    Hey Kev. I have a Standpoint I purchased at Dicks Sporting Goods during covid. I didn't want to commit to a more expensive bike then. Well, I fell in love with mountain biking trails in Florida. After improving everything but the brake levers I believe I have a proper mountain bike. Yes, I have spent a lot of money on the improvements but I am very happy with my Schwinn. Thanks for the review.

    I recently purchased the Schwinn Suburban DLX. Yes it is a big box bike, but for what I paid ($175) it has aluminum frame, 27.5 wheels and decent components, I am very happy, it makes a very comfortable trail bike and around towner. Also the rim brakes stop on a dime, I have used them in several retrofits myself, I frankly don't see the appeal of disc brakes on a bicycle.

    The step up is using rapid fire all in one shifter brake levers,double wall reinforced alloy wheels that are only 700c size,a shimano altus derailer kit,an angled frame of alloy,adjustable neck angle,raised alloy handlebars,alloy cranks,and maybe just maybe full disc brakes

    I can report that you are exactly right when it comes to Dicks Sporting Goods. Their bike mechanics are great. They managed to find and replace both tires on my 'Walmart' Schwinn, I'll get to that in a moment. The tires were folded and appeared too wide. It took the guy an hour but he got it! They took time to go over their bike purchasing procedures and I loved it.
    Now on to the Chinese Walmart Schwinn I bought. First it wasn't assembled correctly, the brakes were almost non existent when I rode it home, the handle bars were crooked, I had to adjust both when I got home. The pedal crank set wore out after 3 months, when I had the tires replaced at Dicks, the inner tube was for a 28 inch tire and the bike had the 27.5 tires, which Walmart doesn't stock. But they sell the bike. Yesterday while riding, the weld at the rear wheel completely separated sending me almost into traffic. Stay away from big box bikes, ESPECIALLY Walmart. I sent Schwinn an email describing my issues with pictures. These bikes from Walmart are absolute garbage. I'll be buying from Dicks next....

    I have watched many a KC vid and this one is def one of the more controversial videos you've made. Let me preface my comment and say that not only am I a fan of your channel but I'm also a huge Schwinn fan. I grew up in a small town with a Schwinn dealer that I eventually worked for as a mech. The problem that I have with this video has to do with your explanation/promotion of the "Signature Series" as a step above bike.
    It isn't. Certainly not for $450 before taxes.
    I can sort of see the Dicks/trained personnel/the bike is fully sorted aspect but when you start talking about the welds well, I don't see it as being any better than say an Axum. On top of that it has V brakes and a straight head tube. Not exactly traits that set it above other Schwinns. It is 27.5 which is a good (though more of an oddball is some ways....and the fact that I will refrain from commenting on the drivetrain should give you an idea of what my thoughts are on that) but it doesn't fit this channel to herald something based on what seems to be basically a marketing term.

    • @KevCentral

    • @racerx8410712
      @racerx8410712 Рік тому

      @KevCentral I get that, but then given what I've become accustomed to with your excellent channel, I would expect at least a bit more criticism. Is the Standpoint really worth $450? Even if Dicks really vets their assembly people I think it can be assumed that Schwinn or rather their parent company wouldn't have the frames made with a process that is of a process more so than that of their other high quality offerings. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but this is a value oriented channel, and I don't see value in the Standpoint.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  Рік тому

      Check the comments on the standpoint review. There were people that have a standpoint and love their bikes. Who are we to tell them any different? I rarely belittle any bike. OK, IF you are buying a bike based solely on weld quality, you're already in for a disappointment. The Tourney on a "higher tier" bike has me looking skeptically. Rim brakes have me questioning a "higher tier" bike. You would be in a better place saving a few more pennies and buying an entry level bike from a bike shop. The new Marlin 5 would be leaps and bounds better off as a starter bike than this would. And the "upgrade as you go" mantra is, quite possibly, a hint that you can't really afford this "hobby".

    @truracer20 Рік тому +2

    l'm still not buying this being any sort of step up and here are my thoughts on the matter
    If you take any Walmart Schwinn to a bike shop for a tune up, it'll have the same or better components, be properly tuned, and in most cases still cost less than this bike. If it costs more then it's a reflection of the base cost including better, or just more useful, components. Having the bike properly assembled and adjusted is not much of a step up when it has bottom tier components compared to that same manufacturers models sold elsewhere. The service offered by Dick's may be a step up but nothing about this bike is a step up over anything else Schwinn produces. The key take away here is Schwinn and Dick's are independent entities.
    Maybe Schwinn should reexamine how their bike shop sales practices of the past got them into the position they are attempting to claw their way out of? Schwinn was firmly in support of bike snobbery but didn't have the market share or stay current enough to survive it.
    Say what you will about disc brakes they are the new standard. And now you see the problem with bucking standards. I personally never had a problem with threaded headsets, yet you touted Threadless as a high point, while claiming disc brakes are a marketing gimmick, and praising Schwinn for making this dropper ready.
    For most new riders 1x with a wide range cassette eliminates 2/3 of shift adjustment problems. Not to mention cross chaining, raise your hand if you remember getting the hang of avoiding cross chaining while riding a mountain bike in actual mountain biking conditions? Technology has progressed to the point that 3x mountain bike drivetrains are ridiculously obsolete. The freewheel leaves you with a solid axle because hollow axles bend easily when used with freewheels, the axles bearing support is much closer to the hub than it is with a freehub. There is no cost savings by using a freewheel and 3x crankset vs a freehub and 1x crankset. Steel handle bars...
    Dick's sells the GT Avalanche 29" for $499, hydraulic disc brakes and a 3x9 drivetrain which uses a cassette, it has a tapered head tube, aluminum handle bars. For the extra $50 over the standpoint you get more modern geometry, a freehub, hydraulic disc brakes, alloy bars and a tapered head tube which equals a bike that has better upgrade potential. #1 is you don't need a new rear wheel to use a wide range cassette. When you want to upgrade the fork you can choose a tapered steerer or straight steerer, It already has disc brakes, you don't need new handle bars just to reduce weight, it comes in more frame sizes.
    In my opinion the Schwinn Standpoint signature series is severely outdated, especially for the price. But I suppose Trek gets $529 for the Marlin 4 so Dick's and Schwinn can be praised for offering a similarly equipped bike for a little less. Though I'd rather have the Bontrager components and Formula hubs over whatever Schwinn signature uses. And again for $80 more the similarly equipped Trek offers a better fork, alloy bars, name brand mechanical disc brakes, and all name brand components.
    Has anyone reviewed the Trek Marlin 4 gen 2 against only "bike shop" brands and models and called it a step up? Well maybe it is a step up over a Trek 820... I posit the answer is NO because it is a 3x7 with a freewheel, tourney components, and spring fork. See, when you eliminate after sales support as a variable then outdated components in no way equal a step up over industry, manufacturer or market standards.

    • @daniellarson3068
      @daniellarson3068 Рік тому

      It rained today. I was on my 30+ year old Schwinn bike. It has rim brakes. Maybe, there are advantages to disk brakes. I've never had disk brakes. I guess the Schwinn of old died long ago. Even their better bikes do not appear to meet the current standards expected for better bikes. Schwinn is owned by Pacific Cycles which is a in turn owned by the Dutch Company Pon Holdings. Pacific Cycles makes Schwinn and Mongoose bikes.
      Looking into this Pon Holdings, I found the following:
      "Our portfolio comprises more than 15 premium and iconic bike brands, including Gazelle, Cervélo, Urban Arrow, FOCUS, Santa Cruz, Kalkhoff, Veloretti, Cannondale, Schwinn, and CALOI. Our brands are spread across the world with locations in e.g. the Netherlands, Germany, the US, Canada, China, Taiwan, the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, and Brazil."
      So - It looks like Schwinn is relegated to lower tier. If they do build a better bike, a more "Premium" name will be slapped on by the Bean Counters. You would think they would let one or two premium bikes trickle in under the Schwinn name just to keep the name and reputation alive.

      @@KevCentral the signature sticker is just a sticker. At best they make sure the fork isn’t backwards. Every DSG near me rarely even has a mechanic on duty. This bike has the lowest tier parts that WILL fail. As mentioned, 27.5 quick release wheels are very hard to find. This is the definition of a bike to avoid. As someone that some people look to for advice, it should really be noted as to why to avoid this bike.
      Now, in fairness, I will say (and you have previously touched on it a little in a few other videos) that Schwinn is fantastic with customer service and tends to be able to replace most parts on a bike less than 5 years old. That is about the ONLY advantage to buying this over more reputable brands.

      @pcbootleger this bike is fine for beginners who are mostly road riders. With light trail riding on occasion. It's currently $249. There are far worse bikes currently being sold at Walmart for more than that.

    Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. So there. That bike is a pile of junk parts - you have to pay for those just to throw them in the trash, according to you, because - "looket dem welds." Seriously - nothing worth keeping. Nothing. Not even the decal.

      It's not a lot of money but it's an ugly bike, which is probably why no one is buying them.

    One more thing, the brakes are disc brakes, when applying the front brake, the front wheel twists to the right up to about an inch out of alignment.

    Sorry but at the end of the day Schwinn does NOT make a good bike anymore no matter what the series is, that’s just a fact.

      I disagree, but thanks for sharing your opinion. There is a bike for everyone 👍🏻

      @@KevCentralKev come on brother lol, you gotta see the bigger picture. Just because a bike is welded together properly with not garbage alloy doesn’t mean a bike is “good”. This geometry is 15 years old and it’s not even making an attempt to reap the benefits of some basic modern advance.
