    I'm currently experimenting with creating bonsai trees from native Michigan trees and shrubs. All are wild-grown, with minimal intervention from me. So far, I've got a series of Sugar Maples, (considered rather difficult by most sources I've found, due to the ultimate size of the untrained counterparts) Sumac, (recovered amazingly well from being topped, which gave me the idea to attempt a bonsai out of it, but the leaves might be too large, even after defolation and regrowth. I'll have to try and see.) Third, and the thickest trunked of the lot, is a weathered old grapevine that has been growing out behind my house for more than a decade. It will need cutting back to create the trunk, but I plan on keeping it larger than a typical bonsai because it already has an Almost perfect Informal Upright look. With time and proper apex development, it'll be utterly unique.

    Hi. So happy to see those fish, beginning and end of your video. I have to tell you what mother nature put on display in our backyard during dinner tonight. My daughter looked out, noticed a wild turkey coming up to drink out of the pond, just as the resident pair of ducks landed in the pond. A rare sighting of a black squirrel (never have seen one here in 30 years), and several hummingbirds. All at the same time. A short time later, a red fox trotted through the yard. The only thing missing (besides KOI) was Snow White. I missed the deer that visited during the night, but saw their damage left on my plants. At least no bear sighting lately. There was a bear last week a couple blocks away. Surprising with a 90 degree temp, to see all that activity at one time.

    Hi Jason, love all your videos, thank you! Hope this is an easy question to answer: I have 2 dwarf hinoki cypress, one in ground and one in mesh type tray you recommend , for the intended purpose of thickening the trunk. Do you recommend pruning it at all during this process to keep it on the smaller side? Thank you again!

    • @TheBonsaiGarden
      @TheBonsaiGarden  9 місяців тому +1

      That depends. The foliage acts like solar panels creating energy that thickens up the tree, however you also don’t want branches to thicken up too much, if you might be intending to remove or restyle later. You might be able to prune the top and select a lower branch to become the new leader, giving you taper. It’s something of a judgement call in each and every case.

    Is it my eyes or did I see at 4.03 the cost of a simple ceramic pot tray was £185 and £180 ?. Think I'll stick to my local Webbs Garden Centre

    • @TheBonsaiGarden
      @TheBonsaiGarden  3 місяці тому +1

      Those are bespoke designer pots, rather than the cheap low quality mass produced pots in garden centres. Nothing wrong with that / it’s a personal choice - but would you put a £1000 tree in a £5 pot?
