Don Bluth wasn't afraid to bring up dark/adult topics and show scary scenes because he knew kids could handle it. He knew to make a kid's movie, you don't need to dumb down everything. That's probably why his movies are so beloved by my generation. It felt like we were actually learning about a world and the characters in it and the conflicts they have, both with external forces and each other. Instead of just "oooh colors, shapes, and music for an hour and a half". He also did the movie Anastasia and Thumbelina.
Fun fact, in the late '60s or early '70s there was an experiment like this on rats by NIHM. Supposedly one day the experimenters came in and all the rats were gone. They never found them.
Not to add fuel to the fire, but my first working job was mowing a 300 acre lot in east TX. After a few passes, the absolute carnage that modern farming equipment can do to the small critters, frogs, mice, ground birds, sliced in half, decapitated and maimed. Amd that was with he tractor moving between 5-10 MPH. Just saying, the main critters absolutely should be concerned about moving day.
Just a reminder that in the 1980s, horror could be classified as a child's film. Upon rewatching, I have come to see Sullivan as more of a reluctant accomplice. He's aware of Jenner's plans, but rather than taking part, he's the first to alert Justin and then the first to offer his sword.
As someone who also read the book as a kid, I still love the movie, but there’s a lot of changes they made, and things they didn’t have time to leave in! The book explores how once the rats gain intelligence, they also gain a morality, which was the cause of contention amongst the rats over stealing from Farmer Fitzgibbon. The magic amulet was entirely invented for the movie; it’s unexplained and it feels unnecessary, but I can enjoy the movie anyways. Its purpose in the movie was to benefit the wearer if they had a courageous heart, which Mrs. Brisby did no matter what version you prefer. I love her! And little me also loved the idea of her marrying Justin someday.
This film is one of my dearest childhood memoy, I have never seen braver character from aunty Shrew to Brisby herslef, I always found her more heroic than any action hero. ANd yeah the Rat have compassion, a democratic system, I love character like the great owl and Nicodemus having frightening apprearance but so helpful and wise. And even as a child all those thing were really meaningfull even without the maturity of an adult. I think it's an awesome watch for kids.
Ah, one of the Don Bluth classics. The book is Way better than the film. Yet, the film is just so classic, especially w/ all the warm colors and music.
If you want to watch the sequel you can, but as someone mentioned, it had no ties to Don Bluth who mentioned pretty recently, he'd love to make a legit sequel. Also, the actress who plays Mrs. Brisby isn't the same in the sequel sadly, as the original tragically died from suicide :(
Don't bother watching the sequel it's just a cash-grab for MGM. It doesn't involve Don Bluth at all. He did express he would love to do a proper sequel to the story though.
It's been said that the movie shows three forces. That of nature, science and the unknown and mysterious aka magic. While Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner have their place among the greatest movie heroines, I think Mrs. Brisby tops them all. Considering the dangers she faces intentionally? Beings that eat mice like her and she had no technology to fight them off. I think it can be assumed that Jonathan married the smartest female mouse he could find and taught her a lot.
Also she's just a mom trying to protect her sick child and save her family, not some superhero. She's not brave (she's scared of heights, the cat Dragon, and terrified when she tried to stop the tractor) but she has the courage of the heart to face those things for the sake of others. That's what makes Mrs Brisby a true hero.
Sadly part 2 was made by completely different people as a cash in... and is not Don Bluth. Avoid it like the plague unless you just want to see how bad a Secret of Nimh ripoff can be...

This is one of the most darkest animated movie I watch during my childhood. So many great memories.
The National Institute of Mental Health actually exists. The sword fight references the classic 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Rated G my foot! The movie is loaded with nightmare fuel! The owl scene is my favorite
"Oh, I couldn't do that. Owls _eat_ mice!"
"So do shrews, my dear, but this is a cartoon. It's dark but not _that_ dark!"
This is my favorite Don Bluth movie. It is an animated film that is very revolutionary amd wonderful.

And Jenner wasn't even the villain in the book.

The book this is based on is more grounded, they added the magic stuff to give the story something extra for the sake of the movie.
Some books just won't make a good movie as-is, and _Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH_ would be one of them.
I love this movie. I watched it when it came out I was 10 years old. Another movie I love is The Dark Crystal.
Off topic but Did you have any nostalgia from watching Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Smurfs and G.I. Joe cartoon

Oh yeah, the sequel is just awful.
This movie scared the bajeebus out of me as a kid, so much so that I actually hid the VHS so I wouldn't have to watch it.
