I would love to see a tomboy girl that’s really nice and acts like an older sibling to others. I guess people think that if you aren’t already a guy, the only way to be “masculine” is to be abrasive or rude, which is just bad for anyone who wants to be masculine. Grossness and rudeness should just be bad traits, not masculine traits. Also I always hated how in early episodes Dash was rude to Fluttershy for being the way she is. Sensitive and anxious people are not doing anything wrong just because you don’t understand them.
Still rambling because I want to share thoughts, no replies necessary. Toph from ATLA is a great example. She’s blunt, competitive, a little sloppy, and she makes fun of others. But she does grow and learn to approach Aang’s training in a more patient and understanding way. Katara calls it out when Toph displays selfish behavior like scamming. Even with all of Toph’s abrasive traits, she is overall well-meaning. She even goes to the spa with Katara, even though it’s not her thing. I know you don’t do video games as much, but Karlach from bg3 is also very masculine but literally the sweetest, happiest, most morally upright character in the game. I also want to point out that some people do like characters that are horrible people. I think this is especially true if the negative traits are rounded out with other qualities like you said, and if those negative traits have a reason to be there or are painted as a problem. But media also doesn’t have a moral obligation to portray good as good and bad as bad, if that makes sense. Some characters are vile through and through, but people love them. Depends on how a person reacts to immoral or unpleasant behaviors. Lastly, gross out humor rarely appeals to me in kid cartoons. I think it’s funny if someone says “poo poo” but every time the loud house does it, I hate it. I know that was long sorry I have many thoughts.
I think that Wendy from Gravity Falls is a good representation of a well written tomboy character. One of the many traits that I really like about her character is that her being an "outdoorsy" person doesn't completely define who she is as a character, it adds onto it. She's very respectful, resourceful and charismatic as well as being "laid back" and "cool" around her friends as a way to mask her stress (revealed in the SOTBE episode). Details like those make her feel more fleshed out as a character within the few episodes that she's in. I hope to see more positive representations of tomboy characters in future media 😊
Character idea: A Tomboy who acts like a jerk, but only for the sake of maintaining her street cred. She's actually a total softie, and she's not that good at being a jerk.
That's why I've preferred Applejack she has he toxic tomboy moments but overall she's really compassionate and affectionate. She also really values family and is a great home maker but also really strong, capable, sporty and competitive. Basically similar to Rainbow Dash but not a asshole and has a caring I suppose you could say protective motherly side for her sister
As A Tomboy I Agree with the video. Most of us are Nice people, And it’s A Shame that We’re Portrayed in this way. Hopefully There will be better Tomboy characters in media the future.
media depictions of tomboys made me scared to express my masculinity as a kid. that and because i grew up in a traditional environment. i liked tomboy characters because i was a naturally masculine person (transmasc, to be exact) but i didn't think of myself as an aggressive jerk.
Yeah, I liked that they were more masculine but didn’t like how they made being a jerk into a masc trait. It actually made me doubt my own masculinity in a way and made me doubt if I was “man enough” to be a guy if that makes sense. I actually found myself gravitating to male characters that weren’t trying to make themselves out to be manly, or struggled with the idea of manliness like Dipper or Peter Parker, because they were able to be kind to others while still being guys (and their personalities didn’t revolve around sports, which every tomboy character had but wasn’t something I was interested in lol) (Also I keep seeing you everywhere lmao)
Anne from Amphibia is a good subversion of tomboys. She isn't very girly, but is still grossed out by bugs and reads girl magazines. Edit: Yay you thought so too!
Looking up Anne's character, she falls under the category of either "Girly girl with a tomboy streak" or "Tomboy with a girly streak." Meaning she is can one or the other, it really depends on which way you look at her.
it's not even so bad to have a character who's a tomboy who just so happens to be abrasive, a character can have flaws and them still be well written, and at least with characters like rainbow dash when she's abrasive it's usually because she's supposed to learn a lesson at the end and they make it clear she's in the wrong, and all of the mane 6 have their flaws that they constantly regress into, like fluttershy constantly relearning the "stand up for yourself" lesson, and rarity can be selfish and spoiled sometimes, but for the others it's weird how they make it seem like they're mean or obnoxious specifically because they're tomboys rather than it just being a personality trait seperate from the tomboyishness.
What about Wendy from Gravity Falls? She’s a cool, laid-back, and friendly tomboy who despite slacking around, is someone with a kind heart who’s willing to help Dipper and Mabel.
i saw buttercup in the thumbnail and was fully ready to go to bat for my favorite ppg… but when i realized her segment was about buttercup in the *reboot* i was like “yeah, she’s earned a segment in this video” lol
As a tomboy who highly values being empathetic and understanding, that was part of the reason why I liked Luz’s character so much, you don’t see many tomboy characters who focus on those things, I guess because some people consider feelings feminine. At the moment I’m working on my own story based on my struggles with mental health and stuff and I hope to portray the main character (who is based on me, since the i hope for the story to act as comfort for people with similar struggles as me) accurately as both tomboyish but also caring.
Not all tomboys are mean. There's a trope called "Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity", where tomboys are much nicer than girly girls. Such examples include Gina Gillotti and Margaret Wade from Dennis the Menace (US), Skeeter and Piggy from Muppet Babies (1984), and Susie Carmichael and Angelica Pickles from Rugrats (1991).
My tomboy character, fiona used to be an asshole. But i rewrote it because i hated her. i thought that she does not know how emotions work, but she is soft inside when you hit a spot. She loves her sisters, and she is the oldest! she's not the best in caring, but shes trying.
i think my least favorite thing is when the tomboy characters bully their love interests, and it's just supposed to be acceptable because "she picks on you because she likes you!" the loud house has ronnie anne, and that's basically the entire premise of miss nagatoro, it's one thing for a character to be bad with feelings, and i love tsundere characters when done well, but i hate it when they constantly torment or even beat up their crush and their crush is just supposed to accept it, and they're seen as the bad guy for not wanting to date their bully.
I really like your video! On my personal view the mean tomboy is a overcorrection of making the girl just one of the boys and girlygirls are mean, its sad but seem that people try very hard to not fall into a steriotype end up falling on another
Ty for watching! The trope definitely seems to be trying to be a overcompensating for the girly girl trope but in these cases like these it didn’t turn out too well 😅
In the MLP episode 21 pranks later Rainbow Dash resorts to toilet humor by using a whopee cushion and at some point Pinky Pie responded with "Youv'e got to admit Twilight that was funny"and Twilight responded in an annoyed tone "Not really"I don't think that the issue with Twilight at the time was so much that she had an issue with toilet humor or that the whopee cushion was necessarily a bit of an old cliche or lazy gag,I think that the main problem for Twilight in this scenario is that she was trying to have a formal and serious meeting with Rainbow Dash to call her out for pranking Fluttershy in the way in which she did and the whopee cushion placed under Twilight chair by Rainbow Dash at the time sort of came off to Twilight like Rainbow Dash was being flippant, not really taking the situation seriously and was sort of acting in a way which was disrespectful towards her.
I think the reason why so many writers do not know how to write women is because the writing field is completely male-dominated. It's essentially a breeding ground for misogyny, and the women that are in the writing field are either treated like sex objects that the males can play with to their hearts' desires or subhuman subservient insects that are forced to do the bidding of the males lest they get hurt by their superiors, psychologically, physically, and emotionally. And it's all by design too, because many of the older Hollywood movie companies adamantly refuse to keep up with the times for the sake of profit and profit alone, and they themselves are secretly misogynistic and discriminatory as well. They don't care about creative integrity nor do they give a damn about the people they're pretending to represent. It all boils down to money. Because that's how society is now.
The writers have worked on better shows with better representation about women it isn't just these shows. And it's also because the executives prevent it from happening because it doesn't fit their agenda. The writers shouldn't be the only ones to blame for this that's also the reason why the strikes happened last year.
What really upset me with rainbow dash is that when they first start pranking ponies together Pinkie established that you never prank or scare fluttershy because of how sensitive she is. This was really early on in the show as well! When 28 pranks later happened the first thing Dash does is scare her and she almost caused her to have an anxiety/panic attack and she told her it wasn't funny. That really upset me because Dash is supposed to be loyalty and her doing that to Fluttershy just rubbed me the wrong way when I saw it. Especially since it's been established early on to not prank or scare her. Had this happened earlier in the season I wouldn't be upset and it would be a good learning moment for Dash but it was so later on that I just didn't like it. I never like Dash she is my least favorite due to some parts of her personality.
I think the episode was good and I didn't hate the idea of the episode itself but I sort of thought it felt a bit weird for Rainbow Dash to be the one to be doing things like that granted Rainbow Dash might be brutally honest, abrasive and blunt however I still think that she went way too far in the episode 28 pranks later.
@garynaccarato4606 I completely agree the episode itself was good. It was just really weird and I should've said that as well. Again if this was an earlier episode I wouldn't be weirded out but because it was established before that pranking/scaring fluttershy is a no go made it weird for dash to scare her knowing how sensitive she is. They also grew up together as well which I also forgot to mention as well.
As a brother of an older tomboyish sister I can easily say tomboys aren’t necessarily mean they’re just rough and sometimes others can’t handle that so they create this negative outlook on tomboys because they had a bad experience with one however most of the time tomboy’s will figure you out and say “oh he’s or she doesn’t play that way” and will start treating you the way you want to be treated my sister grew to learn that I’m not rough and tumble like she is so she eventually started treating me less rough
i havent watched the video yet, but i actually never realized tomboy characters were always a dick until this video was recommended, and thinking about it for a second, yea they do seem to always be one lol, and it bothers me as a tomboy myself i never have intentions to hurt anyone, even unintentionally, i try to be as nice as i can with everyone, mostly from my unhealthy desire for perfection, but i genuinely don’t want to be a dick or hurt anyone in any way lol it would definitely be nice to see a tomboy character who is actually friendly and sweet, since now these characters definitely don’t feel that representative to me i still like them, i’ve always loved tomboy characters since i was very young, but it would still be nice to see one that is less stereotypical
I agree we could use some more kind-hearted tomboy characters. Maybe one who happens to be the sweetest character in her story! Whatever it be a tv show 📺, movie 🎥, or book 📕
In MLPFIM I think that Gilda and Lightning Dust were kind of meant to serve as the more strongly toxic tomboy counterparts to Rainbow Dash however I think that Scootaloo was the least toxic tomboy in the series.Granted Gilda was eventually was reformed but I was not really talking about Gilda after she was reformed.
love the video (and the art) !! flanderization is such a struggle especially with tomboy characters. you're totally right about them always being portrayed as assholes like booo! give us fun and nice tomboys 😤
Hey!! Thanks for talking about this :D i noticed this about tomboy characters and didnt think much about it. I consider myself a bit of a tomboy but I'm not that mean (i hope)
Yeah, it was something that’s always rubbed me the wrong way and made me feel like I wasn’t really a tomboy because I like to be nice to people. But I’m glad this portrayal is becoming outdated :D
I love Rainbow Dash but I honestly don’t think she represents her element. She pulls pranks like almost all the time, she’s super cocky, and super competitive (not saying that being competitive is a bad thing but she’s way too competitive lol). It’s similar with what I think about Rarity, she can be an a hole sometimes and always uses her charm to seduce the boys (even Spike). Like i’m convinced that she knows Spike has a crush on her and she uses that to her advantage so she can get what she wants. She literally took his birthday gift that he was saving for himself in one episode, and never apologised for it or even gave it back to him i’m pretty sure.
Spike wanted to see her happy. She thanked him and that made him feel good. Also, Rainbow Dash represented her element time and time again. I just dont agree with you. You can have your opinions but this is what I personally saw.
@@LouieducktmMost of the time she represents her element, but half of the time it seem like she doesn’t. She pressured Fluttershy and Pinkie when they were working out for sports, she caused Fluttershy to have a panic attack in the episode where she pranked the whole town, in the Equestria girls film with the dazzlings she was acting like a jerk and wouldn’t play any of Fluttershy’s songs, she kept calling their band “her band” (you could argue that she was under the dazzling’s spell but she was acting like that before they came in). I’m sure there are other moments but i’m too lazy to comment it rn lol And Spike hesitated to give her the crystal.
I agree with you. They're my two least favorite ponies, but I can see their moments when they really shine. I feel for Fluttershy since I relate to her, I don't like how Rainbow always seemed to have a problem with how she is :((
i've heard a lot of people say that applejack and rainbow dash should have the opposite elements, and honestly i agree with them. applejack is loyal to her friends, her family and the apple farm, and rainbow dash is pretty brutally honest (except in secrets and pies, but that episode sucked so i'm gonna pretend it doesn't exist) and i could see a lot of the applejack centric episodes about honesty just being replaced with rainbow dash (especially something like honest apple, i feel like that kind of brutal honesty and hatred of fashion was more in character for rainbow dash than applejack)
While I do think Rainbow Dash may not be the best at representing her element I also hardly ever seen too many examples of Rarity being a generous or charitable individual however I also heard that Raritys element was going to be inspiration and that her element of generosity was an afterthought I don't see Rarity being an exceptionally greedy individual but I also wouldn't really describe her as exceptionally generous judging by what I've seen.I do agree that there are certainly times where Rainbow Dash can certainly be the opposite of loyal.
I really love tomboys ever since (it started with Rainbow Dash lol)…I love masculine girls..but for me back then, one of the traits that is mostly known for tomboys is being mean and an a**hole. Until now, I have a NEW tomboy crush. She has some typical masculine traits (violent, etc.) but those are her FLAWS, not some definition of her character. She uses her fists to protect her family and she’s selfless, tough, caring, she gives really good hugs and she basically gives both “the brawler” and “caring older sibling” vibe. But one day, that fist leads to tragedy and ends up regretting it, so she has to redeem herself and all her life, she’s focused on doing the right thing. Another best example of a tomboy character, (besides Luz, Wendy, Luna, Applejack, Tomo-Chan and etc.) P.S. BTW, she’s on my pfp 🤭
I have a main character who's a tomboy (her name is Skylar) and I'm scared that she might fall into these toxic stereotypes you mentioned in this video. personally, I feel that while a tomboy character can like the usual things associated with being masculine, at the very least they should embrace their femininity a lot more. their flaws should also not outweigh their redeeming qualities, since that will lead to making them unlikable. the reason why such stereotypes exist is mainly because of toxic masculinity and misogyny, with kindness and femininity being seen as a "weakness", when it is not. it doesn't hurt for a tomboy character to be girly and kind to others. if anything, make them wear dresses and do makeup while also regularly playing Call Of Duty, balance both their femininity and masculinity!
Honestly found it fun interacting. Granted have a protagonist who falls into some of the tropes. My protagonist is Flow. She girl raised by wolves who hate people. The only exception is Miss. Gray because she earns her trust. Flow is mostly a jerk not because hates femininity but, because more comes from her distress of other people and her assuming the worst out of others.
@@sherifflasso Disliking a characters characterization isn't bad writing. That's an opinion. Bad writing is plot holes. You can dislike something that is well written.
The whole “tomboy characters being assholes” to me is one of the many consequences of toxic masculinity and gender roles in our society. A lot of female characters tend to fall under three categories: objects only there to fawn over the male characters and be eye candy for the audience, tomboys whose only trait is being the obnoxious uncle you sit next to on the couch when you’re watching a football game but in female form, or both. In my opinion, the best tomboy characters are the ones that remember to be likable characters, even if they do sometimes showcase the toxic traits of masculinity. That, or just be good characters in their own right.
As someone who's a mass fan of tomboy characters, i can agree with you that some Tomboys being portrayed as unlikeable, arrogant and ignorant in media is annoying and bratty. That kind of attitude should NOT be a thing as it makes people think that good tomboys act like jerks whe in reality, they are good people. I know this since i'm friends with tomboys. Good video, mad respect to ya ass! LMAO 👍🤣
You would probably love Sailor Moon. Sailor Jupiter is a bit of a tomboy and she is kind hearted. She has gotten kicked out of schools for getting into fights but she always defended the weak.
I have some tomboy ocs that aren't really mean and rude towards others but instead, my tomboy ocs have different personalities for an example, my oc Midori is a tomboy but she has a more introverted and shy personality. A unique tomboy fictional character that doesn't fit the stereotypical tomboy personality type is Shiho Hinomori from Project Sekai (She is very introverted and is socially anxious but that doesn't mean that she's mean, she usually willing to help each). As a tomboy myself, I don't think that I'm an a**hole and I'm not willing to hurt others and I just hope that there are more unique tomboy fictional characters that have distinct and unique personalities and not just the same old stereotypical tomboy that is a jerk towards others.
When I was a kid I remember thinking Rainbow Dash was super mean to her friends, and everybody disagreed with me because they thought she was a really cool character, I've never seen the other two shows but I agree, I think because boys are stereotyped to be loud, gross, and obnoxious tomboys fall into the same crowd in cartoons
Would Alex from Totally Spies count as a tomboy who’s kind? I guess this is an older example, but she was always my favorite and I liked how the did her character in the show.
It’s been a while since i’ve watched totally spies, so i don’t remember if she’s a tomboy, but if she is, then yeah she’d count. I remember her being sweet 🥰
@@sherifflassoyeah, it’s been a minute (years) since I’ve watched Totally Spies but I’ve always saw Alex as tomboyish who also indulged in “girlish” hobbies. She was the more sporty one of the group, taking up skateboarding, while also loving shopping with the rest of her friends so she never felt too out of place in her group with Clover and Sam. I loved Alex.
I see myself as a tomboy, but I have never seen either of these characters as being similar to me. (i cant really talk about buttercup, i never watched powerpuff girls) Its probably just because i dont like sports, or very competitive things. And im also just way more shy and introverted. Its kinda interesting tho i never really thought about comparing them
Wow, you're really underrated, you should have more subs. Anyways, I think a good example of a nice tomboy is Marylou from "Catch! teeniepings" and I think the contrast with her best friend Romi's girliness is really awesome. The whole show is pretty girly, so the main mean people are these three mean girls who are mostly one-dimensional bullies.
Wow never expected you do that with crossover characters i think all buttercup, lynn jr, and rainbow dash being paired with gordon and james from thomas and friends
I totally agree with this! I've always been a Tomboy in real life, and it makes me really sad when we're portrayed like this. I've known people who always thought I was gross or weird because I was boyish. That included adults too. I know that in my own works, I've tried to portray different kinds of tomboy people, because just like anybody else, Tomboys can range in personality like anybody else. I've mainly made Tomboys with more hobbies other then Video games and sports (mainly stuff like art, reading, non feminine presenting fashion like sports clothing, and other things like that). I think the best example of a tomboy character I've seen is Chie, from Persona 4. She's super irritable, has a temper, and acts like one of the boys in the game. But, if you pay attention to her, and do her social link. You learn about how the way she acts, determines how people judge her. Which makes her pretty shy and insecure. Which is really relatable to me. A lot of the time, she doesn't feel pretty, and thinks that men find her weird or gross because of her personality. And, again, because of how I grew up, I felt very seen by her and her character. And I think she's one of the best written Persona female characters. (That's a complement, since one of the main Persona Writers literally admitted that he doesn't know how to write women.💀) As for Rainbow Dash, I'm someone who's watched every single episode of the show. And they usually do great with balancing her personality. But sometimes, mainly in later seasons because of new writers, and of course flanderazation. Then sometimes she can be needlessly mean or egotistical when she wouldn't be. But that's to come with a long running show, getting new writers and stuff. But what I'd recommend for people is, Tomboys are people! They have feelings just like anybody else. I think some people forget that when they try to write a certain character who doesn't have their problems to relate to. This happens with gay and trans characters, autistic characters, or POC characters and problems from what I've noticed. This doesn't mean people CAN'T write these kinds of characters if they aren't any of these people themselves, that would be stupid. But I still think it's good for writers to do research on topics, people, and places when they write stuff. It can be fun, you learn something new, and you feel closer to the character you're writing. But most importantly, it makes you and others sympathize with your characters, because they feel more real. Also, some people seem to forget this when writing Tomboys or Men. That characters need positive, AND negative traits equally to be great characters. This is EXTREAMLY hard to get right, but it's worth giving it a try. Of course no character is going to be perfect, and have their own struggles. Writing out scenarios or tropes you aren't used to, helps you improve as a writer. I've done this myself, and in result, I've learned a lot of things, and I've made some of my favorite episodes ever just from trying. Of course, there's no need to take my advice or anything. But that's just my opinion on this video. ^^ Btw you did an awesome job with this video, it was really nice to listen to, and you made some awesome points. Definitely earned my subscription! ^w^
Another example is Meggy Splezter from smg4. in earlier videos, she was pretty chill and fun-loving, but in recent videos, she's very aggressive, egotistical, and short-tempered, especially when it comes to Mario.
My ocs Mira is a tomboy whose cocky and brash when it comes to her to become a track star, but also a caring and kind person especially towards her girly sister, Ruby as the two are the best of friends and love each other so much.
At first I read the title and wondered "but isn't that the definition of tomboy? Rude and competitive girls from cartoons?" because I was so used to that trope😅
As a gender-fluid/ gender non-conforming goblin, I would flip flop between being girly and not wanting to be dirty, and running around in the woods and playing with mud. But I never got mean, at least not on purpose.
During you video I just remembered two other Tomboy characters Lucy and Pepermint Patty from the Peanuts they both have some of the Tomboy traces you listed especially with Lucy tho what is different with her is that she isn’t as much of an a*hole Peppermint Patty is a bit the same as in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving she doesn’t let Charlie Brown finish telling her that he will be away as she keeps interrupting and inviting more people over if these characters were combined I think they could be like the ones in this video
I have a Miitopia OC who is a tomboy: armor, masculine build, short hair, a scar on the cheek, and the "stubborn" personnality assigned to her. However she acts like the cool big sis of the team, because as a warrior, it’s her duty to protect the others from a certain Dark Lord who steal people’s faces, so she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty if it means it’ll get the job done quicker. She can be stubborn and refuses help from the others, or herself be a little clumsy when helping others emotionnally, however, she doesn’t actively hate girly things, she likes them, she’s just afraid a dress on the top-heavy girl she is will make her look ridiculous
That’s part of why i have a problem with it, cause kids are impressionable. Not that kids can’t watch flawed characters, but it shouldn’t be portrayed as cool. But hey, at least you grew out of it, that’s good 🫶
When it comes to MLPFIM Rainbow Dash is my favorite characters in the series despite the fact that she could certainly come off as quite abrasive and blunt or even as at least a bit of an A hole at times.I personally think that the episode that made Rainbow Dash come off as an A hole the most was 21 pranks later especially during the time when she delibritly scared the s**t of Fluttershy because it was a prank.Fluttershy is actually one of my least favorite character but in 21 pranks later episode I think that what she did to Fluttershy sort of went way too far and definitely crossed the line to a huge extent and made me very have a love hate relationship with Rainbow Dash for a brief period.Granted I did sort of like the fact that Rainbow Dash definitely wasn't a perfect person who did not really seem like a goody two shoes and was not really too afraid to do some things which were morally questionable once and awhile yet at the same time still being an ally to the other main characters and still ultimately willing do what was right when the crap really hit the fan big time and when push came to shove.I still believe that you can very much be blunt, tell it like it is, be brutally honest and have a tendency to say the first thing that pops into your brain like Rainbow Dash yet still be very much in many respects a good person even if brutal honesty may not be the most admired or appreciated trait.
I love Rd and Linn form loud house and Luna I'd really co l'm not a super fan of Power Puff Girls but Butter cup is cool and it is a good show but I like mlp all generations rd in g3 to g3.5 was into fashion and In g4 she doesn't mind dresses scootaloo in g4 to g3 g3.5 is a tomboy mind you I like mlp every generation as ne could also relate this to barbie life in the dream house mt childhood barbie show the two tomboy Characters I know From that Stacie Barbies sister who is in barbie now etc and Summer who is in Barbie life in the Dream house but Barbie 2010 in General Summer is more in g3/g3.5 Scootaloo’s type who energetic and Sporty while Stacie is the Middle Sister both have their Flaws but wanted to Mention them as a Barbie fan

RD pranks other ponies and pushes people to do things without checking how they feel. A big offender is a late season episode where she pranked everyone even if someone cries.
@@sherifflasso Yeah you shouldn't be talking about my little pony if you haven't watched the whole show even if you have something that has watched it in its entirety before.
I don't like it when people like you make it seem like the writers are these crazy disgusting people all because they didn't write characters the way you wanted it to be or because they make the character weird for comedic purposes like lyan acting crazy. That was only for humor and doesn't actually represent her. These are people that have had been a hard time in Hollywood which is why the strikes happened last year and also because of the executives that can't be able to let the writers be a lot more creative with how they write because of those restrictions. Also the powerpuff girls 2016 reboot executives were the ones that took ms bellam out of the show in the reboot that wasn't the writers that did it. There are really talented people that have worked on the reboot such as nick jennings who has worked on the classic season 1 to 3 SpongeBob episodes and bob boyle who has previously created wow wow wubsty. I believe it's the executives fanit for making these changes to the reboot which makes people blame the writers and developers for the show when it's the executives for doing those changes. Also nick jennings talking about ms bellam not coming back was because he had to promote the show.
Just because someone put a lot of effort into their work and went through a lot of hardships making it doesn't mean it's exempt from being criticized though.
How dare you called Rainbow Dash an asshole? Buttercup's the one who's acting like one! I hated that character, as well as Akane Tendo who's been a total jerk to Ranma.
* IT WAS AN HONOR WORKING ON THE RAINBOW DASH SEGMENT WITH YOU‼️‼️

The rainbow dash segment was pretty good ^^
I would love to see a tomboy girl that’s really nice and acts like an older sibling to others. Well there's Wendy from Gravity falls she's a tomboy and she's nice
@@KonradKp-h6p we love Wendy over here 🫶
I think that Wendy from Gravity Falls is a good representation of a well written tomboy character.

She's actually a total softie, and she's not that good at being a jerk.
you mean tigress from nerd and jock comics?
Like helda from hey Arnold
Like spinel from recess o.o

You might enjoy "Soulmate Adventure."
Yeah, I think more shows and movies are starting to veer away from this trope, and they’re all the better for it!
Im a tomboy too, pretty sad to see us being potrayed that way. Im also agreeing with vid.

media depictions of tomboys made me scared to express my masculinity as a kid. that and because i grew up in a traditional environment. i liked tomboy characters because i was a naturally masculine person (transmasc, to be exact) but i didn't think of myself as an aggressive jerk.
You might enjoy "Soulmate Adventure," it's a Chinese cartoon with the sweetest tomboy character I've ever seen.
Yeah, I liked that they were more masculine but didn’t like how they made being a jerk into a masc trait. It actually made me doubt my own masculinity in a way and made me doubt if I was “man enough” to be a guy if that makes sense. I actually found myself gravitating to male characters that weren’t trying to make themselves out to be manly, or struggled with the idea of manliness like Dipper or Peter Parker, because they were able to be kind to others while still being guys (and their personalities didn’t revolve around sports, which every tomboy character had but wasn’t something I was interested in lol)
(Also I keep seeing you everywhere lmao)
Anne from Amphibia is a good subversion of tomboys. She isn't very girly, but is still grossed out by bugs and reads girl magazines.
Edit: Yay you thought so too!
Anne is best girl 😌
So is Sasha. She’s girly but athletic and competitive
She did adopt a Caterpillar-Cat hybrid 🐛🐈
Haha, dw, i love OG Buttercup 💚

I agree, I like Ronnie Anne but they did her so dirty in those earlier episodes 😔
This isn't a cartoon, but Camille from Betty means the world to me.

As a brother of an older tomboyish sister I can easily say tomboys aren’t necessarily mean they’re just rough and sometimes others can’t handle that so they create this negative outlook on tomboys because they had a bad experience with one however most of the time tomboy’s will figure you out and say “oh he’s or she doesn’t play that way” and will start treating you the way you want to be treated my sister grew to learn that I’m not rough and tumble like she is so she eventually started treating me less rough
i havent watched the video yet, but i actually never realized tomboy characters were always a dick until this video was recommended, and thinking about it for a second, yea they do seem to always be one lol, and it bothers me as a tomboy myself
i never have intentions to hurt anyone, even unintentionally, i try to be as nice as i can with everyone, mostly from my unhealthy desire for perfection, but i genuinely don’t want to be a dick or hurt anyone in any way lol it would definitely be nice to see a tomboy character who is actually friendly and sweet, since now these characters definitely don’t feel that representative to me
i still like them, i’ve always loved tomboy characters since i was very young, but it would still be nice to see one that is less stereotypical

There's a Chinese show called "Soulmate Adventure" that has the sweetest tomboy character I've ever seen in media.
My favorite the loud house tomboy is Luna
Luna is best girl 😌
She pressured Fluttershy and Pinkie when they were working out for sports,
she caused Fluttershy to have a panic attack in the episode where she pranked the whole town,
in the Equestria girls film with the dazzlings she was acting like a jerk and wouldn’t play any of Fluttershy’s songs, she kept calling their band “her band” (you could argue that she was under the dazzling’s spell but she was acting like that before they came in).
I’m sure there are other moments but i’m too lazy to comment it rn lol
And Spike hesitated to give her the crystal.
@@Louieducktmsorry for the long comment lol
Another best example of a tomboy character, (besides Luz, Wendy, Luna, Applejack, Tomo-Chan and etc.)
This video is interesting but a character being a jerk doesn't make the writing bad. Sometimes jerk characters can be fun to watch.
That’s true, I just think these examples (sans Rainbow) ARE bad writing because they’re not fun to watch.
You might enjoy "Soulmate Adventure," it's a Chinese cartoon with the sweetest tomboy character I've ever seen.

I like that g4 Rainbow Dash has a little bit of her g3/g3.5 version in her because as a kid who grew up with g3/g3.5 I loved that about g4 still do
When I was a kid I remember thinking Rainbow Dash was super mean to her friends, and everybody disagreed with me because they thought she was a really cool character, I've never seen the other two shows but I agree, I think because boys are stereotyped to be loud, gross, and obnoxious tomboys fall into the same crowd in cartoons
Ugh THANK YOU cuz somehow I'm not considered a tomboy bc I'm nice sometimes or don't like certain sports....

Kim Pine, Wendy Corduroy, Abigail Remeltindtdrinc and Kirikou from A Boy And The Heron: are we a joke to you?
Btw you did an awesome job with this video, it was really nice to listen to, and you made some awesome points.

I used to base my personality on these characters when I was younger and I kinda hate the old me for that lol.
That’s part of why i have a problem with it, cause kids are impressionable. Not that kids can’t watch flawed characters, but it shouldn’t be portrayed as cool. But hey, at least you grew out of it, that’s good 🫶
Don't feel bad. Mainstream writers aren't very diverse.

4:53 I disagree that Flanderization sucks. It depends on the show and the character. Homer Simpson getting dumber and dumber made him funnier.

@@kerisaltchannel3817 I love Lana 🫶
You have an interesting take.
this!! i def agree
Cause little kids are mean
Not every little kid is.
How is Rainbow Dash an asshole?
I was going off the video I found on TT, which is why I asked my mutual to do the Rainbow analysis.
I love Rd and Linn I'm not a super fan of Power Puff Girls but Butter cup is cool but I like mlp all generations rd in g3 to g3.5 was into fashion and In g4 she doesn't mind dresses scootaloo in g4 to g3 g3.5 is a tomboy and I like Barbie so I could name to Examples From my Childhood Barbie Show One Stacie Barbies Middle Sister who is in Barbie now but barbie has been popular for years know and the other is Summer Barbies Friend both Examples From life in the Dream House I Enjoy barbie
@@helpfulplaylists3933 oh well, what’s done is done. I’ll probs do it again sometime 😜
Also "animalistic" may also be speciesist and/or insulting when pathologising beings for their traumas?
It was for humor purposes only.
🤓
Yeah, most youtube commenters don't understand nuance tho...
@@MsMvsc Yeah.
Just because someone put a lot of effort into their work and went through a lot of hardships making it doesn't mean it's exempt from being criticized though.
@@Flower_Mom That's fine but you don't have to be ignorant when it comes to discussing media.
I was a tomboy and an asshole maybe there’s a connection
I think it’s the idea that masculinity ≠ asshole-ish traits.
How dare you called Rainbow Dash an asshole? Buttercup's the one who's acting like one! I hated that character, as well as Akane Tendo who's been a total jerk to Ranma.
Because they are girlboss
Aren’t you that person who detransitioned because of shrooms? (No offense, I just can’t remember)
I have no idea what you’re talking about, but no 🙃
