In the early 1990s, a group of mathematicians, misfits, hackers, and hobbyists calling themselves "the cypherpunks" came together around a shared belief that the internet would either demolish society's artificial walls or lay the groundwork for an Orwellian state. They saw cryptography as a weapon against central planning and surveillance in this new virtual world.
The philosophical and technical ideas explored on the cypherpunks' widely read email list, which launched in 1992, influenced the creation of bitcoin, WikiLeaks, Tor, BitTorrent, and the Silk Road. The cypherpunks anticipated the promise and the peril that lay ahead when the internet went mainstream, including new threats to privacy and the possibility of building virtual platforms for communication and trade that would be impervious to government regulators.

The internet is the only free market we closest to. Big Tech is already dying as Web 3 and crypto are evolving.
@Charles Vane The government is already taxing crypto-trading profits, have proven they can lock out and seize specific accounts and amounts...and of course, are already taxing pretty much every goods and service there is, plus payroll taxes.
The idea that crypto is a 'store of wealth' is ludicrous as it's literally backed by nothing but hype. Hodl long enough and you'll find yourself broke when enough big fishes finally pull out their profits from the pyramid scheme and leave millions of lower level 'investors' holding the bag.
I mean internet definitly make us more free then we would be without it. Thinking about tyranny in binare sense might be missleading. We Canon base on corporations and goverment survivalence all Day but fact is that we are not bound to learn about world just from school or state run media anymore and I think that is great succes.

Few can even wear as mask over their nose and mouth, so to expect they could ever hope to do crypto securely was never considered. The ways for crypto to go wrong are high, from key exchanges, to hacking servers, to guessing password (or writing them down), to viewing the secure message (at which time it must be decrypted) in a way that causes that plaintext to be available to others.

Thank God for the cypherpunks that we have Bitcoin. I have hope for humanity's freedom because of Bitcoin.
unless you can effectively decentralize the whole computer industry so that governments and other big actors can't effectively attack or restrict free communications, cryptography won't cut it.
The industry that designs and, especially, manufactures computers is very sensible to goverment intervention.
The networks we use either they are already integrated in that control grid, or they can be easily intervened. They rely in physical infrastructure that can be easily located or rely on access to the powergrid, which can easily be restricted. Even a hypothetical dectralized network of radio links could easily be taken down if necessary.
So, you want to use encryption over THEIR network? Then they'll block encrypted traffic. DONE!
Maybe I'm an ignorant fool, but, I just don't see how they expect to overcome these very real threats WHEN the powers that be decide to implement them.
