I live in Japan drive the Cx5 diesel, my friend is a manager at Mazda, head gaskets are not an issue, there was problems with the EGR and valve springs in early models , but recalls have addressed this problem.
The same engine 2.2 turbo diesel is in the Mazda Altenza Mazda 6 my brother in law drives this and has over 260000 km only problem was a blown radiator hose.
Like with any diesel engine, regular oil changes and using quality diesel fuel. Fuel quality isnt an issue in Japan, might be in Kenya

I live in Japan as well and I'm about to get a mazda this week, either a 2014 cx-5 with 95k km or am atenza with 100k km... all diesel. I've been trying to find info about how reliable it is. my plan is to drive it for 2 years. about 35k to 40k km and then upgrade to a newer model.

In 2023 I bought my daughter a 2015 CX-5 diesel. She lives in New Zealand. So far (hopefully), the only concern that has appeared is that the engine warning light appears even after the vehicle has been full serviced. The dealer cannot pinpoint the problem. However, the vehicle runs perfectly, is excellent on fuel, and has lots of “get up and go”. It’d be nice to be able to find out why this engine light comes on. Any ideas? Thanks.
