The Rhine Maidens just don't think things through very well, do they? After rejecting Alberich's advances, and therefore pissing him off, they tell him what he has to do to steal the Rhine Gold. If one of them had put out for him, by contrast, he wouldn't found the idea of renouncing love so attractive.
