Mary Ester Wells was a poor girl who came from a section of Detroit's " Black Bottom" is what they called it. She ran up to Berry Gordy after a Sock Hop. Typical teenager of the time pony tale and bobbi socks with wide bottom scurt. She performed " Bye Bye Baby." She had written it and asked him to present it to Jackie Wilson. Majestic magnificent Mary Wells performance show the soulful Diva one of the greatest ever, gone too soon Mary deserved better that she got back and clearly "Never, Never Leave Me" should have been a blockbuster #1 Hit
Since Mary was no longer with Motown (This song was on 20th Century fox records) She had no one at the company to promote her. Plus there was so much bad-blood between her and Berry Gordy, he probably did what he could to stifle her success with any other label. He was a real piece of Sh###.
Mary's first three singles for 20th Century had a eerily similar fate: starting out very strong jumping up the charts, but all mysteriously fizzling out around #55 or so. Many people say Gordy was responsible for that.

She looks Fabulous.. She just left Motown.. It's a shame she clashed with Berry Gordy and took bad advice and broke the Motown contract. Few people are aware of her physical handicaps she overcame and still sang beautifully.. When she was two years old she had meningitis, which left her deaf in one ear and partially blind.. I hope there is a special place in heaven for her, she had many obstacles… Smokey Robinson was writing songs especially suited for her that Berry Gordy took and gave to Diana Ross ( who he was sleeping with)..

mikeatturnpike Oh yes, Mary was aware of the fact the Supremes were being allocated better songs and less focus was being placed on Mary Wells… After all Berry Gordy was the father of Diana Ross's first child..Too late to have that one aborted..
Richard Beman Richard, what has Berry's child with Diana got to do with Mary Wells? She had left Motown before the Sups had their first major hit...and they worked with HDH not Smokey. And the child came many years after Mary left. Don't know how old you are, but those are the facts from the 60s.
