  • Gold was discovered here in the hills bordering California and Nevada, and a massive rush soon followed. Construction of the Cook Bank Building began in 1907 along Main Street, and it was the crown jewel of the town. No expense was spared when building the bank, which was completed with TWO bank vaults, marble flooring imported from Italy, rich mahogany woodwork, imported stained glass windows, indoor plumbing, electric lights, and telephones. Quite the luxury in the early 1900's... especially in such a desolate area!
Unfortunately this marvelous piece of architecture would only be open for about 2 years. By 1910, the doors were closed and John Cook sold off all of the building’s fixtures. The effects of the Wall Street crash back east and the Great Depression were felt far and wide. As the rich gold ore in the hills became depleted, and gold prices started dropping, exploring further into the Earth became too expensive. Miners began to pick up camp and move on to one of the several other gold and silver booms nearby... taking many of the buildings and infrastructure with them.
As with many of these old mining towns, once the bank closes it's doors, it's a final sign the boom has gone bust. By 1920 the town only had a few remaining residents. Within another decade, the entire area was all but completely abandoned and left to decay out in the desert...

Thank you for the video. A photoessay on transience.
When asked by the Chinese Emperor on how to maintain equanimity in both good times and bad, the Sixth Patriarch (of Chan/Zen Buddhism) replied "This too shall pass".

Yes great quote thank you for sharing! Visiting these places really drives that transience home. Makes you realize just how fast things change around us. We are all so occupied with life and just trying to survive these days most don't or can't take pause to notice.
