Hi Dave, you make me laugh when you say,I have a cunning plan🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
You are clever Dave. i really enjoyed watching you converting the old Escort Dave...
That's very kind of you
Right idea lowering the shell onto the crossmember Dave.
I believe the lads at David Sutton used that method with the RS1600 / RS1800’s
Thanks Mick, I'll have to make a better rig for it though.
Hi Dave, you should get those engine mounts patented, seriously!!🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧
The Heath Robinson car lift was genius in such a confined space👍
Glad that bit is done 👍
Me too, although it'll all be coming out again for paint..
@@DavesGarageuk yes a dry build is the way to go so you don't forget anything major which will need cut n weld again
Coming along nice Dave. A period style BDA cam cover would look smart on that engine
It would, but I don't think they're available for the ST170, only Zetec.. I could be wrong.
Rocker cover is magnesium alloy mate
First off nice work fella, secondly thank you lord for the rain as inside is king ! 😂 my rain dance will keep this project moving in 😆 👍🏻
Ha, I've just responded to a comment begging me to get back to the Manta 🤣
@@DavesGarageuk love them both but the as many have a passion for the escort and live the st/Mazda swaps
Maybe put a hole in the bottom of each mount to let any water to come out....... no rust.
What a NICE job, bud! Looks GREAT! I really wish you and I were in the same time zone! Would love to get together and turn some wrenches!
That would be cool!
tasty job dave
I did my city & guilds welding at night school while I was in the 6th form at school nearly 50 yrs ago and I am pretty sure you should have put a bigger bevel on the plate to get full penetration weld as that engine mount will be stressed, keep a eye on it for cracks in service, best regards
Pleasure to watch your videos
Great video, and problems solved very well 👍
Agh. Ok Dave. Thanks for that. Info I’ll stick with the. Gas. I’m just lazy to go to collect gas. Lol. Looking. Good. C
You are amazing at this stuff. Genius level of talent.
I said it many times to you but i will say it again. Thank you for putting your content out and showing how you do things its very much appreciated. All the best Dave 👍
Wow, thank you!
need to check the prop angle Dave, diff should be at 4 degrees as standard, you could also look at the adaptor plate for the gear stick to give you an idea of what you need most motor sport places sell them easy to fabricate tho to man of your skills👌👌
Yes, I'll set the diff to suit the gearbox.
Bet you are glad of your plasma cutter!
I love my plasma cutter 😊😊
Great to see the engine in. It makes a massive difference reaching that point doesn’t it.
It does 😊😊
Blooming brilliant work on those engine mounts sir👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job Dave, keep up the good work, nice to see the engine and gearbox in 😀👍
It's always a good step forward
Nice job of the engine mounts mate : 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Engine mounts look OEM!! Well done! Thank you.
Thank you 😊
Like a mad scientist. Great work really looking forward to seeing this done
🤣🤣
excellent fabrication skills.
looks great imagine after the engines painted and the hardware installed nice progress
Thanks 👍
Great job Dave slowly looking like a car again with the engine fitted 👌👍
Getting there slowly. I see yours is making progress too Sid
@@DavesGarageuk It's coming along nicely. Still a long way before it see tarmac again.
Hi 👋🏻 Dave the gas man in his man cave 😊 Some fantastic fabrication with a great result 👍🏻 Well done buddy 👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great work. Enjoyed the bonus footage at the end. Was that you on the paddle board 😂.
Ha, first to mention the bonus footage 😊😊. From our recent trip the Lake Garda. No, it wasn't me on the paddle board 🤣🤣
Sorry Dave watched a bit further and you have put a good bevel on the plate
Another great video Dave your fabrication skills are amazing the car is coming along nicely
Glad you like it 😊 thank you
Would it be wise to paint the engine bay before fitting the engine.
This is just a dry build, to see where everything needs to go, brackets, extra holes, further fabrication etc. It'll get taken apart again for paint.
Cam cover is magnesium
Thanks Geoff, that's very helpful. Ta 👍
Love the engine mounts, id have been stumped there not knowing what to do. Ad someone said, a stick welder would have been much easier to make them with as it has more filler rod to play with and thick steel is its forte.🤗👍🇮🇪
A few have said the same, but I really can't stick weld 🤣 I've tried a few times, but it just makes an almighty mess.. I can't get used to the disappearing stick.
It's looking good dave
Thankyou Jim
I like to use the arc/stick welder for that heavy gauge welding, fills those holes and chamfers lovely.
We put Capri front struts in my brother's MK1 many years ago, I think it was because we spent time measuring various things in the scrapyard and concluded they were the same but lowered the car either through being shorter or the spring seat being further down the leg, maybe a combination of the two, can't remember after all this time, they could have been MK1 Capri legs too if there's any difference.
Where did you go at the end?
Hi Superloopy, a fella local to me had a pai of mk2 front struts which is what I had on my first Mk1, so I know I can work with them.
Nice work Dave looks nice , Thinking out loud I had a similar idea to do this to an escort van an convert it to rear wheel drive I’m in to minds as it’s such a lot of work but I can’t help but tinker …I might just drop the st engine in as it is front wheel drive 🤔 decisions decisions !
Cracking job Dave I went the other route and bought the Retroford mounts, my vvt solenoid didn’t snap but I pulled the top half off I then pushed it back on don’t know if this is going to be a problem tried to get one but like you found out that they’re discontinued I have bought a second engine so I can use the one on there but it would be good to know if the Passat one works cheers Dave 👍👍👍
Nice work, did notice the cross member was a bit far rear compared to the usual position the zetecs go, similar to the x flows. Some 20-35mm more towards the firewall.
Usually need to cut the lip off from the firewall.
Hi MJ, apart from the cost, that's one reason I prefere to make my own mounts, I don't like the idea of cutting up the lip. Just means the engine fits a little forward, but I xan live with that.
@@DavesGarageuk I really like your approach on things, you build it as you see fit as it's your car. Most people follow the heard and stuff look the same. I prefer back as possible and as low I can shove the zetec for better weight distribution. But I do understand not wanting to cut that lip. I too wrestled with the idea back in the day.
Where there is a will there's a way!
Or a lunatic
Love it! Love it! Love it!!! Keep going, you'll get there Dave.
One thing, are you still using fluxcore wire and would you recommend it? Cheers Doug.
I am Doug, I've been very surprised at how well it works, even on 6mm steel, it really blasts in.
👍👍👍👍👍
You would think somebody would stock engine mounts to suit the ST engine to fit both mk1 & 2 models of escorts going on how common that engine is being installed into escorts
RetroFord make mounts, but they're pricey. And it's more "fun" to fabricate...
You can buy everything off the shelf for this conversion.
Ohhh yes a didn think of that mate : sorry 😊
Just a suggestion : wot about cuttin the head off tht aqward bolt & just puttin a nut on : then you wont need much room to screw it off
Good idea, but it has time be a bolt otherwise you can't get the mount in place
Can i have that vw's vvt numbers when it arrives? Creatings from finland. I been acticted your videous with my similar projects....
This is what I've ordered, we will see if it fits... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115820730758?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=ToA0FS2lTH2&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=v5ZLVAlZQYe&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
👏👏👏👍
yeh the breather needs cut off dave and re routed on the side of the cam cover just drill a hole and use an an8 fitting drivers side ,
Thanks Kev 😊👍
the front of the engine looks to high bonnet will hit
All checked and is OK
Good love what you are doing
The less camera movement the better - or it really causes a nasty nausea.
Sorry about that
Valve cover is magnesium and very crappy at that. Dont weld it.
Thank you, good to know.
