This video and design fundamentals have been the two most important videos for me on Mirai live. Cool to see you posting this here, it'll be great for the world bonsai community. If you're a beginner this video will increase your ability to appreciate/judge bonsai ten fold.
I watched several videos prior to finding this one, and boy do I wish I found this one sooner! Thank you for providing such an in-depth and contextualized lesson on this topic!
This is probably one of the best instructional videos I've seen. Very easy understand and follow. I hope you continue to produce more of these fundamental videos. Well done!
Thank you very much Ryan for sharing this very interesting video! This is a great lesson of physiology and aesthetic of bonsai, very compliments for your incredible preparation and professionalism!👍👍👍👍
Finally someone is warning/advising of these pitfalls! My 86 yr old Mom royally messed up her Health Care by falling for a MAP and it was a disaster! Thank you for this!!!
How do we shape the curves on a bonsai tree, like the pine and juniper shown in the video? Should we trim the apex first and then let the branches grow before adding movement, or do we create the initial movement with wire and then continue shaping as the plant grows? Or is it a process where we establish all the movement when the tree is young and just continue pruning periodically? I’d love some clarity on this!
What would you do with a bonsai tree that doesn’t like repotting. I have a Madrone bonsai tree. That I been growing in the same bonsai pot for 18 years. It growing great in the pot. But some of my club members said never repot it or it will die
i am insanely impressed that you have had that gorgeous bonsai since you were 12... is this your work? it seemed likely that it was a purchase or gift since its incredibly developed for a young person
Excellent introduction. Thanks so much. A question. Does everyone always agree on which branch is the sashieda (sp?)? Or are there sometimes discussions, such as: -- I think this branch is the sashieda. -- No way! That branch is the sashieda for sure! -- You're kidding! Etc. Thanks.
The trees are beautiful, and the amount of content is amazing. But a constant criticism i have with Mirai is the lack of accessibility of the information. Gives an impression of elitism and a bit of gatekeeping. Often I just end up switching to Peter Chan… It seems you have a lot of things to teach that I would like to learn, but please work on your communication and pedagogy. No hate here, just constructive criticism.
You’re watching a video called basic anatomy, and you’re complaining he’s gate keeping? Wtf are you talking about. Maybe you should look for his detailed wiring vids, or a video where he works a tree from start to finish!
I have never once searched bonsai videos ever. Ive never clicked on one befor now. Ive never commented or watched, or anything resembling an interaction with a bonsai video or channel. And yet, every time i get on youtube, every 6th-10th video suggested is a bonsai video. Can anyone tell me why that is, and how to make it stop? I couldnt care any less about bonsai, and its spamming my feed. Its very annoying.
I feel like if you aren't going to go into the 'exceptions' that are deciduous but not broadleaf (ie, angiosperm) species, you should have at least used a broadleaf as the demonstration tree instead of a ginkgo, which is a gymnosperm.
The trees in this video are bonsai. Penjing is the Chinese form from which bonsai descended. Penjing are often done more in the form of landscapes including several trees, rocks, and figurines. These are often planted on a white marble tray. Single tree penjing are sometimes done in animalistic forms. Bonsai is the Japanese art . Mostly it is done with single trees which are shaped to resemble the shapes that the species involved would have in Nature. There are never figurines in a bonsai. Rocks are only used when the tree is actually growing on or over the rock. There are forests in bonsai but they are done without rocks or figurines as well. A related Japanese art called saikei includes several trees with rocks presented with a naturalistic appearance in a shallow ceramic pot.
Lmao jesus christ. I don't think I've ever been so triggered by a comment. Bro. Google. Type the words you don't understand into the search bar. It's been a thing for decades.
To not utilise sophistication into explaining something as complex in a living organism is to risk the disregard inherent in “oversimplification;” which becomes a disregard to providing public with tools for informed decision making.
This level of detail made me feel like I was right back in human anatomy class. Awesome knowledge and awesome job!

This is one of the only and by far the best description of a live vein in a tree. 👍👍👍
He had that juniper of that quality since he was 12 and still alive?! Wow just some real love and talent.

This is super helpful for a bonsai newbie!
Excellent vid, thank you very much!
super explanation of Bonsai terms

You can put it in a bigger pot. That should never be a problem if the pot is only a little bit bigger
i am insanely impressed that you have had that gorgeous bonsai since you were 12...
is this your work? it seemed likely that it was a purchase or gift since its incredibly developed for a young person
Well done ¡¡ i enjoyed it...
Sangat bermanfaat
Excellent video. Thx❤
thanks for sharing
Excellent!!!
Thank you, this is very helpful!
Instead of a circle can that also be a square?
That pot on the Pine is
High🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
Ichi No Shashi eda= defining sleeve branch. Imagine the kimono sleeve swaying in the wind while a Maiko is dancing
It's actually Sa+shi eda = 差+し 枝 "character" + making it a verb (characterizing)+ branch. As I understand it.
Excellent introduction. Thanks so much.
A question. Does everyone always agree on which branch is the sashieda (sp?)? Or are there sometimes discussions, such as:

cheers mate!
All combined becomes the deathly hallows?
I mostly see ginkgoes shaped like that. I miss Mondays at Mirai.

12 minutes I'll never get back. Couldn't manage anymore. Too much repetition.

So many big words
Ich finde dich super, aber kannst du das nicht mit Deutsch unterlegen. Wäre super 😳😁
Do you teach people? I'm willing to learn.

I am seriously addicted to Ryan's videos. There are SO many videos on Mirai Live that aren't on UA-cam. Check em out, he does live streams every week.
@@alexeuerle7986 Thanks for the information!

Excellent presentation. Next time get a better shirt! Those pocket flaps do not match the pattern. Again excellent
That tree looks like a sawn off stump!!! 🤣

8:30 You didn't say what you call the piece that originates from the roots there on the left. I call them suckers and snip them off.
Bonsai Squid Game confirmed

penjing ? is that correct? not bonsai

Bonsai literally means tree in container so any tree in a container is a bonsai
A bonsai does not need to follow the rules to be a bonsai tbh.
You are technical ne very broad! Use lamens terms
No just because you have a limited vocabulary doesn’t mean he should dumb it down
