    It was Rodger the drummers girlfriend's idea to do a spoof of the British soap opera Coronation Street regarding women's Liberation movement

    The four Queen 'boys', well educated, each one - Freddie did his advanced education in the Arts and there he was fooling around with BALLET! Loved your convo.

    John Deacon (bass player) wrote this song, but it was Roger's (drummer) girlfriend's idea to dress them up in drag.

    The housewife boggled down with the school girl, in-law, & grumpy granny. Housewife daydreams about being in ballet where servitude is the norm (eating grapes). “I Want To Break Free” from life’s mundane repetitive chores! Who doesn’t??? Freddie looks great in stocking & heels 👠👠 with tight mini skirt! Roger is gorgeous as Rogerina! Deacy the grumpy granny. And Brian in curlers when he has the most beautiful curls of us all. 🤣 Great reaction Ladies!! 💜💚💙💜💚💙

    Firstly, MTV actually banned this video from being shown on their TV channel.
    Secondly, believe it or not but Freddie Mercury actually had surprisingly little to do with either the song or the idea for the video.
    The song was actually written by John Deacon (the quiet one, who plays the bass guitar).
    While the idea to dress up like women was actually Roger Taylor's suggestion (Taylor is the blonde haired drummer).

    "The documentary also follows the row over the band's controversial video for "I Want To Break Free". Mercury's open display of transvestism in the Coronation Street-inspired video led to MTV banning the band from its US network."

    • @bluebell3720

      in the uk we would just say they are in drag
      and they are all dressed up not just Freddie
      tranvestism is different
      by documentary do you mean the film?
      Ive only seen clips but what I've seen and read it gives a very different impression on how things were and especially of Freddie
      this was Johns song
      and drag was suggested by Roger
      because of the response to the video Freddie refused to tour America

      @@peggyh8937 Right, MTV only banned this video... Unfortunately, that still basically ended Queen's relationship w the U.S. because Freddie was so pissed about what MTV did, that the band never toured again in The States after that.

    I'd you liked the 'artsy' section in this fantastic video, it's worth checking out a couple of other artists from the late 70s and 80s who made very artistic and stylish videos.
    They are Kate Bush and Grace Jones.
    I don't claim to be particular fans of either, but both are quite unique musically as well as visually, and both certainly enjoyed high levels of success!
    Happy viewing.

    The ballet sequence was basically down to Freddie's life-long love of ballet. He happened to be friends with one of the leads at the Royal Ballet, who agreed to recruit some of the other dancers and choreograph the sequence. Ironically, Freddie, who was rightly famed for his moves on stage, proved to be absolutely terrible at following instructions from others, which is why he doesn't really participate in the actual ballet and is more moved around by the others.
    Hilarious that Freddie shaved off his famous moustache to play Nijinsky in the ballet sequence, but kept it for the drag sequences, which play into the long-time British tendency towards humorous cross-dressing but, as others have noted, got the video banned in the US.
    Also, Roger Taylor is disturbingly attractive as a schoolgirl.

    Hello Beautiful Darlings💛 Freddie wants to Break Free😅😅😅 i think nahh, the song was written by their Bass Player John Deacon (Granny in this MV) Dress up in Drags was Inspired from a British Soap Opera “Coronation Street” .The Drummer’s (Roger Taylor ,>convincing school girl😎) Girlfriend at that tume suggested this idea to get Dress up in Drag. Unfortunately Americans at that time didn’t get this whole joke they think men in drag is not Rockin’ enough so MTV Banned the Video. But Life still Goes On for Freddie and the Boys😅😎 Great Reaction Ladies 🤘🏻😊. Next React to “Fat Bottomed Girls”😎😎😎😎

    The British have long held the belief that men doing exaggerated impersonations of women - and vice versa - for comic effect is inherently funny, that you don't necessarily have to be gay/queer/trans/what-have-you to practice it, and that it's not really something worth getting uptight about - it's as old as Shakespeare, older even than that in fact. That's kind of the subtle genius of Freddie's personae over the years: so many so-called moral guardians complain about LGBTQ issues being "forced on" children or "smuggled in" to pop culture, but the fact is that like Liberace before him, Fred's queerness was so overt it was covert. ;)

    You have to also remember that the 1980´s wasnt yet a time when relations between men werent approved as much as they are today. Freddie kinda swung both ways in his relationships. So that breaking free part could be also interpreted as Freddies wish to come out.

    • @linusromey561
      @linusromey561 2 роки тому

      If that is YOUR interpretation, you should admit it.
      The song was written by John Deacon, not Freddie. The song is about the women's movement at the time and has absolutely NOTHING to do with Freddie.

    • @sliceofheaven3026
      @sliceofheaven3026 2 роки тому

      @@linusromey561 How can you be sure about that? It might not have been Freddie who wrote the song. But Freddie for sure swung both ways. The 1980´s in general were a era where one sexual preferences were heavily criticized and to be in anything other than the normal union between man and woman was looked down upon.
