Hey Maddie, just want to chime in to say one of the things my wife and I enjoy most about your channel is how you "keep it real." I can think of several occasions during your trip where you encountered an obstacle and then "talked it through" with yourself (and us!) resulting in YOU deciding how you will react to it. That's easier said than done! Cheers!
Thank you, Justin! That’s so good to hear! Sometimes I worry that that aspect of my videos won’t go over well with some folks, so I’m really glad it works for you all!
Maddie! You know, if we didn’t have technology, we would eliminate 90% of our frustrations. Cannot tell you how many things I’ve lost or hours I could not get back. I feel for you. But most importantly, you scared me with no water in the desert. Your parents must have freaked out watching this video. You are a special person.
Sorry to hear about your phone! Your optimism and honesty is sincerely inspiring. About the one cricket; I brought a Californian friend through Kentucky last year and her mind was blown by the chorus of crickets, she had only ever heard one at a time. her: "What is that sound?" me: "What sound?"
Hey there Maddie! Nice to see your smiling face. Clearly a rough couple of days. However, you recovered nicely with a positive outlook. As far as your adventure...WOW! Beautiful! I love pink clouds. Take care 🍻
G,day Maddie Adapt, Overcome, Complete your mission !!! Just another bump in the road. No one died , in the scale of your life, don't mean nothing!! Your tough you'll figure it out , I know you will, I have faith in you. Good news, took 20 steps with a walker frame today, 3 months from now I'll be strutting up the road like nothing happened !! All the best. Bluey
Girl!!! This city guy would never sleep outside by myself in the Grand Canyon. I am so proud of what you're doing and I'm glad that you got down to the creek okay and back up fine too. Watching you is so spectacularly enjoyable. I hope you get that patron video done. Take uour time. It is an act of love and appreciation.
Maddie, this video was a testament to your perseverance and I am really proud of you. Thank you for being a strong enough person so video the bad moments. You are truly an inspiration and this really hit home about the importance of drinking water. Another fantastic video!! 💖
Hey, Maddie, you are a wonderful Lady, in an awesome place! As one of your patrons, i can say all your work is amazing, whenever we see it! And that sky is amazing!
Oh yay! I was actually talking about the patreon video I posted most recently- behind the scenes driving across Texas! Luckily, I didn’t lose my progress and just had to post it a few days later than planned!
Wow ... You had a rough trip. I highly recommend using either the Sawyer Squeeze water filter (not the Sawyer Mini) or the Platypus Quickdraw filter. Also, using bottles (like Smart Water bottles) are much better than using a water bladder since you can see the water and ration consumption. Also, bladders leak. Well, you have stories to tell your future grandchildren:) ha, ha
Maddie it’s your absolute honesty and your “tell it like it is attitude” that makes you so a amazing to watch. Dehydration maybe caused your headache? When I was in university I had lots of issues falling asleep (brain wouldn’t turn off). My solution was to read a book I had read a thousand times (a backpacking book). Even now I’m retired if I’m working on a project (usually something on the van these days) my brain likes to do it’s best work when I should be sleeping. Might be time to replace that water bladder! Congrats on backpacking the Grand Canyon! Most don’t even hike down it. You are one tough lady.
Your perseverance is awesome. I am amazed that you do all the videos with the iPhone. I have an iPhone 13 Pro, and I apparently am not using it like you do. There is a fairly inexpensive item that connects to the lightning port on your iPhone that will allow you to expand storage, whether it’s a small hard drive or a micro SD card. You should use that to save important content. BTW, I use an iPad to edit video and photos. You might be able to find a used one that will be infinitely better than editing on an iPhone. Anyway, we’re all here for you. I’m sure you’ll make it through. Can’t wait to see what you do in California. I’m betting you need more than one day to cover our great state.
I'm sorry this happened. I could feel your pain. From experience I know this is easy to do because of the repetition from being in the delete mode so long to make more space on your phone. Coincidentally .... I was watching Bob Wells' video he posted just today about filming with smartphones. He had a little SSD drive that he plugged into his phone. It automatically copied all of his files to this little drive. I will investigate this further. The amazing quality of some of these smartphones blow me away! Your videos are always wonderful!
Amazing views, thank you for sharing with us on your journey. Sorry about the App debacle, life is a struggle but can be overcome, regardless of the situation. Stay positive and stay hydrated with water and beer of course!
I feel so sad about you deleting the app and losing your content. Tomorrow is another day and look at the majestic beauty that is in front of you and the things you have seen and are yet to see. Although the content is gone. You still have the motivation and smarts to do it again. So, drink a beer and enjoy the beauty that is around you both in nature and inside you. We are here to support you. Thank you for taking us along on your great adventure!😊
Hey Maddie…… Your past videos are ALL Amazing girl… but the best part is you let us share all your experiences on the road of Van life and your adventures no matter when mistakes are made or when you make a Beautiful discovery we are all rooting for you. Your down to earth approach is so inviting to see the many places that we have never seen with our own eyes before. So don’t worry, I’m hoping you will make a 2nd rounds of adventuring of the states because there is so much more to see and so excited to experience with you girl. Stay safe with your travels and remember… there will be BUMPS in those roads you travel but you keep going girl with that beautiful smile of yours …
Aww 💕 thank you so much!! That is so wonderful to hear! I definitely want to make a second lap around the country, too! There’s always so much to see!! So stay tuned!
Was going through my list of subscriptions and like There's Maddie's Beer in Beautiful Places! Even tho I for some reason don't get your notifications -- yes, I clicked on the bell -- I am getting smart enough to peruse my 352 subscriptions periodically. :) Sorry to hear about your frustration but you seem to work it out in your head/heart. Good for you! Keep on truckin, woman. Diana
Oh yay! Thanks for turning on the notifications! I think UA-cam shows more new people my videos if a lot of people watch them as soon as I post them. So thanks a bunch for helping me out in that!
Awww, Maddie.... That was a little heartbreaking to see you upset. Your resilience is quite remarkable. I admire that. I'm not sure I would fair as well. I think people like you are to whom Neichze referred with his übermensch philosophy.
Dang, I was a little worried there in the middle, but I’m glad everything worked out. Well, mostly worked out. Sorry to hear about the vid you were working on. But I appreciate you showing that traveling isn’t all sunshine and hoodoos, and that it sucks in the moment sometimes. I hope that you got some type 2 fun out of this though, and can look back on this adventure and feel proud of yourself. Because tbh it was pretty badass and that cave you found was dope
Aww, so sorry.,you'll have the memories Maddie...our mood can't remove what we saw and experienced ..a n d just think of all the amazing places you will be at..yes..just human..onessrd, still dad, I know....
Aw, so sad, reminds me of camera dropped in ocean. Hey, it always could be worse, and it wasn't. Hope you cheer up or get back to normal soon, love ya.
I am so sorry Maddie, but you handle adversity well. So many times I have set my pack down wrong and accidentally emptied the water bladder; so frustrating! That cave would have made a nice camp spot...God bless and safe travels.
Hey Maddie! Love seeing new videos from you… I think you’re maybe drinking too much filtered water from the rivers. The filters don’t always get all the bacteria 🦠 and some spores even survive 100 degrees boiling. Your skin was a lot smoother when you started and not clean enough water 💧 can also mess with you emotionally. Maybe invest in more bottled water and always remember to pray 🙏. Love you ❤️
Oh interesting! The water I had on my first day was from a sink in a visitors center, if I remember right, but it definitely could have still not been the cleanest. Good to know!
Even though you lost the content, this was still a very epic episode. In the future backup up all your videos and pics on a flash drive. So are you planning on hiking Angels Landing? We did it two years ago, what's funny. I'm an avid skydiver and do a lot of base jumping. When we got to the top of the summit I told my girlfriend we should of brought our parachutes and base jumped it, would of been the quickest way down. Checkout the videos posted of me and my friends base jumping the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho. The jump is 486 feet AGL and you have 4 seconds to deploy your chute....
About saving things on a flash drive, the problem wasn’t that I lost the raw footage, but I lost the progress I had made on making it into one big edited video. That’s what I was trying to explain when I was talking about I couldn’t save it because that would be like gluing the pieces together and I wasn’t finished with the pieces. It’s hard to explain! Also, I hiked Angels Landing in 2017! If you want to hear about my experience, I talked about it on one of my early videos: ua-cam.com/video/xTkMhL0pRPE/v-deo.html BASE jumping is not for me, but it sounds like you’ve had a lot of fun with it!
Maddie, if you regularly backed up your phone, might it be possible to restore from a backup that replicates both the app you accidentally deleted and the edits up to that point? You might still miss a day or two of your editing efforts, but it’s something, at least. That said, do NOT restore from a backup before you offload your newest videos and images (otherwise, they’ll be overwritten).
This is kind of a spoiler for the next video but by a miracle, when I got my phone fixed, the app was still there with the video in tact! I always have problems with storage on my phone, but now I’m going to try to be even more proactive about getting rid of stuff as soon as I can
While ur waiting to upgrade and purchase equipment start with emailing ur footage to urself to save. If wontvtake up ur atorage and u dont need the “cloud”
Thanks for the suggestion, but the problem wasn’t losing the footage itself, it was losing progress I made on editing the footage into one big edited video! That’s what I was trying to explain when I was talking about saving it would be like gluing it together before it was finished. It’s hard for me to explain!
sorry about the app. im gonna be leaving soon and i was planning on using a camera and an ipad for my videos, because i didnt want to lug my clunker laptop on the road. how do the videos work for you? i mainly dont want my laptop because then its like a whole package i got to bring with the charger and the external harddrive as well as risking it getting stolen or maintaining it on the road because i have had hard drives crash on me.
I think if you would be fine without having the bigger screen of a laptop, and you’ll probably be fine. I do worry about mine getting stolen, since when there are signs that say “don’t leave valuables in your vehicle”, I can’t really leave it anywhere else! I use my iPhone to record and edit on an app called VLLO. I’ve been using it for like a year and a half now, and I like it! The only thing you really can’t do is click on multiple clips and change them all at the same time, like turn up all the selected clip’s volumes or something like that
Hey, you still have your footage so everything is gravy plus the edit will go way quicker now that you're already really familiar with the footage. I have a video called "How to Vlog Your Thru Hike" where I detail all my "tech stuff" that I use when creating videos on the go. In the video, I show you how to back up footage to an external hard drive or SD card from your phone. Please don't fall into the tech trap of thinking you need some new piece of gear to create videos...you've made it this far with what you have...that's money that could be spent on more travels!
"Bad things happening" "My problems" You are in the Grand Cayon, at sunset. Your device problems are an extraneous minor issue. Appreciate the moment you have been given.
