago. Last year or 2012 it did have the HD radio but for 2013 VW deleted the HD radio.
STOP COMPARING OTHER REVIEWERS WITH COOLEY! yes, I do know that Cooley is one of the best out there but really guys... You guys need to chill and let other editors get the credit they deserve!
The only way to get Tiguan is with one of the turbo diesel engines. They even offered it with a V-10 twin turbo diesel that was a beast! That's the one I'd want.
This guy is obviously not very thorough. The car DOES have HD Radio, it DOES have Voice Control Audio, you failed to mention the Back Up camera with Park Assistance features. As far as rough rides, 19' wheels with low profile tire are not meant for off road driving so naturally do not sound or perform well offroad. Didn't mention the best in class safety, or Intelligent Crash Response System. This Car is sluggish, I think this guy was to short to reach the pedals, poor review of a decent vehicle
I like the review. Its clear what you recommend "I wouldn't buy this car." I don't have to read between the lines. Also, if I only needed 5 seats and don't plan to go off road much, why get this thing? Small capacity, average gas to boot.
Sure I have a reason. There is no Cooley, I demand Cooley back. Cooley is awesome. He makes these reviews what they are. No Cooley = generic reviews. I can get those at a hundred other youtube channels.
+Chandra Sekhar It is still built in Germany. That's why it is somewhat pricey compared to it's direct competition. They are talking about a new model crossover vehicle for the US market and built in Chattanooga, TN along side the Passat next year (2016).
Anni Benni There's a reason why Brian Cooley is the main man for most of these Car Tech videos. Most of the videos with the other fellows I just tend to skip unless it is a car I wouldn't mind a review on. Think of it like this, of them all (though, I only know of Brian, this guy, the chubby Afrian, and the from another era looking European), none of them would be able to sell me a car besides Mr. Cooley.
He needs to be more concise. Also, why the hell would you buy this when you can get a Honda odyssey for the same price? Both get the same real world gas mileage, but the Odyssey has a great audio system, more horsepower from its V6, and can seat 8 people. It looks great too.
Ok this guy said that Brian Cooley did not like the head unit (interface)1:24. But this guy says he likes it, @ 1:55 he says he would rather drop down to a lower trim cause he don't like it O_o.?????wtf???
You people complaining about the reviewer need to stop getting your panties all worked up in a bunch: car tech is about cars, not the personalities of individual reviewers.
That's crappy mileage. My 96 4Runner 4X4 4SPD Auto V6 gets about the same mileage. I don't get why spend so much money on a crossover like this when some of the older SUVs get equal mileage

I appreciate Wayne's expert opinion but I LOVE the Tiguan!
The car is not based on VW Golf platform. It is on PQ46 platform, on which is based Passat 6 and Passat 7
Use Manual override, it's much better. You shift when you want, and if you forget, it shifts before you destroy the car.
No one is as good as Cooley in presenting cars
Not a fair review with some contradiction.

On power, compared to Escape, Tiguan is old... But compared to Japanese cars, I think Tiguan is a lot more fun to drive. And the interior feels solid.
Wayne is getting better in his car reviews.
This is the guy who writes the articles on CNET anyways, I don't understand why so much people have a problem with him or the other guys. The content is always good
This guy makes Cooley look really good
I think of myself as a nice and fair person. This is the worst review I've ever seen
He lacks the punch of Cooley, but I like how thorough and sensible he is.
This was a great review. People need to stop being butt hurt when someone other than cooley does a review.
This seems like a bad review, because i have seen over 12 Tiguan reviews and no one said anything like this. im thinking of buying this car...
oh Cooley fanboys.... This guy is actually ok. He makes eye contact at the camera and well articulated speech compared to the other guy...
He did a good job (compared to other reviewers)
Correction...it doesn't have the HD radio. I bought my '13 Tiguan SEL a couple of months ago. Last year or 2012 it did have the HD radio but for 2013 VW deleted the HD radio.
37k yikes. I bought the base model and only paid 26k for a 4motion. Excellent car.
STOP COMPARING OTHER REVIEWERS WITH COOLEY! yes, I do know that Cooley is one of the best out there but really guys... You guys need to chill and let other editors get the credit they deserve!
No Cooley = dislikes. Brian Cooley Fanclub wants Cooley back asap.
So you can not take that apple's cable off?
Wayne is that you?
The only way to get Tiguan is with one of the turbo diesel engines. They even offered it with a V-10 twin turbo diesel that was a beast! That's the one I'd want.
CNET, were is cooley ?
Where is Brian Cooley?
I think Mr. Cooley should tell us before going for vacation !
Am I the only one who prefers Cooley over the other reviewers?
hello. can you helpme... my alarm dont work on my tiguan 2013
This guy is obviously not very thorough. The car DOES have HD Radio, it DOES have Voice Control Audio, you failed to mention the Back Up camera with Park Assistance features. What happened to the other bloke....
Where is Cooley?
You can tell right off the bat which videos have cooley or not in them based on the dislike bar
CNet should hire Emme Hall to do their car reviews.
You needed 30 seconds to establish that?
May I suggest Adblocker.
Sure I have a reason. There is no Cooley, I demand Cooley back. Cooley is awesome. He makes these reviews what they are. No Cooley = generic reviews. I can get those at a hundred other youtube channels.
Could care less who reviews the cars as long as I get to watch CNETTV
I really Like the "squared" Wheel Arches. Macho !
Where's the other dude??
I have (according to Adobe) the latest version of Flash Player, yet many of the You Tube videos tell me I need a newer one. Why?????????????????
Where's Cooley?
your right, i do.
i almost got sucked into arguing over the internet, which is like bringing a bat to a gun fight...
Where is this car built?
+Chandra Sekhar It is still built in Germany. That's why it is somewhat pricey compared to it's direct competition. They are talking about a new model crossover vehicle for the US market and built in Chattanooga, TN along side the Passat next year (2016).
Nobody does car reviews like Cooley.
omg.why isnt cnet on cars not listening to our comments that we want cooley for car reviews. Either him otherwise just fire him.
We come here for Cooley, we demand him back anytime he's away. Deal with it and WHERE'S COOLEY?
For some strange reason, the reviewer seems like he is nervous.
Cooley.
The ad was 30 seconds long.
CNET should get Mickey Mouse to do the car reviews when Cooley can't make it... He will be more relatable
He needs to be more concise. Also, why the hell would you buy this when you can get a Honda odyssey for the same price? Both get the same real world gas mileage, but the Odyssey has a great audio system, more horsepower from its V6, and can seat 8 people. It looks great too.
I have it but it doesn't block everything.
still waiting for Cooley
$37K is outrageous for what you get.
Ok this guy said that Brian Cooley did not like the head unit (interface)1:24. But this guy says he likes it, @ 1:55 he says he would rather drop down to a lower trim cause he don't like it O_o.?????wtf???
That was a nice review!
You people complaining about the reviewer need to stop getting your panties all worked up in a bunch: car tech is about cars, not the personalities of individual reviewers.
Is it just me or his hands cover half of the camera angle
The front lights of the car are like u_u
Plus the reliability and lower maintenance cost of the Odyssey blows the tiguan out of the water
that's a Chrysler in drag, no wonder he had issues with it
We want Cooley back
Do you guys not read all of these comments? We all want Cooley!! @cnettv
I hate when this guy does the reviews....gahh
but its ok to be mean to the black guy with the listh?
Have to admit Cooley is way better but we cant get Cooley all the time
do they not read the comments. No Cooley = negativity all around but guess they don't care
wheres brian cooley
You complain about refinement yet call it an economy car?!
The 2012 one (in England with Manuel gear) moves very quick. I've had 0-30 in 3 seconds
Cooley = God
You would be better served getting the new Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V or step up to a Volvo XC-60...the new Ford Escape is worth a look too.
We come for Cooley first than the tech.
I waited 30 seconds to see if it's Brian reviewing the car. I'm off.
WE WANT COOLEY! WE WANT COOLEY!
hold on....this guy is pretty goo......never mine
WE WANT COOLEY WE WANT COOLEY!
I wasn't mad that it wasn't Cooley. I was mad though at his facial hair..
This was so boring I fell asleep watching it last night.. At 9 PM!
Cooley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bless you
you need better reasons than those empty ones
Cooley didn't like the touch screen? What else is new the guy hates them all!
the front end looks like a last gen toyota rav4
we look forward to your return cooley, so you can send this reviewer back to his graveyard shift.
He just needs to dress better but he's improving
Not "Tiptronic" it's DSG.
no, it's indeed Tiptronic here in north america.
No cooley, i watched another xfinity ad for nothing
COOLEY WHERE ART THOU?????
Heads up Cooley is not here
yeah, good look with that.
Give me Cooley or give me crap.. oh what, that's what you just did..
That's crappy mileage. My 96 4Runner 4X4 4SPD Auto V6 gets about the same mileage. I don't get why spend so much money on a crossover like this when some of the older SUVs get equal mileage
Wheres Cooley???New bord Game
I wouldn't buy Tiguan SEL... Go for the lower trim which still has 2.0T
You might have the wrong one.
Cooley Cooley
Bring Cooley back
cooley..
WHERES COOLEYYY
lol it sounds like you're the one who needs to relax.
Don't be mean to this guy...
