Doing a dissertation at university on a zeroshift gearbox, and this video was a great help and getting me to understand standard dog clutches! Cheers pal
Glad your doing a dissertation at University for a gearbox mated to an internal combustion engine - something that's over 100 years old technologically speaking. Glad to know you're happy to boast this lol..
Lucky you remembered that last bit of info regarding the dynamic forces, imo it was some of the most important information in the video as to why straight cut 👍
I'll be putting my new th 400 with straight cut gear set in my Sonoma in the next couple days, I went with the no lateral forces excuse the whine is just a bonus, I figure with the tranny whine, solid roller and 9" locker it's going to be like a symphony driving down the road.🙃
@@heshtesh agreed! I love the sounds of meshing machinery. In cars it is usually associated with high performance (at times with %0 maintenance) but yeah usually the good stuff 👍
The FWD under 2L NA class is far easier to compete in. Over 2L and Turbocharged puts you against international teams with 7+ figure budgets and drivers who train 7 days a week as their full time job.
1st video I clicked on, you nailed it! I see others in the line up trying to confuse and mysterious voodoo. I knew because I race motorcycles what and how they work very slick shifting. Now to find one for my street rod. Thanks for video👍
I would like the idea of straight cut gear with syncros for my honda. That way it can still be driven normally while being able to handle increased power. But my budget just ins't looking too good for that.
Why does a dogbox slam into gear as opposed to a manual slides into gear? Is it the syncro rings in the normal manual that prevents the instant slam into the next gear?
+Jesse Jesse I just wanted to ask the same question. on synchro manual transmissions there is synchro ring between shifter ring and gears.. on dog transmission there is nothing between. so how do not shifter ring and gears grind each other when shifting?
+T0mB1ll I'm not too familiar with transmissions but I think it has to do with the fact that the gear teeth are always in mesh unlike a synchro mesh gearbox. So there's a larger gap for the dog teeth to mesh into compared to getting gear teeth to mesh together. that's my assumption anyway
Your Video's are great! I've still got the factory "glass" gearbox in my old Liberty RS lol Got a few old issues of Zoom magazine, first remember Reading about MRT when you guys built a G200 Charade with the G100 993 GT-ti engine in it.....many moons ago;)
Great explanation. Not sure if you'll see this, but what causes the gear to pop out? I have a dog box and 4th gear is popping out, and when it goes in, it almost feels like it's barely getting into where it should, struggling to engage 100%. Any ideaS?
Dogs, and or doghouse are worn or rounded over. Dogs are usually slightly undercut matching the doghouse, which physically hold the gear engaged under load. If it's popping out that means you have rounded the undercut dog ear off.
I know this is an old video, but I have a 93 accord sedan, and I'm looking for a dog, straight cut transmission, don't care about whining, just strength, and reliability at 250-300hp. any help, links, anything like that would be madly appreciated. Street car only, car is probably never gonna even think about seeing a track, plan on putting nos, maybe boosting it, don't want short gears, id prefer a 6 speed over anything, and id like to be able to reach near 180-200mph, or close to that, but also get off the line very quickly, 0-60 being around 5.5-6.5 seconds, and 0-100 being around 10-12 seconds. again, any help at all would be appreciated.
+Car Nut Straight-cut gears are actually worse for power transmission than helical gears. Helical gears are also stronger than straight cut gears due to their higher load-bearing surface area. The only reason straight-cut gears are used in racing transmissions is they don't produce axial loads along the main shaft or counter shaft which can cause a failure in one of the shafts, or more likely, it can cause the transmission case to fail.
If it is cable shifted try oiling up the cable sleeve and making sure the levers are pulling freely. If it is directly shifted take the gearstick out and check for buildup around the base of the stick
Because it's a specialty item. The market for dog boxes is small so there aren't a lot of companies making them. Prices for manufactured items require volume to drop prices, especially if they are labor intensive to produce.
also if they are labor intensive and there is a large enough market capital will be acquired to reduce or eliminate labor and replace it with automation

That's awesome! I wish I was doing that at my college!
@@jahnperez5060 what are you talking about? Boast??
@@BBrownyy No, I was saying this is primitive technology, its embarassing.
@@jahnperez5060 you think zero shift gearboxes, aka what F1 cars use, are primitive and embarrassing technology? 😂

Works with Subarus every day, but has a fwd Honda for rallying...

With dog box

The ZZT231 + 2ZZGE for
😂😂😂
You know what car it works best with? BMW M3 GTR.
Very clear explanation, thank you very much!
4:50 In other words the straight cut is a lot more stable
Thank you kind sir perfect video explained and answered every question i had!
thanks, please share and subscribe

Awesome video Brett!!!! Awesome information clears up the questions I had about the gears

Who's does these days?
Why does a dogbox slam into gear as opposed to a manual slides into gear? Is it the syncro rings in the normal manual that prevents the instant slam into the next gear?
+Jesse Jesse there is no synchro in between
And that's why it slams into gear violently yes?

that makes me feel OLD!
MRT Performance Me too, where do they go....
very good to see and learn can automatic gearbox modified for strength not necessary straight cut gear??? i just want to know
very helpful - clear, concise and informative
Take a shot every time he says “dog”
thanks for this footage awesome information.
Do they last some more if used with clutch?
very well explained sire

is it true that in a straight cut gearbox it cuts ignition when you shift through the gears?

I find it pretty cool how dirtbike transmissions have dog boxs lol
Straight cut constant mesh is what the specs read. They are quiet too, them Japanese are smart!
Can you downsnhift and select any gear you want like in a regular manual trans?
Really makes the car 'bark!' ;)
very helpful , thank you

Would the straight cut gears aid in better power transmission, i.e less overall drivetrain loss?
Car Nut in theory yes

err?
straight cut gears without the whine? helicore gears? i couldn't understand what did u call these gears? just know more plz, thank you anybody
Helical gears will reduce whine significantly over straight cut.
Is there any harm in having dogleg gear set and using it has a daily driver???

Everyone should know how a manual transmission works before watching this vid I recommend 3d models videos first then the video donut media did
Nice nice :D Thanks!
Damn interesting stuff!
nice info!!!

Guess there's no audio any more..
Now the audio works and I can watch. I would guess my local server delivered a corrupt video to me previously.
