    Hannah, I wanted to thank you for the impact you have had on my life.
    I started watching you because of your no-buy and budgeting stuff. But I had no interest in make up and skincare.
    I would spend too much money on homeware (particularly plants) and art/craft materials and sometimes clothes. My spending is sooo much better now.
    I have also learnt a lot about skincare. You said in a video that you don’t really use physical exfoliants much anymore and I had no idea what a physical exfoliant was. So I did some googling. I discovered salicylic acid is a thing. I also discovered how much I didn’t know about skincare. I’ve replaced all my skincare products with better quality products (though not more expensive). And I’ve added exfoliator (salicylic acid) and a serum into my routine. I also have a facial oil for when I have really dry skin. My face eczema is the best it’s been for years and the blackheads on my nose and spots on my forehead are starting to disappear for the first time since puberty!
    I’ve been careful to buy the cheapest but best products I could when getting new skincare stuff and only have one item in each category.
    I’m still not very into make up, but that’s always been because a lot of makeup I tried irritated my skin. Now that I know more about skincare and ingredients, I might be able to find makeup that doesn’t make me itch, and might finally be able to experiment with makeup (I couldn’t do that as a teenager though I wanted to because my skin would get too itchy).
    But you have changed my spending and changed my skin. And I wanted to thank you. You’ve had such an impact on me and we’ve never even spoken.
    Thank you
    Nikki

      Dear Nikki, thank you so much for this comment! I'm really happy to hear that your spending and your skin have improved :) As a former acne sufferer I really believe in the power of a smart skincare routine. Having it within your own power to clear up your skin can have a surprisingly big impact. Sending a hug to you! xoxo

      I've had some skin issues that prevented me from using make up when I was younger. I've found that a couple of layers of skincare stuff like a moisterizer, oil, and primer creates a barrier and keeps the itch down.

    Our minds are such odd things. I totally get that buying made you want to buy more. Last fall I realized that I had finally successfully filled the holes in my wardrobe (I won't go into why but it has been around a 4 year process). So I decided to do a no-buy for clothing through Halloween of 2019. Seems silly since I don't need anything but I feel like I've developed the habit of looking for and buying clothes and I needed to make a clean break so my brain really knows that it is time to stop considering clothing purchases. It's like being at the store and thinking, "Don't I need toilet paper?"; buying the toilet paper; getting home to find you had already bought some! My brain remembers the need more easily than it remembers that the need has been satisfied.

    Joe and Sadie flitting in and out in the back was so funny 😂😂 Additionally, your hair and the earrings are a 1960s dream! Lastly, I loved what you said about returns! I had a terrible habit (before going on my no buy) of using returns as a way to allow myself to impulsively buy things I really didn't need. I'm glad the no buy changed your attitude towards things, and that you made the decision to return that crushed liquid lip - that situation is truly the one returns are made for! 💛💛

  • @sarahwalden178
    @sarahwalden178 5 років тому +5

    I think it’s okay to purchase impulsively every once in awhile. I really do. You’ve learned so much from your no-Buy and your beauty budget, that even your impulses are more likely better informed and better thought out than they were before. I’ve realized this on my low-buy. My impulse buying is way, way down, but I was in Marshall’s the other day and saw a beautiful eyeshadow palette marked down to $10. The old me would have bought that and several other items, no question. This time, I thought about why I wanted it (just a marked down high end brand, or is it because the selection of colors is perfect and I know I like the formula?). I also realized that I didn’t want to completely lose the ability to be impulsive, sort of like you talked about with your second piercing. That’s why the budget it there. I don’t want to be afraid of shopping. I just need to remember that the whole point of my low-buy is to be a smarter consumer, and then trust myself that even my few impulsive purchases are more informed than I give myself credit for.

    • @MoonlitSunflower
      @MoonlitSunflower 5 років тому +1

      I second this. I've been considering trying some lip products and Colourpop has been high on my list to try because they're affordable and most people love them. I somewhat impulsively bought them but I was reasonable about the indulgence. I weeded 9+ colors down to 3, 1 of each formula that I saw and I took screen shots of the color on the models lips and compared them to see what I thought I would actually like. It was a bit impulsive, but I think I feel like it was worse than it actually was because at one point I had a cart full of 9 + lip products, 2 pigments, 2 eyeliners and I was even considering buying a palette (though I know that I own all of their palettes that I am truly interested in.) In the end I only bought the 2 pigments I wanted - they were the reason for the entire purchase, 3 lipsticks and 2 lip liners.

    A while back you had bought a part of shoes from ebay and had made a comment on the money going to another individual was positive in about every way. I love thrifting. Almost exclusively, my small closet has been composed from thredup, goodwills, local stores, and more specific items from ebay. Even my jewlery is made by local artists or mostly vintage used pieces from ebay. I adore them, so unique and have lasted so long with so much life left. Not fast fashion jewlery falling apart after a few months. Most items I've had or intend to have for years but the few items that no longer serve me are in good enough condition to re-donate. I can get quality I could not otherwise afford this way. Environemntally and ethically I know its not perfect (donations going to landfills, shipping of online items and the resources that intells, ex) but it is definately one of the better changes I've made.

    I totally get you about that awful feeling when the old habits take you again. I tripped at the end of last month with three pairs of shoes and a beautiful cotton blazer, all pre-loved (I spent about 180 USD including international shipping). After that, I was rapidly rolling down a slope and then I just said "Ok now, stop".
    I treated the spending as replacements for my work wardrobe (I had recently decluttered two pairs of worn out shoes, but I have more). I know I'm cheating, but that helped me to go back to the no-buy mindset instead of throwing everything away as I did in the past. I'm grateful that at least I was able to stop myself. Big hug!

    In the UK the makeup return policy is much stricter. Basically once you use it you can't return it. But I guess it's a good thing because it makes people think twice before purchasing.

      Same in France. And it seems like the rules around samples are much stricter here as well. I wish I could get a sample of foundation in order to truly test it beforehand, instead of hoping I'll get a foil packet that more often than not won't be my shade and/or a formula I'm actually interested in. It would limit mistakes when buying base products.

    Hi Hannah! Thank you for making me consider the ethical choices I make with my dollars. One thing ive noticed on my own journey is that more expensive does not alway equal more ethical. For example, at least in Australia, Cotton On was given a very high ethical rating. Have you considered cheaper options and how they might satisfy your beauty budget needs?

  • @LisaDia14

    I love how Joe told you to tell us about your bad day caused you to buy makeup. Sometimes retail therapy rears it’s ugly head but at least it was an item that you desired and not something that you bought randomly. It was also interesting how you said spending all that money at once made you want to spend more. It goes hand-in-hand with how you said the less you spend the less you feel like spending. I’m continuing on successfully with my makeup no by. I let the 15% to the Sephora sale go. I wanted to pick up the Drunk Elephant cleanser and a make up brush but I decided to wait it out until I finish up the balm cleanser that I am currently using. For the 15% discount, I don’t need to store a back up of a cleanser. And I am thinking about the make up brush to make sure it’s something that I really want.

Agree that a companies return policy shouldn’t be a reason to try a product, but also, you should be able to return a product especially if you have tried to do everything you can to not need to return it, but in the end it just didn’t work out. Thank you for addressing this topic.

    I've got liquid lipstick that's sadly too dark to weard during the day when applied with the wand. I put it on the back of my hand and then apply it with lip brush. I'm not saying it to change your mind about returning (I would probably return mine if they had return policy - I like my lipsticks to be easily reaplied) but maybe try it once to see if the effect is any different than what you get now.

    I'm on week two of my own no buy and currently I am struggling with something which seems like a no-brainer to some but it has been a big thing in my mind for the last couple of days: sunscreen. I was running out of sunscreen right before my no buy began and I decided not to continue with the sunscreen I was using (Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Gel) because of the high concentration of alcohol in this particular product. So, I went ahead and ordered something I thought I used to like which had no alcohol and I remembered owning in the past before the Bioré one, the Alba Botanica Hawaiian Sunscreen SPF 45. Well... I was sorely reminded of why I had changed from that sunscreen to the one I was using up until this point: it stings when it gets in your eyes. Now, if this wasn't working as my daily face sunscreen it wouldn't be so much of an issue except that it is and it somehow always ends up in my eyes at the end of the day when I've been teaching for a couple of hours and it burns. So you might be thinking, well then just buy a new sunscreen! But this feels... wrong in a way? The burning isn't so bad, more like an annoying stinging but part of me feels I should not ignore this. This coupled with the fact that I now have an excuse to BUY something and also spend hours browsing and obsessing over the perfect sunscreen has me just wanting to continue to use the one I have. It's quite a lot to consider.
    Again, sorry for using your comments as a place to write so much but it does help me get these thoughts out of my head and onto the screen. Your videos truly inspired me to go on this journey and truly analyze what it is these actions make me feel and why. Also, I am sooo not going to click on the links for that shirt you're wearing or else I'm going to lament my no buy for a bit. You look incredible as always!

      Velkoria Agrios obviously you know your no buy rules better than anyone but it seems to me that buying a new sunscreen in those circumstances is reasonable. I just switched from the Biore Watery Essence (also because of alcohol content) to the Erin’s Faces one Hannah recommends. It cost a lot (relative to what I usually spend on skincare) but it really is an amazing product- so lightweight and blends in easily with no sunscreen smell. I also prefer to support that small company over Biore.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому +2

      don't worry about writing in the comments, I love it! If you remember, I had a "health and safety" provision in my no-buy rules. I think sunscreen IN your eyes is probably bad for your eyes, and not using a sunscreen is bad for your skin. To me, buying a different one would fall under health & safety. I'd use up the Alba just on the body.

    • @moonireads
      @moonireads 5 років тому +2

      @@HannahLouisePoston Thank you so much for replying, Hannah. I also have a health and safety amendment to my no-buy rules but I guess I was so excited to go into this head first that I was resisting buying something altogether. I am kind of an extremist like that. I also think I was kind of willing to ignore the slight stinging because it's so slight- I say now as I refuse to touch my face in fear that this product will get in my eyes and I will have to suffer through it for the next four hours of work.
      Ah, the things we (and by we I truly do mean me) are willing to do in order to say 'I achieved this thing.'
      Edit: I think in the end I have made the right decision in buying a sunscreen that isn't going to blind me in the future.

    • @moonireads
      @moonireads 5 років тому +1

      @@amandadavenport2020 I also think it's reasonable and I think the reason I am so pushing back against it is the fact that it feels too soon to be 'cheating' if that makes any sense. No, it's not cheating because this is clearly hurting me but it 'feels' that way to me. I almost bit the bullet and bought the Erin's Faces SPF Hannah raves about... until I realized I live in Spain and the shipping and customs brought the price up to almost double the original and that was just not an investment I was willing to make for something I use on the daily and will need more of. I think I am somewhere between the Supergoop one and maybe the Simple hydrating lotion with SPF 30. We'll see which one I go for soon! Thank you for your kind reply though.

    I love the BB crushed lipstick, but I bought it in 2 lighter colors, Juicy Date and Peach and Quiet. I apply it to my lower lip and smush my lips together to transfer it to the top lip and use the wand without adding more product, to perfect the lip. I like that it is not thick and drying like a typical liquid lip which I hate. Exchange it for another color perhaps.

    Oh my goodness we had a similar experience. Was having a bad day thought I’d look over the sale on Beauty Bay (British beauty site). The Shimmer Veils are usually £20 each and they were on sale for £2 each. Didn’t need them but thought it would make me feel better so I bought 3. Lol

    I just came to your channel thru Samantha March. This is the second video I am watching from you and you got a new subscriber. I have a question: what is a better way to handle a bad day without “buying stuff”? Especially when at work? (Most of my bad days have to do with work stuff). I should not buy makeup or clothes I do not need, nor treat myself to overpriced drinks or sugary treats. I am nit a yoga person. I am trying to get back into exercising regularly, and that works. But do you have any other tips? Thank you!

    I have to admit that I made a semi-impulsive beauty purchase a few days ago, myself...
    I was having a particularly rough day with my illness, feeling a pervasive blah, & I committed to a few months of Scentbird. Granted, it was something I've been mulling over for a few years & I didn't even realize that shipped here to Puerto Rico, so... In a sense, it was somewhat deliberate. I have been wanting to try more unisex fragrances [in no small sense influenced by you!]. But I realize my motivations weren't 100% in the right place.
    I'm happy with my decision & excited, but I really need to combat wanting to make myself feel better internally through an external means. Unless it's buying more ice packs, hahahah

    No7 has a beautiful concealer, the lightest is shade 10. It's in a click pen like YSL and others. I didn't mention it for the concealer video you asked for references in because you said you needed it so fair. Im not sure how fair it would be on you, but the formula is great .

    I love the bobbi brown crushed lipsticks- I have Bare, Cabana, and Grenadine and they are my go tos period. I wish that there were more deeper browns and purpley plums (I feel like the ones they have lean very red.) I always want to pick up more colors but need to not- I feel like I must have already chosen the ones in the range that flatter me most. Sad to hear that the liquid lips aren't more of the same texture as there are some interesting colors but probably for the best haha.

    Your plants are lovely and I love how weird they are. I’ve been jonesing for a couple house plants, but I’m waiting until after RONB May. I spent most of my budget last month on staple replacement skincare.
    I purchased BOTH Good Genes and The Ordinary 10% Lactic Acid. I have regrets. I had never tried the ordinary and it’s just okay. I kind of wish I had saved the $10-$12 but the other part of me things GG is just sooo expensive! I also bought two t shirts, and spent money getting my nails done with a friend. Normally services like nails aren’t part of my beauty budget, but because I had not accounted for it in my personal care budget it had to come from somewhere. I finished the month with $72 and I’m spending no money this month. I’m hoping to go into June with the necessary funds to buy some summer clothes for the gaps in my wardrobe and a new Hourglass Powder. However my budget is currently acting as a buffer for blog expenses so it’ll depend on how the setting up of the blog goes. The blog is still on track to go live on June 1, so I’m excited 😬

  • @AwakingOceanborn
    @AwakingOceanborn 5 років тому +1

    Your two new ear piercings just reminded me of the 4 I am getting in June (yay holiday!).
    If it makes you feel better I also used makeup as retail therapy this month. An apartment in my building caught fire (I was never in any danger of burning) at like 4am two sundays ago, my apartment filled with smoke and the cat and I ended up having to breathe out of a tiny window on the attic (smoke was getting in through both my balcony and my front door. Joy) for about 20 min until we got evacuated. So when I got home, instead of getting back into bed I cleaned my house like three times to try and get rid of the soot, thus slept... less than 5 h. So on Monday, sleep deprived, jumpy as you can imagine and dealing with the fun after effects of smoke inhalation I got on the Internet and got myself an eyeshadow palette. I can’t even bring myself to regret it tbh.

    I like the concept of Atitzia. I find it hard to find something for me because of the fact that most their tops are cropped and a lot of the blouses are 100% polyester which is not what I want for their prices. Your t shirt looks beautiful though!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому

      books were included in my no-buy and I got in the habit of going to the library, so it's not really a problem anymore. I do buy books from time to time for my Kindle and I have an Audible membership, and those are not coming out of my budget (the Audible books are technically a work expense, and the Kindle books only ever add up to a couple of dollars a month). I read a lot of library books :)
