Hi Steve! your instructions are excellent. I got an old A5 Mulberry agenda from Ebay. It was really cheap because it had rings that were bent and did not line up anymore. After a sequence of disassembly, bending back and reassembly, the mechanism works fine again. It was a 100% repair at 0 cost. Would have been impossible without your instructions. Really great. Thank you so much.
Thank you, I'm so pleased that you managed to get it sorted. There is also a more recent video based on more experience of taking these apart over the years. That one is here: ua-cam.com/video/MMInInFtrLA/v-deo.html Take care
Omg!!! Thank you soooo much!!! I thought I broke my new 25mm rings I bought but...nope!! I was able to add them to my A6 rings VDS!! Following you step by step!! Nothing like hearing that last click and having it all together!! Thanks again!!
Brilliant! I took the rings out of my VDS standard thinking I'd convert it to strings, but didn't like the feel so I just reassembled and popped them back in. Would NEVER have been able to do that without this video. Thanks Steve!!
This is so helpful. Ive been looking for ways to take out the binder rings without resorting to drilling or destroying the ring mechanism. Thank you so much for sharing!! 😄
Have you ever seen 3‐ring binders that have this type of removable hardware (without the rivets)? I have only known 3-ring binders to have the hardware that does have rivets. Just bought a binder where 1 ring has gap. Typical repairs not working. Excellent video--why can't all YT videos be so direct and time-efficient!? thank you!
Hi, what is the make of organiser you have with the faulty three ring mechanism? M2 Filofax organisers had 3 ring mechanisms, but very small in ring size. Those aren't riveted in, but held in by small clips at each end. A little bit delicate! M2 is similar in page size to Filofax Mini, but landscape not portrait in format. So the rings are on the short side of the page.
Hi Steve!! I can't thank you enough for producing this video!! I just successfully changed the rings in my Van der Spek Senior TM that came in with a gap that I couldn't fix with the typical troubleshooting methods. Petra was so kind and gracious enough to send me a replacement set of rings and I am over joyed with my organizer now!! Thank you!!!
This is a very useful video. But it doesn't address the issue of trying to change out the ring mechanism in Slimline or Compact Filofaxes. Is this a possibility?
The slimline models use a different type of mechanism, again the cover comes off in the same way. But instead of being on slots, they are often only held by tabs at each end that just bend up and then you can remove the mechanism. The compacts I think nearly all are held with rivets and as I state in the video these aren't practical to remove/replace.
Steve Morton THanks for replying to my comment. I like the slightly larger ring size of 13mm and find that 11mm on slimline are a little too snug. But I often like the cover styles of some of Slimlines and wonder if it would be possible to change out the 11mm ring mechanism for a 13mm size. Could you possibly do a video for this if you know how to do it?
May I also add, from personal experience that the entire mechanism needs to be moved when changing out rings, including the metal base on which the rings slide on to. Otherwise, you end up with rings that don't have their "spring" because the base plate and the rings were machined together.
Thank you so much for this video! I have wanted for years to salvage a brilliant Mulberry 6-ring A5 planner. I wanted to convert it to the more ubiquitous 4-ring A5 as the loose leaf paper is easier to find and less expensive. Now I know HOW to do it,.Alas, the diameter of the rings in my 4-ring binder are just a bit larger than those in the Mulberry, so I guess it won't work after all... 😐
Thanks great video. I have a question, i have a Filofax Kensington and want to remove the rings. Do you know if it is the same system as on your video? It looks like it, but i am not sure. I want to turn it in a travelers notebook.
I don't have a Kensington, but I would think that the method of removal etc is the same as the ones shown in the video, it is a design that hasn't changed that much in the last 90-100 years!
How would someone replace broke rings with a rivet style mechanism? One of my rings has snapped and I understand how ro remove it but installing the new ring assembly is what has me confused.
Would it be possible to change out these type of rings to the kind with the rivet? To force a hole through...? The only change of rings for my pocket filofax i was able to find is the rivet kind. The standard filofax pocket comes in 19 mm, so small! For example at 4:22 in your video if you were to take out the silver part completely. Does it leave a big square hole in the leather, or is there leather sandwiched underneath where i can just force a hole through for the rivet in the other type of rings?
The issue with the ones held in with rivets is it is easy to remove them but in doing so you potentially destroy the rivet which is part of the backplate. There's no easy solution to fixing them then. You can only get 20 mm Pocket rings, but remember if you go up in size it pushes the pages closer to the edge of the organiser, this means you can't use side tabs or the pen loop. If you are struggling to hold enough pages in a pocket, may I suggest considering using a large size organiser, or may be split your pages between two pocket organisers. Keeping all the regularly used pages/sections in one and the lesser used ones in the other. I've done this with my A5 to make carrying it easier. I split the pages between a normal A5 and a compact/slim A5. I hope that helps.
Very helpful video. I now know you can replace rings! Where do you purchase KRAUS RINGS to replace it into a GILLIO Amica planner? I swear only by KRAUS mechanism.
+Caroline Arès Hi Caroline You need to contact Van der Spek, if your Amica is a Medium size you will be able to get replacements from Van der Spek. vdsshop.com
+Caroline Arès Hmm difficult one, I'm not sure if the fixings are the same between medium and slim. To find out you would need to take out the existing rings and measure the distance and the sizes etc of the mounting points and ask Petra to do the same on a set of slim rings to see if they are the same or not. Next time I'm with Petra I intend to spend some time doing a lot of these sort of measurements to see what fits what.
I would very much appreciate if you do ask Petra and follow me with infos please. Keep me updated, please as I would really like if that is a possible solution to reduce thickness and still use the same planner which I am more than happy with.
I have a Chronoplan A5 binder with a krause mechanism (not the riveted style). I think I could follow the instructions well enough to put in a new ring set, but can you point me at a source? The Krause rings are not broken in any way, they're just not compatible with anything. I was thinking that if i could replace the rings with a more standard size, I could make better use of it. Any advice?
Hello dear Steve, I've tried to remove the rings from my Filofax compact Pennybridge with zip. BUT I fear that they can't be removed because of a pair of rivets that make the ring mechanism hold to the spine of the binder... I need to remove them because the zip is broken and I know someone who can change the zip. As I bought this beautiful Filofax more than one year ago, I think I'm out of the guaranty period. Any advice for me ? Any tip to repair my Pennybridge? Thank you in advance ! Marie-Hélène from France.
+Marie-Hélène Lachaud Hi, No the Pennybridge is a lot harder if not impossible to repair. The zips on those seem to fail a lot as well. You could try contacting Filofax because it should have lasted longer than a year.
My Strange Kingdom Yes it is possible. I have fitted 30 mm Krause rings to both my Gillio Amica and my Gillio Mia Cara both medium size. I've also fitted them to a Compagna for a friend. And you can reverse the process as well if you want.
I would like to know if its possible to add the ring mechanism to a planner that has none? I have a coach planner that i want to add the ring feature, but dont know how or where to order the ring from. Can anyone please help?
Hi if your familiar with the lv pm agenda how can I change them with a bigger ring size, thanks. By the way I have the epi mm planner from lv. Where I could buy the bigger ring.
Hi Jennifer. The Classic Croc uses the Krause PXR type rings. Most of the usual suppliers of Krause rings use the PER type. So yes they can be replaced with Krause rings the problem will be finding a supplier of them. Steve
How would you fix the issue of the ring mechanism not staying in place for example an LV agenda mm? The mechanism moves up and down... idk if it makes sense.
Hi, If the ring mech is moving up and down on the mounting points then yes it potentially can fall off. What you need to do is remove the ring mech and pull down the locking tab on the underneath side of the ring mech and then reinstall the rings until you hear the click as the tab locks in to place. If you are still getting problems with the rings moving up and down on the mounting points, then the way to stop this is to slightly widen the lugs on the mounting points by putting a screwdriver between the two lugs and twisting it gently to put pressure on the lugs so they bend outwards just ever so slightly. But not too far that you can't get the ring mech back on them.
D'Anna Houston yes and no... the problem will be obtaining a set of rings of that type. Also the organiser wasn’t designed for that size of rings so the pages or your tabs will stick out the edge.
Yes if you still have the tab. Take the cover off as I've shown, open the rings, and reinsert the tab. Close the rings and make sure it is working fine, then with the rings open put the cover back on again.
Alejandra Alvarado Not easily no. The problem is they are riveted in and you will find it difficult to reform the rivets to allow the ring mech to be removed. Most people drill them out. If you are having issues with rings of this type, gaps for instance contact me and I will share a fix with you.
FYI, I took rings out of my larger Malden (a5), and put in discbound planner with large arc/tul discs. It works really well because the Malden is so flexible.
And GIllio Rings are as bad as FIlofax. Cheaply made, but they are charging a lot of money. They don't last even a year. Of course they need to sell you rings to keep you coming back and replacing your organizer. At least I didn't pay $300 for Filofax, so I don't mind $60 Finsbury fall apart in 5-6 month
Thank you Steve! Petra sent me your video to change into 30 mm rings and it worked! Woo hoo!
Well done.

I've watched multiple videos on how to change out rings and this has been the most useful. Petroleum jelly is a lifesaver! Thank you.
Yes they can be quite tough to reassemble, I sometimes resort to a small hammer tapping them in to the channel vertically!
Brilliant! I took the rings out of my VDS standard thinking I'd convert it to strings, but didn't like the feel so I just reassembled and popped them back in. Would NEVER have been able to do that without this video. Thanks Steve!!

Greetings from France. Thanks to you, Filofax Jedi! You saved my beloved organizer!
This is such a helpful video! I used it a few months ago to remove the rings from a VDS and just now to put them back. Thank you, Steve!
Thanks Steve! Easy! Even with shaking hands on my first Van Der Spek! Watched several times before I even ordered the rings with my Touch Me.
I'm pleased it has proved useful for you.
hey, where can i find the rings?
Impressive demonstration. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video! I was able to switch out my rings today! This video was perfect!
Well done, Steve! Thanks so much for posting this.
Excellent Steve! Very informative and easy to follow. Thanks!
Thank You so much for this video! I was able to successfully remove the six ring mechanism from my Louis Vuitton MM agenda. Cheers :)
Excellent, I'm pleased it worked!
Very helpful! Thank you Steve 🥰
this is the best video. thank you so much! you saved my A6 :')
Thank you so much!! I was looking for something like this since a long time.. And I finally found it... It helped me so much!! You are great!!
Thank you for this video. :) This will rescue my large agenda! Saving to favorites!
I appreciate your wonderful tutorial! Thank you!

By carefully drilling out the rivet heads, but when you do that you can't put in new rings.
