For those that do not know. This song was written as a companion to Arkham City the video game by Rocksteady Studios. The song itsself is written about/as a companion to the Killing Joke. A famous Batman graphic novel written by Alan Moore. The point of the book is that anyone can have one bad day that will make you lose control and go deranged. The video snippets we see are from The Man Who Laughs a film adaptation of the novel by Victor Hugo. The appearance of Gwynplain as portrayed by Conrad Veidt served as the visual inspiration for the Joker from artist Bill Finger and writer Bob Kane. So by putting the Man Who Laughs as the background video they have brought their song full circle from the inspired to the inspiree.
Even though every work is derivative, the creative process has the ability to build something even greater than each of its parts. I've heard the song before in the context of arkham city. Its strange how it feels both familiar and new. The original actor from this piece is truly haunting. Maybe Claudio was introduced to the connection or he explored it out on his own, but just seeing how the inspiration has carried through to our present time is impressive.

So technically there may actually be legal reasons they are allowed with Arkham Asylum as a creator.
I know Warner Brothers is very lenient if you are “in the club” which they get kickbacks but are allowed to add to the canon as there are alternative universes coexisting in story
But this song was on the soundtrack for Batman Arkham city and the soundtrack just disappeared. I’ve been trying to find this song for 10 years now

Deranged is how I found coheed 10+ years ago. That Batman album was such a banger. Been in love with Coheed ever since.

The man who laughs is a fantastic film and this is a brilliant move by the band.
This music video inspired me to go watch the film. For those who haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Such a tragic tale, and all the emotion is conveyed expertly, even without the modern convenience of sound.
Storytelling through silent film was a whole other beast, and the techniques have largely be forgotten with the advance of cinematic technology and the emphasis on spectacle for entertainment in film. Silent film actors required such discipline of movement and subtlety that they could convey entire stories through facial expressions and body language alone, sometimes even needing to emote through literal inches of wax and greasepaint.
If you fancy tracking down some others, try the German Expressionist films of Robert Weine ("The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari") and Fritz Lang ("Metropolis"), the Soviet Montage of Sergei Einstein ("Battleship Potemkin"), and, of course, the truly insane camera and stunt work of Buster Keaton ("The General").

@@itsyaboiherman If I had to take a guess, the original version of the song is written in the form of a letter portraying the Joker's thoughts from him towards Batman, as the song was originally part of the Arkham City Video Game back in 2012 or so, whereas now it's all about a deformed man falling for a blind woman who can't see his deformity, and a blind woman falling for him, she accepts his disfigurement, probably the only person to understand and accept, and then she gets killed in a cruel twist of fate, so it's a sad, sad story.. Both are disfigured, and the town goes insane, AKA deranged.

The video is clips from the silent film "The Man Who Laughs" based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same name, and Conrad Veidt's portrayal of the mutilated and disfigured Gwynplaine was the inspiration for the Joker in subsequent years. As for Dea, the blind girl (played by Mary Philbin), you're correct...she was the only person Gwynplaine could love that he knew wasn't horrified or otherwise moved by his appearance.
I've never seen this movie before, but my god is the acting timeless
All those haunting layers of "We're one in the saaaaammmmeee, Deraaaannnged, HAHA, HAHA"'s at the end are really buried in this mix :( that part always sent chills down my spine especially since it all builds up to that moment. Personally preferred the higher pitched "world will prove empty, I promise you will always remember me" and "streets of misfortune, I pick the innocent from my dirty teeth" as the main vocal. It IS interesting, however, using that lower range as the main vocal on that part in a cool way though. The more I listen, the more it grows on me. Plus, that's how Claudio sings it live.
Overall, great mix. Chris Pennie's drums sound crystal clear and huge. People don't give him enough credit for being their drummer for a hot minute.

I know this is just a collection of scenes from a movie, but the editing along with the music is subtly brilliant here, especially with the last chorus toward the end. I'm so glad this song has a new lease on life.

The higher vocal part in the chorus needed to be higher in the mix personally, but even then still a great remix.

I thought this was a remake at first lol when i first discovered this song for the Arkham game when they released it i thought it was awesome. I listened to it on repeat for over a year.
Then once day listening to it at work i was in deep thought about a break up and somehow subconsciously focused in on the " ha ha, ha ha ) " then it was like a train hit me so I restarted the song and then realized " I pick the innocent from my Dirty Teeth " 👀 this entire song is the Joker talking to Batman 🤯🤯

This is the better mix FOR SURE. 🖤 The Drums and Guitar sound WAY better and more full. I will say it's quieter than the original, tho, and The "HA HA's" at the end SOUND more "deranged" with the higher pitched laughs. Even when Claud says "DERAAAAAAANNGED," it sounds more haunting on the original.
