The UNDER-RATED Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Locomotives hauling BIG Freight through the Channel Tunnel..!

  • These Electric Bo-Bo-Bo High Power Locomotives are very under-rated in my view - Continually back and forth between Folkestone and Calais now for well over 20 years - A number of the original batch of locos now approaching 30 years of age! The re-engineered 98** series are now rated to over 9000+ hp.
Often moving payload freight at over 2000 tonnes per trip with ease.. These are very under appreciated locomotives which generally see little air time by enthusiasts - Albeit viewing is not easy to access.. I could only find this one spot at the Folkestone terminal to see passenger and HGV services arriving from Calais.
I couldn't find a vantage point for departing services - Security is understandably very high.
The video shows both types of freight wagons these locos haul - Both the fully encloses cars that house cars and small/medium sized vehicles and also the open cars for HGV's.
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching

I kind of wish they would set up a viewing point somewhere so people can just sit around and watch all day.

I've often thought it's a pity they were never cleared to operate through to London via HS1. An HGV shuttle service from an interchange just off the M25 would alleviate a lot of congestion and road mileage, particularly when the French were playing up. I don't know about anyone else, but I think of them as Class 94

I think they are sort of Class 9 ….. 😊

Thanks Brian - It looked like a fairly well trod area so I’m guessing it’s used quite often.

I was always a bit pissed the class 92's weren't doing this and it was they were designed for. Still you have said something that will stay with me and I'll now appreciate them more if I ever get down south to watch them.
Truth be told if the 92's were at this then I'd never have seen them up north and learnt more about them.

how haven't any major model railway manufacturers made a Le Shuttle locomotive yet?!

Been some time since standing in that very spot. I was lucky enough to get a tour around the complex both english and French sides in 2003. It’s the last 5 krupps I’m after but they’re so difficult to see

so long as one of them doesnt conk out. As my late wife and I found out to our cost 12 years ago, one failed on the way out onto the Brit side. One loco in itself doesnt have enough tractive effort to pull the entire shuttle load out of the tunnel up the upslope.... had to wait to be pulled out by an unnamed diesel on the UK side, probably a shed....

That's why there are usually two ying yings stabled at folkestone.... On the Eastern side, but not visable from the train coming out of the tunnel... You can see them, just before turning off towards the slip road heading towards the Tunnel junction.. You can see them if you're driving an HGV, but I don't think so if you're in a car.. I'm the one in the carriage at the front, usually climbing over other truck drivers, trying to get the numbers... They all think I'm potty..... Lol.

If one of these fails then is it rescued by a class 66 ? I didn’t know diesels were allowed into the tunnel due to the fumes

Do they have classification numbers in both the British and the French systems?

    • @trainsplanes
      @trainsplanes  Рік тому +2

They just carry a 4 digit ID, prefixed by a 9.. I think the 98** locos are the higher powered locos.

@@trainsplanes I don't know much about how TOPS (or the French or Irish equivalents) work, to be honest. I just have vague notions.
I wonder what numbers the Enterprise sets have. Must check.

They use the British Numbering systems and are called the Eurotunnel Class 9000
They are also called the Class 9

America has something similar with the Amtrak “Auto” train. I really don’t think these trains should be electric when it comes to pulling heavy cargo, diesel is the way to go
