  • I'm not saying we're going to have another Great Depression, but I feel we can all learn so much from the wisdom of our elders who went through the first Great Depression. It's better to be prepared than not prepared.

Taught myself to knit and crochet, so I can keep us in clothes and blankets, trying to get goats for milk and meat, and chickens for eggs and meat. Have plenty of space for gardens. Just really want to learn about making medicine and tinctures for illness from wild plants. Learned how to can milk and how to preserve eggs.

Those are all excellent starts!! Getting and properly storing heirloom seeds would be great as well! Learn how to identify, dry, and store herbs. Way too much to list!!

Mold on cheese is used in cooking these days, many of us don't know what starvation is like.
A time will come when we ALL experience starvation, BIG corporations blame consumers for the food they waste, it's rarely the consumers fault, we are all Guilty of wasting food, those Corporations and Governments who pay farmers to not grow or bury crops will regret not donating it to others in need, if you are unaware of this? Do your research, governments are Businesses they are Not for the people!
With my small garden and food we get from our church food hampers, we give food to our neighbors, we do not like to waste anything, if it can not eaten? It goes into the compost bins of which I have 3 bins and a few open compost heaps through out the yard - easier to turn them over then it is to move a bin that is loaded and turn it over.
I avoid chemicals at all costs, as it's toxic to our bodies.
Take a look at how nature works, Nothing goes to waste!
Replicate nature and nothing will be wasted!!!
Hand me downs, are the best clothes, I have my fathers clothes as he passed away.
We live in such a throw away society it's not funny at all, eventually ALL countries will close there borders and
nobody will be able to get the goods that they are so used to wearing, take a look at the past few years as a prime example, those who waste Nothing know how to survive, those who buy what there eyes like had to learn the hard way, buy what you need in the country you live in or learn to make your own.
I am happy to buy from charity shops to save on money they can be given to those in need or used to buy food for those who have nothing!

their is true wisdom in this video ,,my parents was true human refuse that said my grand parents raised me and evrything in this video is 100% gospel i work at a majior retailer what i see thrown away is truely heartbreaking we live in a era whare the goverment is not trusted money is mostly plastic and has no backing value (such as the gold satanderd )the skills menctioned in this video is still relevant today more relevant than people want to give credit for just because you dont have allot of money does not mean you are poor . skills like gardening, hunting, fishing and canning. have more value than money and that is the legacy they left behind the ability for the next generation to survuive hardship is slowly being forgotten. honor them by learning form their hardship so that when your face your own you may nit be comfortable but you will never be truely with out.

The mathematics of finance say that yes, a Great Depression is on the way. In fact we have been in a depression since 2009, that is to say that we have been in depressed growth off the mean by over 1.5% globally. "Only 1.5% you say? It adds up over time, that is now over $5 Trillion of what it should have been.
My tips: get out of debt, even if you have to sell something, get out of debt. If you owe on your home, make sure your mortgage is set at a fixed percentage. Start to own productive things: Tools, a garden and gardening tools, even firearms so that you can hunt and protect yourself from two legged predators. If you, say, own a cow; that cow she will produce milk and fertilizer. What ever the price of things, you can always sell that milk at a Market Price. No, I am not saying that you should go out and buy a cow, just think of things that produce stuff that can be sold.
Get to know your neighbors, build a community with them. Community is the best way to get through tough time.
Lastly, get right with God. You will need him.

My Mamaw made clothes out of towsacks too. She tatted the girls underwear. Mamaw also loved that sharp cheese (we called it rat cheese!) and must have cut mold off it. I had the same reaction as you, the first time I saw my father cut off the mold! Wonder where he learned that! I ate it and was fine, still do it to this day.

Yes Grandpa n grandma told me the same ! I wish we still had feedsack for packaging.Made diapers out of worn out ones Underwear curtains and sanitary rags . Scraps from table to the chickens n pigs Tea n coffee grounds for flowers.Saved buttons n trims for clothing.Saved string from feedbags to crochet and tack quilts . Old blankets for lining quilts The best parts old clothes saved for mending and quilt patches .Chicken and bacon fat saved in containers to reuse strained with a piece of cheesecloth. If thread not handy pull out a thread from edge of fabric. A soup pot always on stove Throw in odds n ends left over . Candle wax left from used melted and made into new ones. Grandpa would save metal from shooting game birds and melt it to make new ammo using antique molds and powder flask . Had to be patient and wait for it a proper aim . Grandpa was accurate No one could afford to waste a penny . A smokehouse to preserve meat . On and on Always a garden and healing herbs .Country folks survived and we're healthy Sugar was a treat not an everyday thing . Well water not polluted They put bleach n flouride in city water I filter mine Learn how to make a filter from scratch now !

Yes Ma'am! We did every single one of these things! I still to this day do them! Except I can't find the old flour sacks. I literally have a list of so many tips like this written down to make videos on and every single thing you listed is on there! Mamaw talked about how to make sanitary napkins, cloth diapers and how to properly care for and sanitize them!! She even would make reusable sanitary pads/underwear. I've seen you can buy those premade now!! No penny was EVER wasted. All clothes were saved. Of course if someone needed a clothes item, even if old, you'd give it to them, but there were soooo many ways they used clothes. She even taught me how to take, for example, an older Tshirt, especially one that didn't fit anymore, and to cut, tie, and/or sew it to make a new shirt that fit and was even cute!!
