In the 1980s I was so jealous of people that had two floppy drives for their Apple II computers. It was so time consuming to copy a floppy disk with just one drive.

Thats a neat trick with pulsating light. I would never guess that those wholes on the backside of the floppy have purpose of measuring rotation.

Another way to get the crap out of the hole where the capacitor was is to use a small pcb drill, then try re-wetting the joint and suck the solder out again. Also you may have to scrape off all the corrosion from the pads.
Yes! This is a very valid process. Now I know what my next shop upgrade will be... a PCB drill! Any suggestions on make/model/etc?
@@JoesComputerMuseum A set of 10 PCB drill bits from 0.3 to 1.2mm is available on eBay under $5. get a couple of sets in case you break one. These have a standard 1/8" (3.2mm) shaft diameter. I sometimes use a Dremel tool, however this is a bit too fast (10,000 to 37,000 RPM) and a bit heavy to use. The other tool I have is an old Arlec Supertool connected to a variable DC power supply, although I don't know if these are available anymore. I'm sure there would be more modern rotary tools available better than the ones I use. I rarely have to use them for drilling out problematic solder pads. You could get away with using a conventional drill carefully for one-off jobs.

So why did you just jumper the write protect sensor instead of trying to fix it?
Because I didn't have a replacement sensor, we were on a production deadline, and Javier didn't want the sensor anyway since he replaced it with a manual switch.

Are you aware those bearing packs are sealed?? No matter what you spray on them won't get in. 3-in-1 wouldn't have been good even if you opened the pack, it's too thin. Thin (WD40, PBBlaster, 3-in-1) works for cleaning, but to lubricate you need bearing grease.
Did you try chipquik on the joint you couldn't melt?
If I could go back in time and know all the things I've learned since then, I would! I know all your suggestions now. But back then - nope!

Joe, what kind of camera are you using to film? It has really fast auto-focus, even for things that are close to the camera.
All my cameras are iPhones, from 5c to 8, depending. I bought a really expensive camera once. The autofocus was crap, and it went right back. The iPhones, although lacking some of the depth-of-field magic you can get from bigger cameras, make up for it with insanely good focus capabilities and apps that allow me to lock all the settings for the environment. Buy a new phone? Old phone becomes a UA-cam camera.
You know you can use a regular.florescent light to give you sync read of the disk.
I had tried that several times and it did not work for me.
